Just saw this film and loved it. So many quiet scenes that were so powerful, and that dinner scene with Adam Arkin killed me. Loved the score, as well, and it was shot here in Portland, so it’s always fun to see our town on the big screen. Agree that Nicolas Cage deserves, if not an Oscar nomination, definitely as many awards recognitions as possible.

Rewatched the film today - so incredible, and noticed a few subtle things that we hadn’t before. Also, according to IMDb’s trivia part of this movie, the film had to be filmed in just 20 days due to the low budget. Talk about nailing every take!

I give Pig 5 squeals out of 5. Nicolas Cage is never uninteresting and, on occasion, he's great. What really makes the movie is the other actors playing off Cage's performance. Alex Wolf, Alan Arkin and the actor playing the chef that was fired by Cage's character. That scene was intense in the build up of how Cage stripped him down.

Thanks for providing this excellent forum. I felt a gut-level fascination with "Pig" that increased with every passing minute as I watched it for the first time last night. A fascination akin to what I feel with David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive: that I'm being pulled into the perspective of someone who has committed a great wrong in the past and is now walking his/her own personal calvary toward self-recognition and restoration. Robin seeking out and submitting to a cruel beatdown electrified me. He's doing penance, but why? For what? The congealed blood on his face announces his degradation to everyone he meets. What has he done to deserve this brutal retribution? On the revenge-story surface of the film, we think that Mr. Big up in his mansion has attacked Robin out of pure motiveless malice. In the dining room scene at the end, it becomes clear that Robin owes Mr. Big every bit of pain that Robin has collected from the moment his home is violated and his cherished pig is stolen. Two things in the movie's final moments confirms this for me: 1. The young man -- dozing off to sleep in his car as Robin walks back home -- has a stunning resemblance to young Nicholas Cage. 2. The song "I'm on Fire" that plays as the credits roll. I'd never heard it before. Hearing it for the first time last night as sung by a very young girl made my flesh crawl: so creepy to hear what sounded like a 15 year-old telling about her seduction by an older man while "Daddy" is gone. Some trespass/violation has taken place. Then I listened to Bruce Springsteen's very sexy/gloomy rendition of "I'm on Fire." This is about regret for a serious wrong. "I'm on Fire" alludes to sexual passion, yes; but it also conjures up visions of burning in hell for violating another person's innocence. Then I recalled getting the tiniest glimpse of Mr. Big's comatose wife -- a tragic botched suicide -- in her own personal hell: as well as her son listening helplessly outside her door and her husband hardened by grief and suppressed rage. That's when the entire story pulled together for me.

I didn't like the movie. I didn't feel like he had an emotional bond with the pig until very late in the movie when he said he missed the pig's companionship. They should have established that way earlier, because up until that point I just thought he was just mad that he lost his primary source of income. Some scenes early on showing how much he loves his pig with affection would have been nice, but we only have one scene of him truffle hunting with his pig and the next time we see the pig he's just kidnapped. Big narrative oversight in my opinion. They wanted us to assume the catalyst for his mission was due to his love for the pig as opposed to getting him back so he could continue his livelihood. It's not until he explicitly says so in the last quarter of the story that we understand what is driving him. Then he randomly shows up at some fight club to get his ass beat for clues for his pig that felt so random The only thing I really liked was the cinematography and the font for the film's title and any onscreen text And because Nicolas Cage plays the protagonist, it feels like a silly/ludicrous concept because his history of over acting taints all of his performance for me. I never saw John Wick so don't have any bias towards those movies and I went into this movie blind based on everyone's advice, all I knew was that it was universally praised, and 99% of the time I enjoy a movie that gets that level of love.

@@ImpressionBlend absolutely. Something in relation to ‘Pig’ that’s both funny and also a testament to Cage’s performance: my better half jokes that one of the places where “our Venn diagram does not overlap” is in finding Nicolas Cage watchable. I think he’s interesting and even capable of being phenomenal (the Kaufman twins in ‘Adaptation’ always immediately come to mind), whereas she’s just not really a fan. But with ‘Pig’, we *both* just absolutely love him, and we both discussed how we forgot it’s even him while watching; he’s Robin Feld, the character, through and through. And the way he “truffle hunts” to the core of people, understanding ways of bringing out what’s hidden deep within them…this movie is just so wonderful. Again, could go on and on and on.

@@zachpajak7493 I LOVE "Adaptation"! Plus "Lord of War" (a big favorite for me) and "The Weather Man" always come to mind and excellent Cage performances. If you look at his filmography, there are actually more good movies in there than you think, and saw what you will about him often going way over the top, but at least he's never boring, right?
@zachpajak74933 жыл бұрын
@@ImpressionBlend TOTALLY right! :D He seems incapable of being boring, it’s just not in his DNA. And yes, his performance in ‘The Weather Man’ is fantastic, and ‘Adaptation’ is simply one of the greatest movies (probably my favorite movie from 2002). Thanks for the reminder of ‘Lord of War’, which I’d always meant to see-when I was in high school, I absolutely LOVED a movie by that same film’s writer/director, Andrew Niccol, titled ‘Gattaca’. If you haven’t seen it, it is, I think, a beautiful sci fi film (with a great cast, including a not-yet-famous Jude Law in one of his fabulous, rich supporting performances). Now I want to do some kind of mini Cage-a-thon this week, lol. Also, a movie that it seemed like only me and Roger Ebert thought was a 4-star movie is Martin Scorsese’s ‘Bringing Out the Dead’, in which Cage plays a most unusual EMS driver. Worth seeing!
