Getting any rank is acquired by getting enough points in the level. You can get either a D, C, B, A, or S Rank based on your performance at the end. Getting to B isn't too difficult if you're aiming for most of the collectibles in a level, but if you want to hit S rank you will have to pull up some leg work.
To get a P Rank in a level, it is expected that you do the following things within one run of any level:
Kill an enemy before leaving the first room
Get enough points for an S Rank
Find all toppins
Find all secrets
Get the secret treasure
Go through the Lap 2 portal
Never drop your combo once

I don't know if it was intentional by the creators but when pranking this level, the electric guitars (2:20) would always kick in at the exact moment I left the ship and began the pirate captain cannon segment, and as it's placed between two slower paced indoor sections, it always hit absolutely perfect. Potentially my favourite level in the game if not for War.

I really like Crust Cove's theme. I listen to it when I'm playing tf2 or when I'm doing something that isn't boss fighting in terraria or when playing BTD 6 or payday 2. Now I was the guy who told myself "I'm gonna S-rank every level and then move on to the next." Funny thing is: I unintentionally P-ranked this one as I was keeping my combo up and ready and as I reached lap 2, I realized what was happening. I immediately exclaimed "holy shit" quietly to myself, my dad heard it and said "calm down" and I had to frantically explain what was going on. Heart beating quickly, hands shaky, head having 20 thoughts at once happen, that ended up being the first level I P-ranked, and I didn't even do it on purpose

I would imagine that it’s to top up your score before leaving a level. Taunting adds 20 points to the total score. The reason why they don’t do it infinitely is because of the combo timer to the right, P-Rank only persists if you start a combo and never drop it throughout the level; taunting doesn’t add any time to the timer, so they taunt until the timer is about to run out and exit the level to complete P-Rank.

The first one is just plain hard for me compared to the other barrel parts in this level and I always seem to forget to get in the barrel in the second one.
