Disclaimer...in order to do single leaf propagation you NEED a small section of the main stem in order to produce roots. I didn't properly explain this in the video. My apologies.

Beautiful plant and top notch info as always! I have found that they don't tolerate direct sunlight at all and the leaves fade out and turn yellow very fast. Had a big motherplant that was growing in all directions but up - but it was making babies left and right. The leaves never got really big though. During winter it massively shed leaves (like 10 a week) even though I could not find any pests or illness. So this spring I decided to give it a restart. Cut it up completely and now I have like 8 new plants (water and soil propagation both worked for me). I found that the soil it was in was way too compact and probably not the right mix (it was one of my first tropical houseplants a couple of yrs ago). Really curious to see how it turns out this time. Will definitely try staking it up this time around.

At around the 3 min mark into the video I show the type of soil mix that I used for the pilea. These plants loose their lower leaves as it grows. I have just left the small babies to grow and that usually fills in the void left by the lost leaves.

I make it a point to only water them when dry.
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Marites and sorry for the late resonpse. Losing the lower leaves is pretty normal for this plant. I have decided to let the new gorwth (babies) continue to grow and fill in the bare lower stem. I have mine off to the side of a south window and it really likes that spot. I repotted into terracotta because the larger the pot you go the more then soil stays wet at the bottom. It was okay in that small outgrown dollar store pot because the roots soaked up the moisture quicker then I could give it....if that makes sense. Hope this helps

They say it will not propagate from a leaf, unless you cut a small part of a stem with that leaf, kind of like a slice on a side of a stem where a leaf is connected. How did your leaf propagation go?

I'm assuming you can't just chop the top off and put into water and expect roots to grow? I'm missing a lot of leaves on the bottom and would like a much to make it fuller. It was doing great last summer, but I neglected it somehow and it dropped a massive amount of leaves. It's recouping but looks quite pathetic.
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Жыл бұрын
It's actually quite normal for this plant to lose its lower leaves as it gains new ones on top. What I did to fill in the bottom was let all the new growth continue to grow and not cut them out or propagate them and eventually those will grow up kind of filling in that bear area.

Hello Farida! Sometimes leaf drop with these is caused by over watering or the improper soil. They like to be thoroughly watered but like to dry out. Once the plant starts to grow and mature, they do drop their lower leaves as they grow...so that is normal. I let the small newer growth fill in the bottom area. I hope this helps and good luck.

You can also cut the main stem just below the bottom leaves, set that top in water, and plant after roots have formed. Then cut the bare stem off an inch above the soil and new leaves will form, giving you two complete plants in time.

Over watering (soil too wet) or too much sun?

Oh my, I have the same issues! I think I’ve lost pretty much all the lower leaves on both of them. Got two and both are acting up on me.
