sometimes it’s glorified, but more often than not it’s just a brutally honest telling of a person’s life experiences. many rappers who struggle with addiction write lyrics about being trapped in that cycle, and how much suffering it can bring. that allows anyone else who has had that experience to relate to the music. just like many gangster rappers back in the day weren’t glorifying violence, they were telling violent stories from their own lives. the violence was a byproduct of their upbringing and surroundings. and yet other people in those circumstances could relate to the music. they also saw how it was for someone to make it out of that life, Biggie always rapped about how he used to be caught in the cycle of violence but rap was a way out for him, and a way to provide for his daughter and his mother. Biggie often celebrated no longer having to be involved in violence in his music. but most of the violent lyrics were again often referring to the violence as something they wished they could escape. you did have a lot of young people misunderstanding that message and associating violence with being cool, just like today you have young people associating drugs with being cool because their favorite rappers have music about struggling with addiction. i’ll admit that some rappers straight up glorify things like violence and drug use, but i think they too misunderstand why so much of hip hop’s subject matter deals with heavy topics like that. it would be like a female rapper making music about how she used to be a sex worker but rap allowed her to get away from that life and how terrible it was, and then everyone thinks she’s glorifying prostitution and completely misses the message.

I've listened to Tom's song a few times now and I never heard anywhere where he said black people are all turning sons into thugs and daughters into hoes, etc. It's about a music genre, not an ethnic group. They are the ones getting offended, but as the saying goes, if the shoe fits, wear it. If it doesn't fit, don't wear it. I guess they think the shoe fits as they are stuffing their feet into it.

@@garenthal9638 That's a pretty silly assertion. Do the Swiss own yodeling? Did country music "culturally appropriate" yodeling? Do American's "own" freedom and the idea of inalienable rights? Does an artist own not only the precise order of the words his or her song was arranged in, but also the words in general too? Can anyone actually _own_ an ideal or a style or a genre? No, not really. A genre is not a specific song. It's a style. Artists can own their own lyrics and tunes, but they can't own the genre itself. And it's equivocation to say black people are rap and rap is black people. Rap is a genre, not a people.

The guy who made the atomic bomb, made it and gave to us b/c Hitler was on the verge of the same bomb and was going to use it worldwide, in many countries that where Hitler wasn’t winning. It would’ve been a lot bigger disaster. Plus, it ended 6 years of wars all over the world, it ended WW2. It stopped Hitler from dropping his own atomic bomb on many many countries. 100% it's pretty funny to watch them get so mad that their narrative is challenged and that someone speaking out against it gets this much support. He makes it all about race, plus he has all of his facts wrong. He sees what he wants to see and is mad that people as a whole are finally realizing that the world is changing in a direction he doesn't like.

I like that people are getting wise to and starting to shut down the argument by Black people that you cannot criticize them or their behavior without being racist. I think people by in large are tired of hearing people weaponize their race to immunize themselves from criticism. Claudine Gay and Fani Willis being two other high profile examples in the last few weeks that desperately attempted to play the race card and face planted for it.

The irony of Vlad highlighting Cole and Kendrick, is that they’ve both been critical of rappers who DO promote drugs, promiscuity, gangsters and guns in their rap. They may even have collaborated on a track or two where one or both of them did so. Interesting how it’s acceptable for them to say that, but not for a white rapper who, in my opinion, is actively trying to make the world a better place. Talib is one of the greats and one of the founders of the genre, but he got this one wrong. And so did Vlad. Edit: I didn’t realize that Kweli was a racist. Now that I’ve watched the whole video, I’m well aware of that.

What I found interesting was that Talib said “not all rap is like that”, but then said that his own music not being like that is an exception to the rule… perhaps the rule is what Mcdonald is talking about?

Imagine growing up in a world where a particular race had invented almost everything you've ever used, continue to use, almost everything you learned in school, and instead of showing any appreciation, you call them evil every chance you get. Everyone knows who contributed the most to the world. If you don't, maybe that's why you're lost and can't figure life out. It's easier to create nothing, play a victim, and criticize people whose ancestors built the world, but also had slaves. I talk to older blacks, and they remember growing up in a city that never heard gun shots. Rap culture has destroyed the black community. Blame the people who created everything. How convenient...

Why isn’t Tom there to refute the claims of these people? Also never heard Tom say he was a Trump fan not that I think there’s anything wrong with that. Trump never said that “immigrants” are poisoning the blood of America he said Illegal immigration is poisoning our country.

Well, it's obvious that Talib is blowing it out his rear end. If there is a racist in the group, it's very evident that it's not any of the white men in this group. If I said to Talib that the sky is blue, he would reply that since I mentioned color, I must be a racist. The guy is uninformed, he's prejudiced, and is exactly in the group that Tom's song is aimed at. It's also obvious to me that he has TDS.

I’ll clarify talib’s point… he believes black ppl deserve a pass on everything. Which is why the black community as a whole is in the state it’s in. Crying racism isn’t going to solve any problems. Accountability will.
