These last few months have been difficult. I’ve been travelling a lot for work and 16 hour plane rides have a way of taking it out of a guy. I’ve been to Sweden twice in the last two months and, well, jet lag takes a surprisingly long time to wear off. I’ve been combing through games in my library trying to find something that will relax me but nothing jumped out at me. Then I ran across this video going over the latest patch notes for Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire. This was a game that made my eye brows raise initially when I heard the elevator pitch for it. An RPG where you play a pirate? Blimey mate, that sounds down right pleasant.
But I never bought it because the first game left such a sour taste in my mouth. I mean, it wasn’t a bad game, but the story did nothing to grab me and in the end, well, you know how this goes.
Well, this video about the latest patch notes couldn’t have come at a more fortuitous time, me harties, because I was in the midst of replaying the first game, and this time around, I played far more than eight hours, and you know what? The game was starting to grow on me, oddly enough. I still couldn’t force my way through it, however, so I was a little skeptical about the sequel. So when I saw that Obsidian released a patch that turned the combat from Real-time turn based and added an option for true turn based, and then I saw the game was on sale, it was as if someone grabbed me by the small of my back and whispered sweet nothings into my ear because me and this game were going to be spending a lot of quality time with each other.
So, does Pillars of Eternity improve over its predecessor, or am I damned to repeat past mistakes? Well, let’s dig in shall we?

Pathfinder is SO much better than PoE. I ended up pretty much speedrunning through PoE because I had high hopes for PoE2.. Turns out it was even more of a disappointing incohesive mess. Fan-fic Baldur's Gate with nothing interesting to offer. A world/story so generic, yet simultaneously introspective that it never pulls you in: So many cross-references to gods, characters and locations you don't even give a shit about.

To anyone watching who's interested - If you dump intellect in Deadfire, fair warning: every single buff or debuff will have a pathetic duration, as well as every heal or damage over time. You might need to cast an ability 3 times when once could have lasted the entire fight with the right INT.

Mutliclassing I think is the one thing they absolutely nailed in PoE2; Simple and eloquent, this is precisely the way multiclassing should be handled. I loved the system from the moment I saw it, and it was pretty much the one thing keeping me interested in this game. All in all the abilities of this game are awesome, although I do wish that they had made different categories for general feats, such as "Sword and Shield Style" or "Iron Will" and class abilities, such as "Lay on Hands" and such. All in all, this would be just to make an already good system better.

@@WideNerdy In terms of the trading companies, I guess the Valians are more like the Venetians while the Royal Deadfire company is more like the British East India Company, along with the Empire itself. The Valians are interested in whatever will bring them more money, while the Royal Deadfire Company is interested in military expansion. I don't really see how those are "functionally the same." They are two very different approaches to colonialism. Also the Huana definitely aren't socialists. They just have an indigenous view of resources. Honestly I think the biggest problem is that the game basically lets you finish all of their storylines up until the very last decision. Its not a perfect game, but I do think it does a few things a lot better than the first. After 80 hours I still didn't feel like I had a great understanding of the world and its functions. I did basically every quest, along with the DLC as well as read most of the books. Deadfire does a much better job of fleshing out the world outside of the Deadfire in particular. Still, the hook of the 1st game's story is much better and Deadfire definitely takes longer for things to get going.

Glad you're back. Your vids are always very thoughtful and get me thinking even if we don't always agree. I did here though. I think ships should've been characters and you should've been able to build a small "fleet" where you could choose your "party" to accompany you on the ocean. "Skills" 'stats" and "abilities/spells" for each ship would be determined by how you distribute your crew that you collected and the unique abilities they bring to the ship they are deployed on. Each ship needing one of your collected main characters on it as the assigned captain, just to bring some of their own special special spice to that ship's "loadout", maybe allowing a fireball if its a mage or a boarding party perk if melee. That way you could make light and swift "character" ships or a heavily armed one that maybe moves more slowly and give them all appropriate tools to their build, etc. Then, when you engage in the ocean, it plays out just like the combat on foot. You and a couple other ships engage an enemy squadron and positioning and maneuvering actually becomes incredibly important while managing your differently skilled team of ships...all in an isometric combat view like when on foot. And if you command one of your ships to board another, it then still gives you the boarding combat on foot with whoever you manned that ship with, resuming the ship combat once that has played out. This seems an obvious answer and I bet it was just the amount of work (i.e. $$$) it would have taken that prevented it from being a practical option.

