My reading of that was always that the Drake crashed itself because it realized the crew needed to learn cooperation, planning, etc, which tracks with how it suffers no apparent damage beyond the loss of the drive key, which, absent Olimar, the crew would cooperate to find or the computer could “find it” (knowing roughly where it landed) when satisfied with their development. Edit: they suffer loss of food, as well, but the lack of apparent physical damage is still interesting.
