Check out the 2024 update...now with AI: • Pigs On The Wing (Part...
This video features the 8-track version of the track with Snowy White's guitar solo! To me at least, this is the definitive version of the song.
***Update***Two years after I uploaded my original video for this track, I noticed the video has finally become available for play. When I uploaded that video and realized that it would not be seen, I edited it for a live version of the song. Since the video is basically the same as featured on the currently available live version, I wanted to update it with something different, new, better....and wanted to use the version featuring Snowy White's guitar solo. Animals is probably my favorite album cover of all time (the composition, lighting and colors....especially of the sky and clouds!) and I wanted to try and light it up and bring it to life. I'm thrilled that I might finally be able to continue with some Pink Floyd vid concepts...especially the three monster tracks from Animals (and my long stalled "Echoes").
Original vid description w/Wiki information:
"Pigs on the Wing" is a two-part song by the progressive rock band Pink Floyd from their 1977 concept album, Animals, starting and wrapping up the album.
Animals ties Wish You Were Here as my favorite Pink Floyd album. It's a extremely dark album, but it captures the band at the height of their considerable musical prowess.
The song is divided into two parts, which are the first and last tracks of the album. Both are in stark contrast to the album's middle three misanthropic songs, and suggest that companionship can help us overcome our flaws. The casual listener may ignore them for the most part; however they are keys to the album, summing up the album in its entirety in their short 1:25 time spans. Roger Waters apparently refers to himself as a "dog" in Part 2: "Now that I've found somewhere safe to bury my bone/And any fool knows, a dog needs a home/A shelter, from pigs on the wing." Another allusion is found in the line "So I don't feel alone, or the weight of the stone," which refers back to the dogs being "dragged down by the stone".
According to Nick Mason, and confirmed by Waters, it is a love song directed towards Waters' new wife at the time, Carolyn. She was really the only one Roger's friends had ever met who could hold her own in an argument with him; according to Mason you had to be very good with semantics to win an argument against him. Waters wrote the song because that's all he had been looking for all along: someone who could stand up to him, an equal.
The songs are constructed simply and feature no instrumentation besides a strummed acoustic guitar played by Waters.
On the 8-track cartridge release, the song order was changed, and Parts 1 and 2 were played back-to-back at the beginning of the album. They were linked by a guitar bridge performed by Snowy White. Snowy would play the guitar solo in live performances on the 1977 Animals tour. On the last US leg of the performances, David Gilmour would play bass guitar instead of the electric rhythm guitar he played on the European and first US legs of the Animals tour.
The complete version of the song, including the instrumental bridge, was re-released on Snowy White's Goldtop compilation album in 1995.
I hope this video is (finally!) the start of several I hope to do by Pink Floyd....I won't rest until I've completed a video every track on both Wish You Were Here and Animals.....course it might take a while?! LOL!
Anyway....it's a start....hope you enjoy it.
[Lyrics]
If you didn't care what happened to me,
And I didn't care for you
We would zig zag our way through the boredom and pain
Occasionally glancing up through the rain
Wondering which of the buggers to blame
And watching for pigs on the wing.
You know that I care what happens to you
And I know that you care for me too
So I don't feel alone
Of the weight of the stone
Now that I've found somewhere safe
To bury my bone
And any fool knows a dog needs a home
A shelter from pigs on the wing

I know this song is supposed to be a love song from Waters to his then wife. But, to me it has always evoked a sense of longing for a time and maybe a feeling that was lost long ago. Snowy's amazing, emotive solo just magnifies that feeling for me. Hard to put into words really. Thanks OP for this version.

I don't find his voice at all beautiful, but it is perfect for the stuff he sings. And he always does a brilliant job of vocals that were originally DG's. He's a good vocalist and deserves respect, and if you find his voice beautiful I can't tell you you're wrong; you obviously have impeccable taste. It's just not the word I would use.

My era! And yes.... I had the 8-track player installed under the A.C.... kept a matchbook and my zigzags stuck underneath the tape... so that it didn't drag! I bet you younguns don't even know what I am talking about! This is the best song pink floyd ever did... along with "Dogs"... listened to them every day (literally every morning with my buddy "Hutch") on my way to HIGH school... along with Led Zeppelin "Presence"... which was their finest work, also ("Achilles Last Stand" and "For Your Life" are Pages' finest hour)! Wish I had a dollar for every time I played those 4 songs... Fuck the critics. Noone will ever know what those albums did in my soul... Changed my heart forever! I always wondered why they did not release this version of "Pigs on the Wing" on the "Animals" record? Now I know... jealousy... wrong lead guitar player... Why else would anyone EVER leave a lead that beautiful off of an album?! Anyway.... when Hutch and I got to the prison (I mean the "school") each morning we would all sit and discuss Animals in the "smokeshack" between 1st and 2nd period classes... (we always skipped 1st period) That's right... we actually had a school board approved, designated smoking area at the school! Can you believe it?! We all smoked cigarettes between classes! Ahhhhh....nothing like that Marlboro light before D.E. class to get those virgin lungs climatized! There was no politically correct B.S. to deal with back then! Don't get me wrong... life sucked... but just not quite as bad as it does now. At least the air back then was still only H20 (hold the aluminum, barium, and lithium micro particles)... and there was still no drug testing! I remember... I remember... I remember... (Bob Seger moment)...

I would not have known had I not been told it’s not DG. It definitely has that same sound as the solo from songs that ended up on “The Wall” and “The Final Cut”. It’s simple and really ties the songs together. This is probably my second favorite alternative version of a Floyd song (behind the Stéphane Grappelli version of “Wish You Were Here”, probably my favorite all time Pink Floyd song).

My wife and I have this ongoing discussion over Floyd, before and after Waters. I said without Waters there would be no Pink Floyd, she said if Gilmore never joined, Pink Floyd wouldn't have made it. As I told her, Gilmore was, is, and always will be a replacement member for Barrett. I look at it this way: Waters wrote all of their greatest albums, but don't get me wrong David Gilmore is a guitar God. My favorite solo's of all time are by him. Now my case is you have to have both to make Pink Floyd work, it just works better that way. Her case is after Waters left they continued to be successful, I said of course they are still playing Waters songs live and using the name. It's just not Floyd without Roger Waters....

Wow, what a beautiful solo. This was like a missing piece to the album; Animals was already my favorite Floyd, but now I love it even more. It would have been interesting if the solo linked Part 2 to Part 1 rather than the other way around. As in, if you played the album on a loop the solo would lead back into Part 1 seamlessly.

@@gururajchadaga Sorry to be "that guy" but actually with the way an 8 track works is it is on an endless loop, so if the solo was after part 2, it would play directly into part 1 and start the whole record over. They did this with the Wall where it ends directly into the beginning of the record with a man saying, "Isn't this where we came in?" and with Dark Side with the heartbeat beginning and ending it