Most of this is great but your opinion on int being a dump stat is just completely wrong. Resolve is, like you said, indeed a dump stat (which is tragic, cuz I hate feeling like I'm playing a weak-willed character but I also hate putting stat points into a useless stat), but Intellect is THE god stat. Spellcasters obviously need it for AoE size and duration, but martial weapon users and tanks need it for buff duration. A dumb fighter stops regenerating health early in the fight. A dumb barbarian has no area damage. I think the only thing you might be able to get away with dumping int in is a rogue, but I can't even say that for sure because I rarely ever play rogues.
@StratEdgyProductions
@StratEdgyProductions 5 жыл бұрын
You know what... I didn't think of that. I played my second time with a rogue and INT and Resolve wasn't important because the point was to one-hit for the assassin build so your status effects didn't need to stay up past one round. That's a good point.

I am sorry to hear Pillars 1 didn't grab you. It's genuinely one of my favourites and I have your video to thank for getting me into Torment Tides of Numenera, your opinion seemed like the most fair. Though Deadfire is awesome, but I feel like you do need the first game's immense lore and history to appreciate it fully. As an extra note, I must say it's really nice to see a Deadfire analysis done by someone who embraced this game's themes and politics, it's so wonderfully refreshing, too many just seemed to gloss over it as "alot of reading". (Which in itself is such a daft thing to say about CRPG's, it's a fundamental part of these games. You can have so much more lore, story and characterisation through text than with VA and animations).
@bonseez
@bonseez 3 жыл бұрын
this comment is a year old, but I agree with everything you said 100 percent. I do think it is a shame that he didnt finish pillars 1 before reviewing this. If you play through the first game, theres an attactchment you have to the world that makes the 2nd game so much better. Of course its always cool to see reoccuring characters too. The game not only makes you feel like your choices in deadfire matter, but that your choices in the dyrwood did too. It just feels like a truely epic fantasy adventure that spans worlds and realms. Something usually only novel series can accomplish. Which ties into what you said about the lack of voice acting and animations giving devs exponentially more freedom when writing dialogue. A lot of people criticised Pillars 1 for being slow or having too much reading/exposition, but for me that was one of its strong points. Its a shame that big budget AAA games have made people turned off by the fact a game isnt voice acted, or is from a top down perspective. Theres just certain things you wouldnt be able to do in a AAA game that you can in a game like pillars. This is especially pointed out with the recent release of cyberpunk. Though the game isnt bad at all, its not very good at being an RPG. In fact, I dont even think the game should be conisdered one. The fact they voice acted your character means dialogue choices are extremely limited, and you cant really decide your characters personality at all or....even roleplay, which is the point of a roleplaying game. Sometimes more ends up being less. Its a shame that Pillars 2 sold so poorly, and it really does break my heart we're probably never gonna get a pillars 3. Deadfire felt like the refinement of what they had created in the first game, and i really feel like they could have perfected it with a 3rd game. I guess these types of games dont really have much mass appeal at all these days, and that makes it hard to be a fan of them because they come so rarely. Especially with obsidian now being owned by microsoft, i doubt obsidian will make a game like pillars again. I guess we have Avowed, which is gonna be set in the pillars universe, but the gameplay and presentation probably wont be as wordy and nerdy. Apparently its "their skyrim", so i expect a very safe AAA type game with not a lot of reading, lots of voice acting, and a larger focus on presentation. Which is the exact opposite of what made me love pillars. I also agree with your comment on him accepting the world for what it is, a lot who reviewed this game didnt do that. I saw so many people get caught up on the whole pirate thing. I understand it might now appeal to you, but its such a tiny fraction of the game that it doesnt matter if you dont like it anyway. Sailing on your ship and interacting with pirates is maybe 5% of the game. The faction conflicts feel underappreciated to me, a lot seemed to pass it up. The political setting is really interesting to me. It wasn't just a generic story of "bad colonizers killing native people". The colonizers and the natives are actually the same race of people, which is a twist. The huana and ruatains were seperated by the cataclysmic event that reset eora. It ties into the games themes so well. Race doesnt define a person, their culture does. That even ties into the attribute system, which lets you have more freedom in who you play. You dont have to follow stereotypes of "im a wizard so im smart and weak" because all stats are useful to all builds. Basically, no one, and nothing is so black and white taken to an extreme level.

