Pig charges bear and defends her farm in encounter caught on video

Years ago, I saw the story of a woman that had a heart attack in her kitchen. As she was lying on the floor, she looked up to see her pig standing over her. That pig squeezed through the doggy door, scraping herself in the process, ran out onto the road and laid there to get the attention of a passing motorist! At first, there was no one, so the pig got up and ran back inside to check on her owner and then scraped herself again as she squeezed through the doggy door and laid down in the road. Finally, a young man stopped and followed the pig inside and called out, “Your pig is in distress.” Then he found the woman and called for help. She lived to tell the world about her courageous pig.

They aren't very smart. They are just territorial and will protect their space. They are relatively smart, but not as smart as a dog. Even the bear is probably much smarter than the pig. In general, predators are smarter than prey animals. Also, domesticated animals are seem "smart" not because they are actually smart, they just evolved next to humans so they can understand and communicate with humans better, which appears to us as intelligence.

Luckily not older and hungry bear. Young bears can be confused. There is also a video of a crane to chase black bear. When bear gets to treeline from open area, it turns to look back towards crane and looks like asking "why, I was just walking when you charged for no reason" 😅

The black bear was there for prey, it can smell all the animals in that pen easily. People mistake the quiet movements of these animals for cutesy-wootsey antics like it's Disney's The Jungle Book. News flash- it's not. We're lucky the pig was there, and lucky black bears can be shy and easily threatened before they go in for the killshot.

When I was 17 me and a friend were at a county fair There was a pig pen with a bunch of pigs in it Just as I walk up to it to look at the pigs, one pig came over , turned around and just stood there directly in front of me like a guard dog As long as I stood there it also stood there I then went to opposite side of the pen and that same pig came over did the same thing there No matter where I moved to around the pen that pig would also move there my friend walked away scratching his head Later we went back to that pen and that same pig would do it again

Thank goodness for the brave pig. The lady obviously loves her animals, but I would suggest investing in a better fence Not only are there bears and panthers to worry about, but coyotes, foxes, even raccoons and possums if she has chickens. A livestock guardian dog wouldn't hurt.

maybe the bear was just lonely and curious about the other animals and wanted to play. Bears are always hungry though and probably would have caused some havoc with the chickens or possibly a goat. Pigs are great and super smart. Loyal and protective. Tough as nails as well. I was a construction contractor working on cellular antenna tower sites on a remote mountain in Hawaii. I’ve seen a few wild pigs up there and they usually ran away as I drove up the road to the antennas. But one time a huge boar with tusks just stood there in the middle of the road staring at me so I stopped my truck. He obviously had no intention of letting me pass. I honked my horn and the pig wasn’t afraid. I opened my door and started to get out of the truck and the pig charged me. “Oh sh*t!” I said, and got back in the truck. The pig backed up and stood there still demanding I don’t move. I could have just ran him down but I like pigs and all animals, and was more curious about this odd behavior the longer this standoff went on. The pig sort of nodded at me, glad I understood his command which was, “Don’t Move!” Then he grunted toward the side of the road where his sow and family of piglets were waiting to cross the road to the stream in the woods on the other side. So cool. The boar stood there like a crossing guard on steroids as his family safely crossed the road in front of my truck. Then he grunted and followed them, giving me the green light to move on. I was obviously in his territory and a threat to his family but I wasn’t attacked since I obeyed his rules. Much respect to all the great pigs in this world.

@@deborahcornell171, Thank you so much Deborah. I’ve always been an animal lover and wanted to be a zoologist as a kid but couldn’t afford college so I became a contractor instead. I still studied animals though and was a volunteer animal rescue officer and foster parent for the SPCA. What puzzled me at first with this pig encounter is, why he didn’t just wait til I passed and then cross the road? I was the only truck coming up that private dirt road that day so no point in putting himself in danger, but then it dawned on me. It was an intentional standoff. He wanted to assert dominance in his domain and THAT was the point. I felt lucky to be a part of this display so very important to him, trusted enough to see his beautiful family and then allowed to go about my day. I’d forgotten about it until I watched this pig standing off a bear video and remembered being that bear a few years ago. Peace and aloha to you and yours always. 🤙🏼

I once knew a farmer with a 3 legged pig. I asked about it and he said that "he's a special pig...he saved my life on night when my house caught fire. he used his snout to lift the latch on his pen and made his way into the house to wake me up and save my life". Unfortunately, a wave from a bear is a warning sign of threat or an attack. If you ever see a bear do that, it's a grave warning.

This proves how gentle bears really are. They are polite. We leave dog food out at night for anyone who is hungry. These animals are so savvy. I can hear them crunching the food in their mouth and then after a few minutes they leave. I suspect they don't care for dog food very much, and after a few minutes they are gone and on to the next treasure they can find. The bucket has rarely been found empty. We are pretty much vegetarians but whenever we have grilled bacon or salmon we get every creature over here. Bears have such gentle dispositions. If our dog can run the bear up the tree, that says it all to me.

@KrazyKat007 Happy 4th independence Day, which is true freedom of unfounded fear due to lack of knowledge. This is my 3rd year off grid, and no one can tell me when I have had first-hand experience. I kid you not, the videos of the bear sitting next to the Russian fisherman are real. I suspect he's been fishing there quite a while, long enough to make peace and friends with the bear. Just remember that not all of our fears are founded. So many and most are ideas in our mind based on each one's own insecurities.

Black Bears are typically not the type of killers or hunters in the way you would think. Their diet mainly consists of vegetation and insects and fish. They really don't like hunt and kill animals, it's not in their instincts.
