CelloWisdom:
Bach is the supreme genius of music… This man, (Bach) who knows everything and feels everything, cannot write one note, however unimportant it may appear, which is anything but transcendent. He has reached the heart of every noble thought, and has done it.
-Pablo Casals

I felt she played beautifully. Her playing reached me deeply in my soul more than the master.

so there're lots of different thoughts on Bach. she's using bow grip typical of the baroque period, and bowings from typically German editions. probably just not the legato sound we're used to.... her runs are really clean though.

The Bach preludes can be rather free but the rest of the movements of all six suites are dances with names that fit that period so IF one takes too much liberty with the rhythm the dancers will fall over. Just saying.

Indeed I really like the feeling she's going for in the prelude, but it doesn't work in the dance movements I think. It's just breaths in the wrong place too many times, or that's just how it feels to me :/ Lovely sound though

bach is subjective. Ik this was 7 years ago, but still bach is entirely up to how you would like to interpret it!!!!!!!!! Maybe she wanted it that way. who knows!

No two interpretations of the suites should be the same. Cello suite masterclasses to me are exercises on making great musicians lose all soul and sound just like someone more famous.
@MrYb4ever
@MrYb4ever 9 жыл бұрын
mjeffbr bullshit. Masterclasses arent here to copy the interpretations of the teachers. They just have to give them some inputs and give them another opinion and way of looking at the piece. But it's never something to play like the master!
@mjeffbr
@mjeffbr 9 жыл бұрын
MrYb4ever Well, that is not how I see them, or at least the vast majority of them; it is true some masters emphasize the "other way of looking at the pieces", but mostly it is about never playing right and monkey see monkey do. No, I am not angry at any master, it is just the boring and useless nature of masterclasses speaking to me.

This is not a masterclass. It’s a guy talking way too much in random directions and not delivering much value to the student. Watch Gautier Capuçon’s masterclasses at the Vuitton Foundation and you’ll see what a true master really putting time and effort in helping players reach their full potential is.

Guys, Peter played the suites best ever!! He is utterly great. He is sometimes a bit metal, you might also say mental- but that‘s good I guess.

Sometimes the instructor needs to say, "You play beautifully. I have nothing to add." . . . The young lady sounded terrific -- better than his rendition. The fussing over the bow was tiresome -- and his tempo was rushed. . . . Why shouldn't different artists be allowed to perform the work with subtle variations?

I'm just not a fan of the way she plays Bach. She's a talented cellist but I just think that she takes breaths in the music in the middle of phrases, especially the Courante. This is a personal preference but I also don't like how she holds the first G of every "set" of eighth notes in the beginning of the prelude. I think it takes away from the music and is really disconnected.
@rdobsn
@rdobsn 10 жыл бұрын
If you watch Yo-Yo Ma play prelude, he also holds the first G but the way he plays if different. Not so much as a lengthy note but more of one that compliments the piece well.

Everything about the suites is personal preference, I like them all, sometimes just for the sake of originality, that is why I can listen to them every day of my life.

I completely agree. that's the beauty of music. Even if a player does not stick to what the composition says or what the recording may sound like, the player has the freedom to bring in their own styles and to adapt to their audience and preference.

Pieter, if you get your body language in check you'll be much more helpful to these players. You know your shit, don't get me wrong, but you'll convey more authority and confidence when you are less spastic and loose with your hands.