I had a similar experience to yours with your Paladin of Woedica. My first playthrough was a Priest, and priests are also encouraged to follow their god's favored dispositions. So playing a priest of Eothas, I had some choice dialogue and dispositions that I wanted to follow, and doing so led to some very satisfying outcomes to me. You can re-position the placement of AOE abilities by dragging the battlefield icon around while it's casting, and it won't interrupt the cast (which I didn't know for an embarrassing length of time). That sort of obviates the section here about having to predict running enemies.

I tried to cut a balance between the Valians and Huana in my (so far only) playthrough. Partly by design, and partly because that's just how things worked out--while the organization as a whole might be reprehensible, I value honesty, and there was enough potential for reform in the representatives I worked with that I thought it was worth working for a compromise between them and the Huana. Meanwhile I blew up the Royal Deadfire Company's headquarters. 10/10 would blow up again.

A great review Strat, I've been on the fence about this game for awhile now, but I'm sorely tempted after your frank review. The lore and story in the first game didn't get me the way other fantasy worlds have, including tyranny, DnD and even age of decadence. Part of that I think was in the sometimes stale writing, compounded by the exposition dumps. But it seems maybe obsidian have learned a few lessons.

That Woedica's Paladin order wasn't in during launch, and there was precious little the game did to acknowledge the fact that I was in fact a Darcozzi Paladini. Not even the quest that features the Darcozzi Paladini heavily had a single line of dialogue that "hey, btw, I'm a Darcozzi Paladin." That was what finally jerked me completely out of the game. I feel like the disfavoured dispositions also tell you a lot about the views on specific values of deities or paladin orders. For instance, While Woedica favors rational and cruel dispositions, the fact that she dislikes diplomatic dispositions tells you something about her view on justice. With some of the orders/deities it seems pretty clearcut. Eothas likes honesty and benevolence, so a dislike for deceptiveness and cruelty is fairly obvious. Yet these two traits are the favourite of Skaen, yet Skaen does not disapprove of honesty. He disapproves of aggression, which fits with his theme of quiet rebellion and secret hatred. Another example that I found interesting is the Shieldbearers who praise honesty and diplomacy above all else. Two traits that a lot of people seem to view as inherently at odds with eachother. Priests have a similar mechanic, but it struck me as much less of a deciding factor as the paladin trait. I would have liked Priest disposition to affect power levels of specific spells (like the free spell per level that you get from a specific god).

Intellect is definitely not a dump stat for a large number of builds. It directly effects AoE size and ability duration, which is huge for casters, chanters, etc. However I agree with the overall point that stats do not have a dramatic effect on your options (ie dialogue) throughout the game. The easier way to view this - that I use - is that stats are not absolute values. A value of zero in Intellect does not mean you are a drooling idiot; it means you're terrible at "a character's logic and reasoning capabilities" as given in the description for Intellect. Your character is just terrible at logic and reasoning; not talking.

Hi! Nice video! I'm just finishing my first playthrough of PoE II and I have to say that turn-based combat for me is the best idea ever because is the first time playing pillars that I cared about more than 3 habilities that I spamed.

Late to the party, but you were spot on about the turn-based combat. I've always been a fan of the real-time with pause combat, and I don't "dislike" turn-based. However, after just playing the first battle on the boat in turn-based combat, I knew I wouldn't like it. It took way, way too long, and I could only imagine what late game would be like. You'd probably have an hour long battle somewhere. Not to say this couldn't be patched in the future, but the damage needs to be scaled heavily on the turn-based combat. I had some long battles in Divinity, but they didn't "feel" that way. Maybe Obsidian can take a few pointers from Divinity / Baldur's Gate 3 (when it comes out) and patch it one day?

