President George Washington, in his celebrated 1796 Farewell Address, cautioned that American democracy was fragile. “Cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government,” he warned.
Two of his successors - Richard Nixon and Donald Trump - demonstrate the shocking genius of our first president’s foresight.
Pillars of Hercules is a documentary film which explores the concept of power and the abuse of power. It begins in 1971 with the Nixon Tapes and spans fifty years concluding with the insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6th 2021. The documentary uses stunning and seldom seen images paired with an original musical score to help the viewer experience the questions that are raised by the film.
The film soundtrack is at times lush and other times stark and startling. It features the Moog Matriarch as well as the Moog DFAM, Mother 32 and Subharmonicon. Also featured, a vintage Alesis QS6 and the wonderfully broad Stoneway piano patch.
