Thank you so much for not adding music to this clip. Just the sound of wind, waves and stillness is good enough

Smithy's Boatshed is turning into one of my favourite KZbin channels, for a variety of reasons, footage like this being just one, but the absolute gem is Iains no nonsense explanations of whatever he's doing coupled with his bone dry aussie humour that I'm sure goes right over the head of many viewers. Thank you and keep up the great work! 👍 Kind regards from the UK

Wow, those are beautiful cutters, all of them!

Beautiful footage. Both relaxing and exhilarating at the same time. That's a weird combination. My heart beat went up as did my mood, but my breathing relaxed as did my muscle tention. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video. P.S. and thanks to KZbin for the suggestion of a video on this channel. I've been watching from the oldest trying to watch all of them from the beginning. SUB'd yesterday and bindging...

Great footage. I sailed with a old dutch ship as a deckhand on a flat bottum boat with side boards, but this is another level. Thanks for the upload.

And a pirate crew!.

Yeah, I need a boat I can opperate by myself while the wife just rides along, she won't help, I know that for sure. So nothing this big, though that would be amazing. Something live aboard, that a single person could opperate, with power back-up, that could traverse the oceans, would be ideal. Then, I'd just have to learn how to sail, before taking off for far away lands.

What pretty sailing ships! I have seen Schooners that are larger, but those just yell fun!

Just like a steam engine conveys it's strength and beauty stationary or in motion so do these magnificent craft. Any amount of this KZbin just to pacify the soul.

The gaff rigged schooners are beautiful! Thanks for filming this race.

A schooner has two (or more,) masts, the forward mast shorter or equal in length to the after mast.

These are cutters, not schooners.

Fascinating and wonderful, but what happened off the coast between start and destination? Nothing?
@SmithysBoatshed3 жыл бұрын
Pretty much. Light breezes, fleet separated, nothing much happened.

Those upper sheets could do with a snatch block of sorts.

They have them, just not the design you are probably used to.

Do these pilot cutters have winches like modern sailboats
@SmithysBoatshed4 жыл бұрын
Most do not.
@alastair810334 жыл бұрын
All Armstrong winches I think
@q.e.d.91124 жыл бұрын
They have multi-part block and tackle on most of their running rigging. ETA they have also have a windlass up forward for raising anchor.
@jimjonrs39324 жыл бұрын
Dual Popeye winches.
@bungfupanda8936 Жыл бұрын
Mostly Handraulic winches, tried and true design that's been in use for millenia. 😉

Also... "Never again am I going to make a slippery boat for someone else..." alrighty then, get better deck shoes, or some form of texture in the deck finish?

He is remaking an exquisite piece of furniture at the same time. I have never seen such good boatbuilding skills.

Wow, the editing here nearly drove me away, with constant cuts back and forth. Was this done for the concentration-of-a-goldfish generation?.......because I don't reckon too many of them are into pilot cutters.
@SmithysBoatshed3 жыл бұрын
Yes I was trying to follow modern trends, and I agree it was a mistake. Cheers.

Nonsensical editing, cutting back and forth was annoying I stopped watching 2.43 .

Then you missed the best part, when they finally stayed with the sailing on open waters.
@dugldoo3 жыл бұрын
The editing is not creative, innovative or exciting, just distracting and annoying. The event deserved better.
