There is also this scene, just before Marianne sees the portrait of Heloïse with her son and the book, where she speaks with an art critic about her painting of Orpheus and Eurydice. The man said that Opheus seemed to wawe a farewell to Eurydice and she seemed to respond. It echoes the scene when the three women are reading the myth and one of them said that it was maybe Eurydice who asked Orpheus to look at her, to choose her memory upon her life. And it is exactly what happens when Héloïse asks Marianne to turn back one last time, to choose her memory. And sorry for my poor English, it's not my first language, neither my second in fact.

This movie is literally the most intense and amazing love story I know. The references to Eurydice and Orpheus make it even more tragic than it already is. I went to see it with my mom, and she complained about it being predictable and long, but it’s inevitably and the characters’ will to stop time is what moved me so much. It basically works like a Greek tragedy. I just love this movie and it deserves more praise.

When you said how the film is ultimately about the relationship between painter and muse, it reminded me of something. Actress Adèle Haenel (Héloïse ) also starred in Sciamma's debut movie and the two became a couple sometime after but separated before the filming of Portrait of a Lady on Fire. So the two of them would be able to understand firsthand the complicated relationship between muse and artist

I am so glad that you brought this up! I was surprised how many critics missed this angle in their analysis. It is obviously a romance/love story, but I would argue that its meditation on looking/the gaze/vision as a political endeavour is easily its smartest idea -- and also incredibly radical, at a moment where we tend to reduce and flatten the politics of the so-called female gaze to a common style or sensibility, rather than addressing its profound power dynamics. I think that Griselda Pollock, bell hooks, Rosemary Betterton, Linda Nochlin, and Laura Mulvey's writings on looks/vision all mesh really beautifully with this ethos. Particularly considering the histories of women artists, what they were and were not allowed to represent, and how the lines of subject/object were consolidated through image-making, before and during this era. During her promotion of the film, Sciamma's references to Varda also suggest that she has picked up Agnès' torch when it comes to revolutionising feminist ways of seeing in cinema.
@vixemariah
@vixemariah 2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree about this being the smartest angle of this movie, and I find it really strange that nobody talks about it. I believe that in part it's because of Sciamma's own public declarations about the movie, saying that that it is about "the power of love", or about "women's gaze"- of course it is AS WELL, but I think these assumptions are too broad, and end up on loosing the target. The movie is actually proposing a new (feminist) version of a very specific (and old, Platonic even) kind of love, which is that of Muse and Artist, but here the Muse is also active in the gaze dynamics - which is a very clever subversion that this channel analysed so well. In my humble opinion, THAT'S the real political power of the film - not the love between two women. In fact, it's not a movie about the concrete realisation of the love between women at all. In that sense, the movie is fresh, and at the same time very old-fashioned - and in that resides a lot of its charm. :) It relates back to romantic classics from Titanic (which is an assumed reference for Sciamma) to Casablanca, going back to XIX Century Romantism as well. But here the characters don't put themselves as victims of passion, or faith, or society (first version of the painting), but rather as active agents (second version of the painting), deliberately choosing to transform their love into an idea.

What Sartre gets wrong is that there's a huge difference between being objectified and being observed. A Gaze can only ever have any influence whatsoever (positive or negative) based on the conscious awareness of the person being gazed upon. As such, it is purely a figment of the imagination of the observed. Spefically, people who lack basic introspection (the ability to view ones self as an outside observer) tend to be very disturbed by this. But the gaze itself holds no power. It is the person's subconscious reaction to it which wields power. And as such, the answer to the Gaze lies within the observed, not the observer.

A beautiful commentary! Not only did it expand my lens of the film but also on many aspects of life such as viewing art and why I feel the way I do when being gazed upon. Your explanation wasn’t just bullshit claims which so many video essays entail, but was fueled by evidence which made it so compelling. I hope you keep making videos and look forward to them. :)

Fantastic analysis! I felt the importance of "the gaze" while watching the movie, but I really appreciate your explanation and incorporation of art theory into this topic.

Whoa, this was an excellent video. Was doing some research on the movie and this was just the best. The gaze is the most interesting subject in the world, that Las Meninas analysis had me mind blown! Had no idea. This movie was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, didn't expect to love it so much but it's just so moving. Definitely subscribed!

excellent video! portrait is my favorite movie of all time and your analysis does it justice. one thing i must critique is the background music during clips of portrait, i felt that music really does ruin the tension of such scene and can be distracting. but otherwise great work!!

Wow. This was such a beautiful deep dive into the idea of the gaze in the film. Thankyou; seeing this insight almost fills the pockets of lack of knowledge I have with regards to art history that honestly helps in appreciating the film so much more than just through my own perspective. :)

Thanks for this awesome analysis. The point you made at the end, about how the gaze isn't limited to the physical act of viewing something, but also includes looking at someone through memories was spot on. It absolutely devastated me when Marianne recalled that she saw Heloise again for the first time afterwards when she saw a painting of her. Something so incredibly bittersweet about considering looking at a painting of your past lover as "seeing them again"

I think hands and touch too are very important to the film. There is not one sex scene in this film; however, it doesn't need it. By allowing the use of the gaze and that of the touch relays perfectly the intensity of the love they share.

I just finished it tonight. It took me two nights, as I was afraid to finish it the first time. It took me a lot of pauses before finishing, I get overwhelmed at certain moments that I had to pause and cry. After finishing the movie, I know this is one of the films that is burned in my memory and will forever have a place in my life. Some are not fleeting. Thank you Celine Sciamma. Thank you, Adele Haenel and Noemie Merlant.
