Sonogong or "Sun Wukong" is one of the main characters of the 16th-century Chinese novel "Journey to the West". Sun Wukong is a monkey king which possesses several supernatural abilities. In said novel, Sun Wukong is a monkey born from a stone who acquires supernatural powers through Taoist practices. After rebelling against heaven, he is imprisoned under a mountain by the Buddha. After five hundred years, he accompanies the monk Tang Sanzang (唐三藏) riding on White Dragon Horse and two other disciples, Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing, on a journey to obtain Buddhist sutras from the West (India), where Buddha and his followers dwell. (This is mostly derived from the Wikipedia page of Son Wukong)

Yes to all this, but in Seventeen's case, I'm not sure if it is based on original one or if just based on Dragon Ball Z references since Dragon Ball Z itself is based on Sun Wukong and sometimes people only know Dragon Ball Z.

Seventeen is as creative as ever and they always pull it off!!! The sample Woozi used is wild and nasty is the right word to describe it. The vocal unit leader, Woozi produces most of Seventeen's music and he kills it everytime I tell ya. Love the reaction as always Pierre! ❤❤

Your eyes were sparkling. You were impressed. SVT is like that. 💓 At quick glance I didn't see anyone write about the production so it's my job. There were over 200 dancers and 4 choreographers. The location was in front of an abandoned hotel which was wired up for the lighting. The crew built a new front and added the fire columns. And when the filming happened it was early spring and cold. The behind the scenes is fun to watch. Also, the dance practice (held in a gym) is SO GOOD. Not all the 200 dancers but a fair amount and you can observe that the synchronicity is like no other. Thanks for this great reaction. 💎

if you search sonogong you will find goko from dragon ball that’s what they mean in the end of the song “ this is the cartoon’s credits song” And the meaning if you know goko is the one in the anime who keeps evolving and still strong in every generation the rap in 6:24 “ switching up the generation till now” “ we’re not stopping, we’re racing now” that’s mean Seventeen is still the best since 2015-2023 from g2 to g5 they still racing and compete with themselves. the member “ Woozi” who wrote this song is a huge fan of anime that’s why he come with this idea and every song he wrote have a beautiful meaning especially the last album “ Seventeenth heaven “ every single song has meaning for them snd for carat “fans name” Thank you for reacting seventeen🧡

The choreography of this song includes several characteristic movements of characters from the Japanese anime “Dragon Ball”. Woozi loves Japanese anime so much that he can talk about it for hours by himself in weverse live.

Son Ogong is the Korean transliteration of Sun Wukong, the main character of "Journey to the West", an ancient Chinese novel that is so popular it basically became a shared myth in East Asian countries. Consequently this novel is also the main inspiration for the Japanese manga and anime, "Dragon Ball Z" and its main character, Son Goku (the Japanese transliteration of Sun Wukong). This song makes a reference to both the original novel and the anime, as Woozi, the main writer, producer, and composer of Seventeen, loves anime. Here's some of the references: -Woozi sitting on a lotus-like formation at the very beginning of the song - referencing the lotus pedestals used for Buddhist statues, because by the end of the journey, Sun Wukong reached enlightment and became the Fighting Buddha. -The Darumdarimda part where the formation mimics multiplying clones - Sun Wukong is able to make clones of himself by pulling out his fur and blowing it to the wind. -The lyrics "jump on cloud" and "power pole" - referencing Sun Wukong's ability to travel by riding a cloud and his favored weapon, the Ruyi Jingu Bang, a staff that can change sizes and lengths at will. -The spinning forward palm motion at the last "I feel like Son Ogong" on the first chorus before it goes to "I love my team, I love my crew" - it references Kamekameha, an iconic move in Dragon Ball Z. -The final coda of the song, both lyric and choreo, referenced another iconic move in Dragon Ball where the character gathers energy from the whole world to be released to the sky. -The final lyric being "This is the ending song of this manhwa (comics/cartoon)" and the motion of closing a book in the choreo

Thanks for checking out Seventeen. Since, you seemed to have enjoyed it, I hope you would check out their past songs/albums too. I assure you, you'll enjoy listening to all their songs. I have been a fan from their debut in 2015 and have never been disappointed with what they've put out. Pledis Ent. really hit jackpot when they placed this 13 individuals into 1 group. How can a group of this much members have such equally talented individuals of singers, dancers and rappers is really amazing. I love Seventeen!

As this song was inspired by the cartoon Dragon Ball and the ancient Chinese story called “Journey to the west”, it has a lot of references to the story such as the flying cloud, the power pole and especially the last scene where the members were standing in front and the backup dancers were their clones, which is an iconic ability of the Monkey King. That choreo also shows the members, as the Monkey King, are the real deals and the rest are all fake.

everyone beat me to it this time so no SUPER (hehe) long comment from me! yes, this song is about mythical figure sun wukong, and also goku from dragon ball, as he is a character inspired by sun wukong, and relating their own journey to the figures. this is the song (and album) that seventeen are entering korean music awards season with, and has won them the daesang (grand prize) at the fact music awards so far!

some fun facts: this mv was filmed outside a large unused building, and the directors hooked up all the lights in the building to turn on and off in pattern, so that's not cgi but real! this mv also had 200 dancers alongside seventeen ☺️
