I love your no nonsense empirical aproach to fishing advice. If it works it works and you can demonstrate it from experience. Not sure about circle hooks but you can catch big fish on them. Not sure you are convinced yet? Thanks for the recent videos on your tackle and set up, i feel you give honest opinions without sponsorship bias. Many thanks

I’ve always fished trebles and decided to change to circles for unhooking purposes. I lost so many fish so have gone back to semi barbless trebles. I do use single hooks for live baiting and hook the bait through the tail. The reason I do this is because if I don’t catch I know the live bait will be able to recover from a hook hole through its tail. Also when it comes to live baiting the pike will take it more ferociously so you can always guarantee and good hook hold

Lovely pike mate. I started using big single hooks about 17 yrs ago. I realised the benefits with no flying trebles, no 5 minutes of untangling the pike twisted and stuck in the net ( which nobody ever shows).i changed after a deep hooking incident and landing numerous doubles on size 16 hooks after taking skimmers and roach, which was fun😂. Honestly i will never go back to trebles really don't see the need, a decent pike will inhale a 6 inch bait no problem. Im a huge advocate for it and genuinely see no difference in my catch ratio. Have a season on them and see how it goes 👍

In the US for Pike fishing I use circle hooks exclusively now until winter ice. 2 years ago I hit the pike hard and caught 113 pike with one single gut hooked fish on a circle hook. I use Gamakatsu circles (7/0 for whole smelt or herring, and 5/0 for cut bait). It was critical for me to ensure my hook gap stayed open, I would use bait thread to secure the bait and hook gap. After that many pike I finally landed my 20+ on a 7/0 gama circle. I have landed many 15+ lb pike on circles. I let them run with it for about as long as I can stand before engaging the drag. Trebles work great but dealing with a lot of big fish during my pursuit I got sick of the death swirl with treble hooks flying. Still the only way to go for ice fishing for me is trebles, and if I wanted to catch more of the small and midsize pike that bite, trebles will always have a better hook up ratio. Its funny that in my state pike and carp are hated... they are legal to shoot with bows or spears and boaters will tell you to throw them on the bank and let them die...

now using circle hooks, actually octopus hooks from Gamakatsu for the 2nd year. and now all rods I use them. I don't miss more fish than I did before. but the unhooking is so much easier. mostly they are in the hook of the mouth love them

Proof there that circle hooks work! I've been using circle hooks for a couple of seasons now and there is no difference in hook up rate to trebles, all those saying there will be, without trying them, it's in your head. There is however massive advantages over trebles, easier unhooking and less likely to be a deep hooking problem, no flying trebles in your landing net, safer handling, store traces in a little wallet instead of a rudy great trace bin, once you get used to them there's no going back. Best pattern I've found is Mustad Demon fine wire with the barb crushed, size 5/0 or 6/0. Catfish hooks are way too heavy gauge.

The main thing in fishing is having confidence in what your using, I always use trebles and won't ever use circle hooks again 👍
@MarsOatom-oy8zeАй бұрын
A single treble never let me down. it's so much better for the Pike with unhooking 👍.

Love your channel. Can I ask why do you slaken the clutch after every cast
@obsessionwithanglingАй бұрын
Once the baits been cast out I slacken the clutch so I can attach a drop off indicator and also to avoid moving the bait thats on the lake bed " avoids the bait catching debris etc"

Great video. I got back into pike fishing again last year and made the decision to only use circle hooks as I hate trebles. The only time I dropped fish was when I forgot not to strike into fish and just pull into them and it was a real eye opener. The only thing I'm still not sure of is the best place to hook the bait ie tail, middle or head. Any suggestions?
@obsessionwithanglingАй бұрын
Tail should be fine aslong as your not casting too far , avoid hooking the bait in the head just to avoid deep hooking in the pikes gut 👍

Each to their own ,i will never use circle hooks ,i would be on edge re : the hooking potential ,great looking pike though m8 😊
@davidhunt6322Ай бұрын
Definitely don't think they're good for legering Lee. I like to hook my bait under the dorsal just enough to tip the head of the bait slightly downward, using an 80g float cast out to just above bottom depth and just trot the bait in the flow...with the head tipping down and moving along it gives the impression of a feeding fish,I've had lots of success using this method plus it keeps me active, but it is the only situation where I use circle hooks. Having said all that you're killing it with the single hook rig! Great fish!

and the another thing the drills are much harder. because they are hooked on the outside of the jaw instead inside I have the feeling they fight harder, less pain 🤔 maybe

Best method for circle hooks in pike fishing are to leave them in the carp section in shop and to never be put into a pikers tackle box , next time anyone asks to do anything carpiker style say don’t be ridiculous
