Buffy the Tesla Slayer finally has some clothes on. In this episode we cover the fibreglass body which has now been installed on the race car. We also show off the rear brakes and have some decisions to make on the wheels and tyres.

I'm glad it doesn't have the Carrera turbo style flares on the rear guards as they are wider but don't accommodate a larger diameter rim. I had them on my Superbug to allow wider rims I had made. I always wanted a tilt front or the Aero look kit that was available at the time but life got in the way.

Fuchs made the classic 911 "Five leaf" wheels, and they now make the same classic style in 17", 18", 19" sizes. And I would probably go with the 18" size to provide sharp handling, but give the tire some sidewall for better acceleration. For the color I would go with either photochromic medium blue to purple, or a deep candy red.

1) Think of Herbie as a large airfoil Wing, Air has longer distance to flow across top than bottom. That Higher velocity air creates lower pressure above Herbie. that is Lift. 2) Now think of a See-Saw / Teeter-totter. The Wing pushing down on back of Bug is great, but also cause LIFT on front of Auto; The pivot is the rear axle. 3) separation of air at Rear deck area - causes low pressure area in back glass area. 4) now think of land speed record cars, and low Coefficient of drag street cars - a long tear drop tail to reduce above mentioned effects
@Surestick88
@Surestick88 Жыл бұрын
That splitter in the front will add front downforce. There's a high pressure area at the front of the car that is relatively flat. The high pressure will act on the top of the splitter and create downforce. I'd guess the motor and battery pack in the front will also provide a bit of "downforce" in the front too (and better weight distribution than a stock Beetle).

Paint wise, Probably down the lines of Tamiyas Blitzer Beetle, still a tongue in cheek nod at an electric classic (Toys they're not...) , but I think lesser known, and more at home on a race car.... Wheels wise, it's difficult, as what look good on one car, can look terrible on another, so maybe a set of custom spilt rims, in the classic 'smoothie' style ,which would give you a clean (sleeper??) look, and also the options to get the offset & width spot on.

As soon as you said "paint". The first thing I thought of was HERBIE. I guess it would depend on if you want a kind if tongue in cheek approach or not. For your competitors who may not be aware of the potential of your electric car it would be an eye opener once it ran away from them.

I like the idea of running a set of the 18x8 factory VW 8 spoke wheels with the big center cap that came on the 12-19 beetles. (I think this is the part number for the wheel I am speaking of: 5C0601025H8Z8) Of course they would need widend to proper race spec but there are plaecs that do that. Then I would think about taking that big factory center cap and whipping up your own Aerodisk. Probably more work than it's worth but it would give you just a hint of retro while bringing the car into the modern electric era while keeping it all Beetle themed. As for color I would just keep it simple and do one base color and do any numbering or sponsor vinyl over that. My color of choice would be VW paint code LE6B (AKA Mountain Green)

- Slate Grey on the Porsche 356B in your previous video looks fantastic. - British Racing Green as mentioned previously. - Herbie the Love Bug, although that'd be in white, but with full length stripes over the bonnet, top, and boot. It would need a number as well. Great choice though. - Type of wheel is a bit tougher without knowing the size and offset you'll need so they sit close to flush with the wings. - I like a couple of the factory "Heritage Wheel" style rims VW offered on the last model sold. They seem to be available in different sizes, but the offset might be a problem without knowing this measurement. Also, how concerned are you with unsprung weight?

It might not be as aerodynamically effective but I think a spoiler on the back of the roof a-la Delta S4 or Delta Integrale would look better than the one currently fitted. @ Electric Classic Cars, @ Spud Productions I've a tire/wheel question below, but first, comments on livery and wheels. Personally, I would LOVE to see Gulf Oil livery. I was at the Vintage Races at Road America fifteen years ago, and there was a 917 Longtail in Gulf colors...lovely look and sound as it blew past the speed trap at full song. To see that livery, right down to the wheels, on a short and tall Beetle would be appreciated as both a nod of respect and a helluva joke! Now, that question on the wheel/tire combination that was used for the trial fitting in this video: The way I understand tire sizes and rim sizes, something didn't look right. The '285' should be measured width of the tires at their widest point on the sidewall, right?...and the '9 inches' (230-ish mm) is the measured width between the wheel's bead seats, right? The bead flange on the wheel is usually about 15mm/side for a total wheel width of 15 + 230 +15 = about 260mm...so a 285mm tire's sidewalls should bulge past the wheel by about 25mm, (12.5mm/side) but I'm not seeing that. Instead, I'm seeing the tire's max width right at the bead and tapering to a tread narrower than the wheel width. Do you, by chance, have a 10-inch-wide wheel in hand instead of a 9-inch? I heard you say that the wheel you were using was the only 18 X 9 wheel in the shop, so I'm assuming it was measured twice before the tire was mounted...but I've done that very sort of thing...cut off the end of a stick of wood twice and had it STILL be too short! :D Also, who was the bright bulb that decided tires should be measured in millimeters for width and inches for diameter? I'm just guessing here that it might be one of us American types...you know, like the two that managed to miss Mars with a billion-dollar NASA probe because one was sensibly working in the metric system and the other was measuring in pecks, pounds, bushels, quarts and teaspoons! I'd hate to see a 1-inch goof (25.4mm) mess up your wheel fitment choice when the fit is that tight...only to realize after assembly that you could have had another inch of rubber driving lightning bolts into the pavement! As with the rest who've commented, anxiously awaiting, and hoping for, a great first roll!

@@ElectricClassicCars Good to hear that you caught it before it caused you too much trouble. I'd figured that was a safe bet, but I had to say something just in case. I've been staring at the same problem myself for a bit now...fitting oversize wheels to a 200,000-mile Toyota Celica beater car so I can buy the tires I want. They aren't made in the stock size. While at that, I'm also developing a suspension rebuild 'kit' for when I find a clean 7th-gen Celica. That might actually be a swap for you to look at... The Toyota Matrix was built on the same basic floorpan and had an AWD version. An AWD or RWD 7th-gen electric Celica would be as unexpected as a Beetle or Mini.

Herbie would be a good place to start, but here's what I would do. Herbie's number was 53, if I recall; replace it with a number associated with the electrical conversion. From the USA .... Very good video on the custom build. Like that you're able to source out a fiberglass body like that and use it in the manner you are. I can see you really think things through and take pride in the work you do. Looking forward to seeing this move on it's own.

Ive been looking forward to an update on this build, looking great. Are you not concerned that large rear duct on the roof is going cause the rear clam to be ripped off? I assume there will be some sort of structure in there guiding the air down to the motor, will the rear clam clamp to that structure?

They have been run beetle cup races with this bodywork all over the world for years, some super fast tracks too. It will be fine

I kind of agree with you, there needs to be some way the air can exit out of the rear once the roof scoop directs it into the rear clam. 👍

Wheel style? It's a Beetle, so fit Moon Discs for extra aero.

not sure it its in budget, but seen a 911 "GT3 GT Wing Rear Spoiler for Fit New 911 992 2020 To 2022 Fiberglass Unpaint" on fleabay , would look awesome😍😍 on your pocket rocket as for the wheels definitely Rota RM200, 18 x 9.5 inch, also just watched Fonzie on DYC who used an awesome blue/purple colour shift, excellent excuse for a YT collaboration video

Need to have your logo + lightning bolts. Maybe go bright. Lime green to represent green power with black wheels and maybe roof. ?

@@ElectricClassicCars I've been struggling to find a North American dealer for Ronal wheels. I think a set of the Turbos would look great on my 500 Abarth but the European dealers all want an arm and a leg for shipping.
