Falcons and hawks playing with my racing pigeons. Please select 4K video quality. Years ago I started filming birds of prey attacking my pigeons because I found it fascinating and also because I didn't like the myth pigeons fanciers kept saying, that the falcon never fails. I think I posted hundreds of falcon attacks failing. Then some fanciers changed their mind. I am being told that the birds of prey only play and they don't want to seriously attack. I am also told I hide the losses and promote the wrong idea that birds of prey never win. I always updated in the comments about losses and also posted some falcon winning videos. As of Jan 27, 2023, there are 9 pigeons taken and 80 still surviving. I also removed a few lazy, sick or wounded birds from this flock. So, here are some new clips of "birds of play", playing with my pigeons. My years of selection and learning how to maximise survival are worthless, the experience of pigeons that had hundreds of falcon and hawk attacks are worthless, the birds of prey just play. I don't know why fanciers keep their pigeons locked in the lofts for the cold half of the year, the birds of prey just want to play... ;) 00:00 - Birds of Play 01:10 - Close-up footage of a mature falcon flying. 03:54 - Single pigeon ruining the entire flock strategy. 04:40 - Normally, a small flock of 100% fit pigeons wouldn't wait for a hawk after starting a sprint like this, but this flock is too big and there are some bad pigeons in it, so they decide to wait for the hawk in the end. 10:22 - "Safety in numbers" - when you separate from the flock, get ready for a serious sprint. 12:18 - My pigeons are very healthy, look, they drop a lot of down feathers, even in flight. :)) 13:37 - I think this is the moment when the falcon took "Red Alert", she was the only one diving on the direction of the falcon, a mistake that many pigeons did when they were taken. 14:01 - Random rocket pigeon. 14:09 - Airplanes. After a very hard intense match with the falcon, after seeing it taking a pigeon and knowing they are safe after that, the entire flock of survivor pigeons dives down at the loft almost with no more wing beats, like airplanes. 15:26 - When the flock comes back home, the pigeons that survived individual chases with the falcon and got to hide in the loft get out again to join the flock.

I don't even have to whistle in winter, cold weather plus controlled light feed make them very responsive. Whenever I go to the loft they drop from the sky knowing I will bring the food... I have to stay away from the loft if I want them to fly.

I think this was one of the videos that included one whole flight and that's what makes it a study. I tried to figure out part of the pigeons' strategy and from what I can tell, they always react as a flock to whatever move the falcon is making, even when that is not a direct attack. It must be realted to their position and how they calculate the falcon's needed time and moves to reach them or surprise them. Indeed, those separating themselves from the flock are easier targets but for example the falcon preffers to keep tracking the flock, while the hawk likes to follow individuals more. Is there any other things you've noticed? Or am I wrong?
@Pigeonmaniacom
@Pigeonmaniacom Жыл бұрын
Yes, most of the time the hawk focuses more on separated individuals maybe because it doesn't have the energy to chase the flock for minutes like the falcon does. With the falcon, you never know, which makes it even more interesting. Sometimes it goes after separated pigeons, sometimes it goes after the flock. Sometimes it starts a chase after a separated pigeon and it suddenly gives up, going after another one. It is always on the move and you never know what's next. It has a complicated mind. The most successful attacks I saw were the ones like at the end of this video when it took Red Alert... bombing the flock with max speed and breaking them in the middle, looking for the pigeon that remains on the falcon's direction of attack the most (the more they suddenly change direction, the more they cut falcon's speed, so they try to change at least 90 degrees if not more, ideally 180 degrees under the falcon).

With the pigeons flying and getting hit by the hawks around your loft does help them but I honestly don’t think it’s does help them when they’re on race day, they are far away from home and panic … resulting in not coming back. I don’t think we have no chance of stopping the bird of prey issues unless a disease start wiping them out for a few years…

@@hendry147147 I don't care about racing as much as I did years ago and I do this winter flying just for my pleasure. However, just an interesting note: last year our first long distance race over the mountains from Poland was a big smash, many losses. I lost all my yearlings, except 2 late breds from the winter falcon team, one of them beating all my matures, being the first home and the only young bird on the club in the race day.

@@gothamsbirdman9500 you have slightly different hawks. Cooper, although fast, cannot attack the pigeon all the time. Cooper is too small for that. The second, if I'm not mistaken, is the red-tailed hawk. The second is a very slow and not agile predator. The goshawk is completely different, it is slightly slower than Cooper. the goshawk may eat pigeons every day. In Russia, in some provinces, the diet of the goshawk is up to 90% precisely pigeons.

The good video. A flock of sporting pigeons uses a higher speed than their wild ancestors. But how much it helps is not yet clear. The hawk still easily overtakes them, while not even particularly working with its wings. The purpose of the hawk is not only to wait for someone to panic and separate from the pack. The goal of the hawk is to lower the flock of pigeons to the ground, where he is the best sprinter. I have seen many times before how a flock of jackdaws or pigeons resisted an adult hawk. I had to see the attacks of 2 different hawks at the same time. A flock of wild pigeons constantly changed direction, but tried not to descend. And the jackdaws so generally tried to climb up.

Very nice video and there are also very nice attacks on your pigeon. 👍👌 Of course, seeing it live is a completely different experience than in front of the screen. In front of the screen, you don't get the adrenaline you get from live attacks. This is how pigeon breeding is really fun if you let your birds fly even in winter and then experience this spectacle of nature. That's exactly what I do. The birds of prey have a really hard time getting to your food. 😅😂

Some of the falcon attacks very high in the sky are actually better on the video because with the naked eye you can't see them well. Yeah, it is all very interesting and like a strategy computer game. The breeding and developing the pigeon strain over the years is also a great experience, can't wait to breed the next generation from the best of them. I also love seeing the oldest ones "graduating" another season. My pigeons are ok, but I wish I had ones that crash hawks into buildings, like yours. 🤣🤣🤣👍

@@Pigeonmaniacom Pigeon breeding is like a computer game for adults. 😅😅😅 A shooter game. Aim of the game, try to avoid the sniper and survive 🤣🤣🤣. You live in a very nice area. The view of the snowy mountains is fantastic. You breed pigeons so that they can avoid the birds of prey and I breed a very special breed that only I have. A race that should eradicate the hawk 😂😂😂 I had a really nice attack from the hawk a few days ago. Unfortunately I couldn't film it. It was too far away and very high. I couldn't see that with the naked eye. Only with my binoculars could I observe how the hawk flew high into the sky after an unsuccessful attack after the pigeons and from there fell about 200 meters like a stone from the sky onto the pigeons and caught one.
