In the early 1980's, I flew from Newark to Oakland on a World Airways DC-10. This was before tight airline security, so when I asked to see the flight deck, the attendant checked with the captain, who said "sure." As I entered the cockpit area, there was an attractive flight attendant sitting on the first officer's lap, in what I can only call a compromising position. The captain was in the left seat, and unfazed, he gave me the one minute tour, as if nothing was out of the ordinary. World Airways is long gone, and so is the DC-10, but my memories of that flight are indelible.

@Grey Jay. That is cool back in the day, but now ever since post-9/11 a rule made mandatory by at least the FAA states that no non-members of the flight crew may be permitted into the cockpit, (at least during the flight excluding after landing). That was pretty sad because I missed the time point when we could ask the flight attendant for a visit to the flight deck, I was born, ironically, just in the beginning of the next year after 9/11/2001 (close enough, right?), so naturally I for one NEVER got to see the flight deck. I know the FAA and other organizations out there only wanted safety to be the number one priority, I do have to side with them on the fact that any possible potential threats (including allowing passengers to visit the cockpit) should not be underestimated, therefore it is only for the safety of everyone both on ground and onboard that we should all compromise with this novel restriction. However, I could still say I DID actually want to have a look at the flight deck! I got close though-by searching for images on the web, lol! (Maybe that IS actually the closest I can ever get)
@bkembley4 жыл бұрын
@StringerNews1 I did the same thing. About three years ago I flew to a conference and it was the first time I had flown in more than 10 years. I'm a bit of an aviation nerd (used to work as a lineman at an FBO and my wife hates watching movies with planes in them with me because I'm Mr. Reality-Buzzkill). Before going to the airport, I had downloaded a list of every plane the carrier owned with tail numbers and everything. At the gate, I was trying to read the tail number but the plane was parked just wrong and I couldn't see it. A member of the flight crew was standing at the gate so I decided to ask him. I got the, "never been asked that before," look and statement but we struck up a nice conversation. I had a layover in Baltimore where I was one of only three passengers staying on the plane for the next leg. I sat in the captain's seat nearly the entire layover talking to the first officer while he did a bunch of checklist stuff. I even have the pictures to prove it. Reclaiming what the terrorists took can be done--it just has to be done with tact--because on the inside, we're all overgrown kids!

I remember years ago flying a US Navy P-3 out past the Aleutian Islands at low level. It was COLD outside, damn cold so we were very uncomfortable inside the aircraft. After whining to the flight engineer one too many times to warm us up our engineer decided to run down the aircraft, in his underwear and flight boots. He was exclaiming how nice and comfy the temp was to him. We were laughing so hard it warmed us up enough to get back to our mission. Thanks and RIP Stan.

My dad's cousin told me a story about how his neighbour owned a floatplane before he learned to fly it. He would take it out on the lake, and would spend his time bringing it to full power, lifting off the water, and reducing power and putting it back on the lake. Then it was time for him to take actual flight lessons, so he had the bright idea to fly it into town. At one point, he hit some turbulence which scared the heck out of him, but he made it.

Back in the 90s, I worked for a jet charter operation in Dallas, first in Flight Ops, later in Crew Scheduling. I went out with pilots now and then which is where I heard this story. We had a young male FE, maybe mid-20s, and really a nice guy. However, when he was on the road and his crew went out for drinks on a long layover, he'd get sloshed. And when e was in that condition, he liked to shed his clothes if dared. The story was that they were in Atlantic City on a layover at a small, dark club. Sometime during the evening, a bet was made that he wouldn't climb up on their table and do a strip tease. So he did, getting down to his birthday suit before they had to get him out of the club. Other than that, just the cutest, sweetest guy you could meet.Never got a chance to go out drinking with him unfortunately.

13:37 Someone left my US connection flight by air ambulance, as that delayed the flight slightly they held up an overseas flight (so as not to pay for a hotel room for a week until the next flight.) The flight crew, annoyed at this delay, grabbed my carry-on bag from X-ray while I was still going through the international TSA screening. They ran to the plane with my bag. I gave chase... ASAP. A Stewardess claimed that the over head was full near my seat; so the flight crew took my bag to the crew luggage area. I objected, I wanted to put my Rolex back on for the flight. Too late, take your seat the plane is pushing back. Come find me, you'll get your bag back later at your final destination. (I'll call the police if you don't give my bag there.) Flight passed over Hawaii, stopped for fuel in Samoa. For safety everyone was ordered off the plane ✈️. When we got to my destination I looked for that Stewardess and discovered a totally different new crew. They changed crews in Samoa while refueling! The original crew had stollen my bag! They were likely drawing lots to see who got my Rolex etc. While chilling W 🍹 in Samoa. 🤔Was this the same crew that got robbed, @13:57 looking for a new watch? The airline said because it wasn't a checked bag (we don't give a rip) contact your travel insurance. 14:15 Travel insurance, You CLAIM you lost your carry-on bag with a Rolex ⌚... Unh-unh, No way! We don't cover that contact the airline. 14:15 Catch 22 🤬! Was that an isolated incident because of the foreign flight crew or a regular scam on passengers?!? The return flight to 🇺🇸 was the last commercial flight I EVER took. Fool me once, shame on you, not going to fool me twice. I started flight training soon after.

Enjoyed the ACARS transitions! I only ever get to see the dispatcher side (much easier to use, but not as cool looking).