I'm glad you liked PoE2, it's great, although I can't agree with your opinion on first PoE (to each his own, ofc), I love its story, its lore, mechanics and everything, I've finished it many many times, and it's easy to understand all that lore info, you just have to speak with your first followers (Especially Eder and Durance) and a few NPCs in Gilded Vale and you'll understand all the recent events, regarding more complicated, "older" history you have to read the books, but that's not that important if you don't want to, also first PoE was very refreshing and started an avalanche of crowdfunded indie crpgs and I loved being crushed by that avalanche. Regarding Vailians in PoE2, there's more to them than just looking for profit, they're the most logical and scientific, they're not afraid of animancy and my character often believed that they're the only ones capable to rebuild The Wheel, to keep up the soul cycle without the gods, but sure, they do like profit. Keep up the good work, love your content (I know I'm necroing this comment section, but I often repeat your vids and I have this itch to comment on something you said a few years ago, hoping that it'll keep the vid a bit more alive)

Nice. I like the head guy..he usually does good vids and clearly knows his shit. I think I describe the dream scenario for ship combat above, but your post caught my eye because I ended with saying it was probably the money that prevented it. I'm shocked that ship combat the way they did it was still so expensive that it still topped everything else in cost. That's nuts.

I dumped over 200 hours for two play though in the first game. I would say the problem of the first game it’s too big, it doesn’t have a core, if they cut down a bit of side content, eliminate the number of character you can carry and eliminate number of team member there is, to focus on few and main storyline it would be truly great. White March DLC is fucking amazing tho, in some sense it’s even better than POE2, it got new sound track, new soul bound weapon, cool squad, new dialogue

Skipped to 17:55 and I got an out of context "of its predecessors dryness" and I don't want to find out if you're calling POE 1 dry or not and risk spoiling the conclusion of the aforementioned quest so now I have to 1) finish POE1, 2) play POE2, and 3) come back in order to decide if I should subscribe.

I absolutely adored the first POE game. But man is Deadfire a better game. In POE1 I played a Ranger. From what I learned of the gods I decided to worship Galawain. Just seemed to make sense. In POE2 I quickly grew to hate all the gods. They're incredibly Greek; by which I mean flawed to the point of acting like children. They are what they represent I cannot understand anything beyond their realm. Which is why SPOILERS!................. I ended up siding with the very being I was sent to stop. Eothas. He wants kith to be independent, free from the petulant gods & their influence. Kith are in truth no better or worse than the gods & should rule themselves. It only took a few conversations with Eothas to make sense of the war everyone goes on about in the first game. The war my companions told me was awful & catastrophic. Yet where I there I could now see myself joining that side. It's such a thought-provoking game & makes me appreciate the first one much more.

Your description of the real time with pause combat system is like, almost entirely inaccurate. It doesn't resolve in rounds at all and you have full ability to adjust at any time aside from when the action is literally happening. It's truly real-time, when characters take actions is based on timers but even after you choose an action you can move, change actions, retarget, etc. it doesn't work the way it's described in the video at all

also as others have said, intellect is far from a dump stat. the first game had more attribute checks but they moved away from it because it was double dipping in a poor way, that's what the passive skills are for
@rupertmcbutters1748
@rupertmcbutters1748 6 ай бұрын
It hurts seeing you disregard the intellect attribute as I think it’s one of the most universally helpful stats unlike more situational ones like might, perception, and resolve. Longer buff durations are exceptional even for monks, barbs, and fighters. Heck, I’m playing a high INT disabler rogue and it’s so much fun forcing horrific debuffs on enemies in ways that even wizards can’t do. I just have to congratulate the Pillars team for creating a system that allows such creativity. That being said, the lack of dumb dialogue in a series Tim Cain programmed for is heartbreaking.

It's a shame seeing reviews of this game from people who only or mainly played the turn-based mode. It means certain fantastic innovations and things about the combat are never mentioned to potential players. The AI editor for example is barely ever mentioned, allowing you program characters to do automatically do specific things in specific situations, so perhaps you only need to focus on your character or specific situations instead of micromanaging everything. The ability to simply slow down the combat speed so you aren't forced to pause all the time, or the fantastic interrupt system the PoE games have.
