In this video, I'll explain to you the link between glyphosate and agroecology. The bond seems pretty solid, in fact: Is the herbicide an indispensable tool for soil conservation? Or can conservation agriculture do without it and move towards more organic modes of production?
With the European Commission proposing to re-authorise glyphosate for another 10 years, I thought a closer look at the science behind it was in order, combined with a little reunion: You'll be seeing clips in this video from interviews with four farmers I've visited in the past. They're all advocates of agroecological approaches, but they have very different views on the matter:
- Sébastien Méry is a cereal farmer in the Gâtinais region of central France, with 200 hectares of wheat, barley and maize, which he’s been sowing directly into cover crops ever since switching to no-till. He's a classic conservation farmer, that is, and regularly sprays glyphosate to terminate his cover before sowing.
- Jérémy Ditner farms 85 hectares of miscanthus, soya, maize, wheat and potatoes at Krebsbach farm in Alsace, eastern France. While committed to the principles of soil conservation, he's also a staunch proponent of organic farming, and so doesn’t use chemical pesticides at all. His approach is one of "organic soil conservation agriculture".
- Alain Krebs, a cereal and livestock farmer in eastern Burgundy, is a founding member of GIEE Magellan and a co-founder of INRAE’s CA-SYS research platform. Feeling he couldn’t stand for the use of glyphosate anymore, he converted his 325-hectare farm from conservation agriculture to organic farming.
- Félix Noblia is a farmer in the French Basque Country. At his organic Larouss farm, he cultivates 150 hectares of cropland and pasture for grass-fed cattle, using what he calls an "opportunistic management” approach. Part of his land is no-till, while the rest is cultivated with shallow tillage.
In this video, I'm also looking at the properties and uses of glyphosate, as well as possible alternatives to it. For this, I spoke to Xavier Reboud, scientist at INRAE and author of their 2017 report on the phasing out of glyphosate, and with Stéphane Cordeau, coordinator of INRAE’s CA-SYS platform.
