I love that base turn; to lose altitude on final...seems like a very experienced pilot. Especially on that approach.

You can look at the numbers for this field all you want, but having lived in this area a number of years, it still amazes me that they squeezed an airport into that valley, lets land there occasionally.

Can't claim the manual focus skills. (yet) The image stabilizer helped immensely as well. The lens cap almost took down the shot at one point. Thanks for the props regardless! I think I have justified confidence in the pilot. To quote a Ghostbuster, "We got the tools, we got the talent! It's Miller time!"

Guys , it looks like he had a heavy XWind on short final , it was a good landing but I think he was keeping his options open in case he wanted to waive off. It's easy to be an arm chair pilot and critique him but before you try it yourself .

You can't waive off at that point, what you don't see is to the back of the camera man is a huge mountain that you can't really outclimb. Waiving off after lining up with the runway is super dangerous
@Fraiyia
@Fraiyia 3 жыл бұрын
Matthew Johnson well I have never flown into that port . I’d have to see. Waiving off is only dangerous when conditions don’t permit it . In IFR , go arounds (missed approach) happen and we have nice holding patterns and minimums , out here in DFW don’t bust the bravo or mess with minimums cuz they don’t play . I did most of my training under a bravo and even the basic vanilla 172 r type can Vx climb , they are in a Pilatus’ pc12 . Powerful ! High vertical climb rate and good back side power curve performance . He was prob a bit to fast and had a bouncer . Everyone has a bad landing . I once had a Cub ground loop on me in training . That shit happens . We have runway incursions and lots of other things out here . On my way out to PRX m this bone head was doing his run up at the hold short line . Here I am at the run up area in a 172 and this dude was about to blow me over the fence . Pilots are not infallible , we make mistakes. This dude prob had “ get on the grounditus ‘ and came in too fast . ( maybe he had to pee lol )

@@Fraiyia I actually fly PC-12s for a living and flew into NC06 just this morning. That airport is super sketchy and known for wind shear at the approach end of 12 (likely occured because you can see the trees whipping), but by the time you line up with 12, you're basically committed. The PC-12 is an awesome plane with great short field performance, but it's not flawless. Elk River is at 3,500ft and unlike the DFW area (I did my training in East Texas as well), density altitude is a big concern. You have a much higher ground speed relative to airspeed, and if you aren't absolutely on your numbers, you're going to go long on this runway (12 is downsloping for most of the runway with a steep upslope at the end). And as far as going around, turning left, there's a mountain a few hundred feet off the runway, maybe less, straight out is terrain that even a PC-12 can't outclimb with any reliability I'd be willing to bet my life on, and to the right there is a golf course with a mountain on the other side. Your best bet would be hook right over the golf course climbing with as slow of an airspeed as possible, and try to make a teardrop left turn and go out the way you came in, but that turn needs to be really really tight to make it, and at slow airspeeds, wind shear, terrain, possible tailwind in the turn, there's a lot that can combine to make you kiss granite. Forcing the bird onto the ground is usually the best option there. For more info, just look up Elk River here on KZbin and you'll find more info about it.

The PC-12 is a very slippery aircraft. It is not nearly as easy to bleed off speed, especially considering there are no spoilers or speed brakes on the aircraft. It requires very little landing/takeoff roll, however, so effectively the pilot came in too fast, likely due to dodging mountains and concerns over shifting winds (need to make sure you're carrying extra speed to ensure you maintain enough lift in a shear situation) however, he had plenty of runway to bleed that speed off and be safe.

Considering that was a telephoto lens, you did a great job. I don't know if it was auto focus or manual. If it was manual focus, than you did an even better job! As far as the comments about the pilots skills, welcome to the internet, everyone sitting at a computer is a pro no matter what the subject matter. No one knows the conditions so as far as I'm concerned, it was an outstanding job. Great photography, keep up the great work!

Question for pilots. Why do they use landing lights in the middle of the day? It's my understanding that those aren't exactly "long life" bulbs so it seems they would want to save them for night or crappy weather conditions. Are they still 28V incandescent / halogen bulbs, or have they modernized with gas discharge / HID type lamps?

Speaking as a humble 4000 hr GA Flight Instructor, theres doesnt seem to be too much wrong with the approach and landing. Touchdown speed may have been a few kts fast hence the float after the first touchdown.....but was very well recovered. delt with the bounce, re flared, not forcing it on the runway. Just curious why people are so keen to cleanup the aircraft while at speed on the runway. Plenty of time for that on the taxiway. Btw, Elk River looks just gorgeous.

In most light twins, the main advantage of the second engine is usually that it gets you more quickly to the crash site! Many light twin crshes result from attempting things the aircraft simply can't do on one engine, whereas what you should have done is close the other throttle and hit something soft, whilst under control. A single engine makes the decision for you, whilst not giving you the problem of controlling an out of balance plane that is going down anyway.

You think that approach was a bit dodgy? Try searching KZbin for "Landing Rwy 29 at Milford Sound" For some reason, people compiling these "most dangerous landing" videos seem to miss this one. You used to need a special checkout to be able to go there, you probably still do, but with the right training it is far more spectacular than dangerous. Fiordland, South Island, New Zealand, if you are wondering where this airfield is.

Beautiful approach, but when you float like that in the PC12, if you let the speed bleed off too low, the stick shaker/pusher will activate. Not a good thing to happen when you're 3 or 4 feet off the runway. Ask me how I know, lol.

Don't worry about my goals. They were pretty high and I already achieved them. Now I am aiming lower but still up. The problem is that I am surrounded by people with high goals. Everyone seems to have high goals. That's because it is easy. Their problem is the quality of their plans to achieve the goals... And after all I sometimes think that my wife is more confident with life than me. Still being above average successful on the financial side she is just a modest person. I think I am jealous:)

***** Being a heavier and faster aicraft makes it that much more critical to not let it float on landing as it will be harder to stop later. Had it been a lighter and slower aircraft, the float would not have been such a critical mistake.

***** Not to worry, I have ample flight experience - have been doing it since the early 80's. His approach speed was (or should have been) whatever the manufacturer recommends for his landing weight and if done right he wouldn't have floated.
@coriscotupi
@coriscotupi 9 жыл бұрын
***** It's not a matter of runway dropping away or crosswind causing "lift" (it doesn't). Back when my student pilots made up those excuses for such gross errors I'd just look at them in the eye and say, "stop making excuses, let's do another approach". Look, there is no runway "drop" or crosswind that will make an airplane float along a third of a runway, period. . The airplane in this video crossed the threshold at a speed way above it was supposed to and spent an eternity bleeding it off before touching down. He might have added a few knots for turbulence or whatever, but if the float was THAT long, he should have gone around. It's that simple. Stop making excuses for him.
@coriscotupi

***** Whoever has actually landed an airplane knows that floating a third of a runway is just wrong. PERIOD. I have done this many, many, many, many THOUSAND times. Dream on. Goodbye.
