"I treated that pigeon with antibiotics [...]" This speaks volumes. Still, I saw many of them leaving the flock and the falcon didn't bother to chase. I was impressed by how long he assessed the situation and flew around them before the decisive attack. One might say the falcon might not have been too interested, but the end proves otherwise. Awesome video!

There are two falcons with different hunting styles too. I know them from the direction where they leave when they catch a pigeon. This falcon is the one that prefers to bomb in the middle of the flock. The other falcon that leaves in the opposite direction with prey, prefers to chase separated pigeons. It tries to break the flock a few times and as soon as it notices a pigeon above his level it abandons the flock and starts the long chase after that pigeon. It tries to push it higher and higher and chases them far out of my zoom range. The best pigeons survive and get back hours later or the next day. The weak ones can't handle the long chase and try to drop to the ground from the clouds, with very little chances. I love this "Chaser" falcon and with the right zoom I would film some very interesting scenes. But the other falcon took more of my pigeons. It is also smaller and the "Chaser" is dominant, it kicks his ass sometimes.

It is very sad to see that the hawk eats its prey very badly, it tears it apart and tortures it, but we cannot do anything about it, it is all a game of nature.

Years ago a friend and I were hunting our falcons at his farm. We had a couple of flights but no success. Once again his shorthair was on point and it was his turn to fly so he released the falcon and we waited for her to get up to pitch but she had different ideas. Canada geese were flying to the lake behind his house, since she'd never gone after a goose before we waited. Suddenly she came down and hit one which fell to the ground. We rushed over to save the falcon from her mistake because Canada geese can inflict serious injury upon a falcon. I took the goose home and prepared it for dinner the following day for my family and my parents who were visiting our farm. I made the mistake of bragging that the goose had no shot in it and served the bird. Unfortunately my eldest daughter bit down on a piece of shot and informed me it did. I'd not seen anything other than a few holes where the falcon had it. Most of those holes were shot we found out after dinner. The point is out in the field we saw nothing to indicate the goose was injured but that falcon saw it and took advantage. I think most experienced predators will see something wrong and take advantage of it which cleanses the prey species of sick or injured individuals

Very interesting story. A bit funny too. It looks like their natural instincts work even if they are kept as semi-domesticated hunting birds. It's the same for pigeons, they are still more or less wild and able to survive in nature (racing pigeons anyway, not sure about many of the other ornamental breeds).

Your right! I've seen banded birds in flocks of feral pigeons, not one was a fantail, a pouter, a jacobin or any of the ornamental breeds so far as I can remember. There was humor in what happened that day and at my table the next. We did have to take his falcon to the vet that evening to get a few stiches.@@Pigeonmaniacom

I believe the falcon simulates the first and the second attack to test each pigeon's reaction (speed, moves, regrouping time). When the deathroll comes, the inbreed's timing on the previously mentioned chapters must have been the lowest from all the flock. As you know, crossbreeds have more vitality than inbreeds. Plus the previous sickness which needed treatment. Of course, the falcon doesn't know genetics or medicine but he scans them very well, instinctively. Sorry for the one down! But there are 2 objective aspects: 1.the falcon earned it fair and square; 2. the flock has one weight less on its road to survival through winter army. Tough job! Hat down for the gladiators who got their dinner!

Very well said. There were 4 inbred brothers. 3 are already gone. After this one filmed, a few days later a brother was taken. It wasn't sick but I remember it was a bit off a few months ago as a very young bird (it's like the falcon can "read" medical history). The 4th is the smallest female and I don't have any notes for her in the medical records, I am curious. In the previous year, from their mother I also had 4 youngsters but not inbred and all 4 survived.

A falconer was telling me the other day, that what I perceived as misses are in reality feigns, and I later found consiserable scientific research to support his conclusion. Needless to say, they really do seem to be "reading" a flock to pick out the weakest ones.

For some reason, they can always detect the weak ones, if it's not apparent to the breeder. They almost seem to have a sixth sense. This is largely why they kill so many Rollers here in the U.S. and always the best ones first. With Rollers, we cultivate a genetic weakness and it definitely shows when the Birds of Prey show up.

@Pigeonmaniacom
@Pigeonmaniacom 7 ай бұрын
Thank you. I wouldn't know what tips to post, I never treat as a flock for "prevention", for me treating healthy birds is silly, although this is common in today's lofts. We just have to focus on the best food, clean water, fresh air, and a loft pigeons enjoy (with dark corners for nests and enough v-perches for all the birds), sun access, no overcrowding (I make this mistake a lot), etc. Commons sense. Of course, we have to treat individually the sick birds when they have problems.

The pigeon wasn't paying attention for a moment. This year the birds of prey are not as aggressive. sometimes I don't see a hawk for up to a week. then he comes by briefly and doesn't really attack and just flies away. Last year the hawk was much more aggressive.

@Pigeonmaniacom

It was a young bird like many from the flock. I don't know about experience, they had hundreds of attacks before, I would call that experience. I think the health status was more important this time. Just 2 matures are taken until now from the total of 17 taken. Both taken by the hawks at ground level not by falcons. One was taken yesterday because it went crazy and didn't want to enter the loft. It was getting dark and started raining (over the snow) and it kept flying until the hawk ambushed. It also kept a young bird out with his crazy behaviour but the youngster survived.
