One of the finest rock/jazz drummers of all time. RIP Pierre.

What's extraordinary is not just the facility, but the pure timing perfection. Not one false stroke. Remarkable.

I hope that Lena Andersson will not mind if I say that it was probably an honour to be so outshone by the rolling rhythms, power & delicacy of Pierre Moerlen. He was VERY special!

I visited this concert in Hamburg in 1985 - really a long time ago - but it was one of the best live concerts I have ever seen! Tribute and Pierre: what a great music - really unique!!

There are Gadds, Porcaros, deJonettes and what have you. Pierre M has been a favorite of mine for a good 30 yrs now. Not because the others don't shine - they all do. But music is not about that. Pierre, through his music takes me to these unique places that have become treasures in my world. Next life I wanna play with him!

Gong, "Isle of everywhere" intro, when the drums come in.. wtf! How can that be humanly possible? Pierre brought so much joy into my life . I am 67, an average drummer in a covers band. No complaints, just picking up again after the Covid thing. Pierre had this blistering snare/ hi-hat technique. Watching him, his left arm is tucked in, and he plays matched grip so fast. He kind of leads from the left. Sometimes he sounds like he's playing the riff backwards, and hey? Why not? Thank you Pierre for your exuberance and incredible musical talent. Nick

Excellent! Heard Pierre Moerlen with Tribute twice back in the eighties. PM was a educated genius! Tribute actually played at my school. Just four songs as iI can remember. The first two without PM on stage. Then the music (PM) entered the stage. Afterwards, one of my classmates, who played drums himself, stand outside crying... He had never herad anything like it. Don´t miss Pierre, along with his brother Benoit., playing Mike Oldfields Canon for two Vibraphones from the album "Incantations"

To those who say Pierre Moerlen held his sticks incorrectly. That's true. Vladimir Horowitz also held his hands incorrectly (fingers flat, not curved) when he played the piano. So who was really "correct"?
@spercoco8 жыл бұрын
+Nicolas Copernicus There is no "correct way" to hold drum sticks. You either prefer traditional grip or matched grip. To say one way is better than the other is pretty much bs. Since this guy also played tympani and other mallet instruments like vies and marimba it only makes sense that he would use matched grip since that is the grip you use on those instruments.
@newtoncopernicus70118 жыл бұрын
+Steve Percoco Not talking about trad vs. matched grip. Some people say he simply doesn't hold them the "proper" way whether trad or matched. My point is: who cares. Listen to his genius and how he sounds. This was in response to the following post: "MrBlueSky4742 years ago [who was quoting someone else about the sticks] weird body motions, stuff drummer, holds his sticks wrong, If you can play half as good as him or ME!! ha ha. Who do you think you are!! ?? My experience of people who blow their own trumpets is that they are usually crap. What a load of legalistic garbage your post is. Good as him or me, holds his sticks wrong!! HA HA HA HA Idiot!?"
@spercoco8 жыл бұрын
Nicolas Copernicus I didn't even understand that other persons' quote. Was pretty incoherent but yeah and I'm saying there is no "proper way" regardless of what all the shit-tard experts on youtube will tell ya. Just watch 10 top drummers be they jazz or rock or what ever and they all hold their sticks slightly different. So you are in correct in saying who cares how he holds his sticks. I teach drum lessons now for over 25 years and have played professionally for 35 years so MrBluesky4742 is the expert though.
@Roddy19658 жыл бұрын
The "correct" way is the way that makes good music. He does that. The technical way to hold, may be different.
@kashi201214 жыл бұрын
@elmerexpress what a beautiful comment - so many people feel the need to say that one person or the other is THE BEST, but you pont out that its how they make us feel that is so special. Have you hear Pierre on a CD called "Paragong Live"? That makes me feel NICE!

35 years of study! -You must be quite an accomplished drummer. Perhaps you could share some of your work and enlighten us with proper stick placement and form. I would love to see a video of you replicating, and maybe even elaborating on Monsieur Moerlen's solo with "proper" body motions. Please let me know when you post it. All the best!

@muggawub I agree with you, However, you cannot say Neil Peart isnt unique. He is undoubtedly one of the best drummers on the plannet at the moment. His main influence being Buddy Rich whos main influence was Gene Krupa, which are the forerunners of drumming without doubt. There have been a huge amount of amazing drummers with such a wide variety of style. Pierre is brilliant in his own way, Phill collins, Mike Portnoy, Bill Bruford, Billy Cobham, Omar Hakim are also amazing, the list goes on.
