Check out my new Video • How To Make A DIY Trip...
In this video I'll be making a DIY pillar bench drill press drum sander with dust extraction. I used 13 mm ply for the base and 19 mm mdf to make the sander drums.The pillar drill drum sander table just bolts directly onto the bench drill table making it very secure. and the size on the table is 500 mm long and 300 mm deep. The height of the table is 100 mm. And is made of 13 mm ply.
I also installed a bearing so that the bench drill bearing wouldn't wear out By in stalling a small block of wood and press fitting a bearing into it.
Because I never had the correct size hole saw for the dust extraction hose I made some disks to act as an adapter.

After you uploaded this video i decided to make some of these myself, they worked great, after using them for a good few weeks the only issue I had is that where the sandpaper creases they have a slight lip/bump that always clogs up with sawdust and give that worn sandpaper impression, burnt smell and and increasing roughness while using them, i recently made a new one where i use sanding belts glued into a sleeve/barrel shape and the core expands to grip them, I made a video about it if you wanna check it out.

Brilliant! This is something I have often considered, in fact, Harbor Freight (in the US) has sanding drums for a drill press, but the side-load issue has always stopped me. I wonder if it might be easy to adapt this in such a way as to have an interchangeable top - one top to fit the sanding drums, and another with a grid top so you can use a palm sander on small parts and use the dust extractor for that? You could simply mount a piece of stock on the two mounting bolts and clamp it in a wood vise for use as a sanding extractor. You might need to make a cap to keep the dust out of the drum bearing, but some simple clamp clips on each side would seal the two tops down securely.

Thank you for the comment. That's a great idea the drum bearing is sealed so no chance of dust getting into it.

Hi Carl I run a high volume low pressure system which is bolted to the wall running 4 inch ducting to blast gates. And if I need to reduce down from 4 inch I'll reduce as close to the tool as possible. I've tried shop vacs but they are no way as efficient as high volume low pressure systems. Hope that helps.

@@AnthWood sorry if i wasn't clear enough but it was the timber block size that you put the bearing in that i wasn't sure about
@AnthWood
@AnthWood 3 жыл бұрын
@@cliffsaville2276 ah right now I understand. The block height was about 25mm below the top to allow for vacuum airflow for dust extraction.

One question for you Anth. Do you reckon the dust extraction, as you have it set up there, would be in any way improved with the addition of a grid of small holes drilled say in a donut fashion in the table around the drum??
@AnthWood
@AnthWood 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Yes I think it would help but only if your using high volume extractor. A small vacuum is better suited or the way I have it set up. Hopefully that helps out. Cheers Anth

How easy is it to change the sand paper?
@AnthWood
@AnthWood 4 жыл бұрын
Hi the sand paper just peels off. Just remember inert the sand paper into the groove first and using spray adhesive to adhere the sand paper around the drum. Hope that helps.
