I seem to remember crushed up charcoal was used to clean teeth historically. Don't quote me on that, but it does seem viable : mildly abrasive, little to no taste and widely available. I imagine it might even share some of the adsorptive properties of activated charcoal for improved cleaning.

Great vid, always love to see things made from scratch as it shows 'real' chemistry. Instead of using lab ready, pure chemicals it shows the amazing pathways from nature to product and helps us see our roots. A little advice with your condenser setup though, have the input at the bottom and then the whole condenser will fill with water so there is more mass to absorb the heat and more area to absorb the heat from. I have been a chemist for quite some time and it was one of the first things we learnt in labs and our lab teacher would get annoyed if she saw someone with it set up like that.

I'm going to kill these bacteria by feeding them so hard, they die!
@micahphilson
@micahphilson 6 жыл бұрын
ImpGimp, that only works with pure honey, but in your mouth, it's going to get diluted by saliva and just be a high-concentration sugar mixture, perfect for bacteria. You'd have to slather on pure honey and let it sit for a minute or two for it to have that effect, and then you'd have to clean it off completely, or else you'd be leaving sugar on your teeth, defeating the whole purpose.

I've often heard people in the minimalist community go on about their homemade toothpaste which is made out of coconut oil and baking soda. Hearing a dentist say that a lack of flouride is bad for the teeth puts confidence in me about ignoring them.
@abonynge
@abonynge 6 жыл бұрын
Gonna copy paste my comment because it seems relevant. I like how the dentist said that every patient he has seen that didn't use fluoride toothpaste has a mouth full of cavities like that means that not using fluoride toothpaste guarantees a mouth full of cavities. Many people go years without brushing their teeth whatsoever without a mouthful of cavities, just because people who do not value dental hygiene finally show up to a dentist 20 years after their last visit does not mean that what you see in their norm. They wouldn't be seeing you if they weren't having an abnormal problem. How many people that use fluoride toothpaste does he see with mouthfuls of cavities? Because if fluoride in your toothpaste fixes all the problems we really don't have any need for routine dental care.
@abonynge
@abonynge 6 жыл бұрын
To add a small explanation as to why fluoride treatments isn't a requirement, you only need fluoride when your teeth are lacking it. If you have healthy teeth, then the fluoride is doing nothing. If your teeth are starting to become deficient you need fluoride, however you need very little and for almost everyone brushing once a month with fluoridated toothpaste would prevent that from ever being the issue. Many people naturally have healthy enough teeth that they can go their entire lives without brushing without having any notable tooth decay.
@LEBeck-ww9yl
@LEBeck-ww9yl 6 жыл бұрын
Is your water not flourinated? You don't actually need fluroide to come from toothpaste, there's more than enough flouride in your drinking water to support your teeth. Many people who use charcoal toothpaste use it because they want to avoid the bleaching agents found in commercial toothpastes. Some of my teeth are artificial implants (crazy rare genetic fluke and then resulting complications) that have been color-matched to my real teeth. I don't want a toothpaste to bleach my real teeth and throw off the match. Further, some of the skin grafts in my mouth are really sensitive to really acidic or really alkaline chemicals, so I really don't want a store-bought toothpaste.
@abonynge
@abonynge 6 жыл бұрын
I actually forgot about flourinated water since I personally live on a well. Flouride is naturally occurring in water, but not in significant enough levels to cause significant protection, 7 parts per million is considered enough to protect your teeth to a considerable level.

Reverse the flow in your condenser. You not only want the coolest water flowing into the end of the hot streams path because this increases the difference in temperature for each point along both paths and allows for a higher total thermal transfer between them, but also because it will fill most of that air space in the top and obviously make it work as designed.

Andy, a lab safety tip: Never add acid to water, always add water to acid. Dripping acid into water splashes it everywhere as you saw.
@evancrouch4506
@evancrouch4506 6 жыл бұрын
Kaleer101 This isn't true. It's much more dangerous to add water to acid. He did this correct, even though there were MANY other lab safety concerns.
@TheSucread
@TheSucread 6 жыл бұрын
This is absolutely horrible lab advice. It's much, much, much safer to add acid to water than to do otherwise. A large portion of water enables dissipation of thermal energy (coming from water). When you add water to acid (which is denser than water) a thin layer of water forms near the surface, which reacts with acid and boils violently spurting acid (not harmless water) droplets everywhere.
@FallingRiceballz

other way around, water can boil on contact with the acid and splatter. Acid/base reactions are exothermic so it'll heat on contact with each other. water has a relatively high boiling point so it can absorb more of that heat before boiling. His splashes were from dropping the acid from too high up not from the reaction.

He also opened the dropper up to much and it splashed.

Uhh... totally got that bass ackwards my friend... Here's a phrase that might help: Do as you otter, add acid to water. The trouble here is that he wasn't just diluting an acid in water, he was conducting a reaction as well (other than the dissociation of the acid and formation of hydronium ions that happens when simply diluting an acid in water only) . Its been a long time since I last did a procedure like this but I suspect that: 1.) He should have been using a lower molarity sulfuric acid solution and 2.) He should have done the reaction in smaller batches within a thick-walled Erlenmeyer flask.... And dude seriously needs some PPE

Andy's got a new edge here., a vibe. Also.."of course more poison gas" , and especially not trying it is unlike him. In the past he'd have been curious or acted that way. It's understandable given the big loss, and not a bad effect. Hang in there dude! We're with you!

Very nice video! c: In steam distillation the essential oils will be collected in the receiving flask not in the boiling one, but you have to extract it from the solution using an organic, apolar, solvent (like dichloromethane ore diethyl ether); this way you can achieve a good purity.

Try using a brückner apparatus for steam distillation next time because it really saves time and actually works much better and more effectively. If you need help with setting up an apparatus for steam distillation I could help you out because I wrote a a small thesis on the topic and had to figure out the process as well. If you need information just contact me and I would be happy to help.

a little tip from a chemist: On the condensor, connect the cooling water the other way around that it flows from bottom to top. Firstly because then the whole condensor is filled and second the coldest point is at the the bottom of the distillation setup
