They never explore Mumm-Ra's origins. Not even a glimpse. He probably was an ancient egyptian priest who sworn loyalty to egyptian Gods. In return, they gave him immortality and superpowers. Heck, he'll probably be still around after the Thundercats are long gone from Third Earth.
