David, I want to just let you know that you have now become one of my go to pen reviewers because you really try and present things your own perspective. But please do be careful with over flexing the nib! That was SCARY. The softness of the nib really comes to fore in writing Chinese or Japanese. Because these characters are not written in a single continuous moving line but a series of short starts and stops, the bounciness gives the character some of it's unique look especially when you shift directions based on the specific character. I find it very hard to use this pen for the expressive flex nib writing that so many of us crave in western writing.

I own an old iteration that I bought second hand in a fountain pen buy and sell group with a fine nib. It's a super light pen that I'd recognize blindfolded because of its patterned body and cap. It's a nice writer.

I know this is an older review but was wondering if you had any thoughts on this in comparison to the Pilot 912. I know the 912 has a broad selection of nib choices and the Justus 95 has the adjuster but other than that they seem awfully similar. I'm debating which one to add to my collection next.

The Justus has a different, grooved exterior, so it has a bit of a different look. While the concept of the adjustable nib is neat, I don't find myself using the feature. I typically just leave it where it is. With the 912, you're going to be able to get a wide variety of nib options. While they are both nice, I would personally lean toward the 912.

A very interesting pen. I've only ever seen one other nib with a bridge on it before with a Chinese fude nib to prevent burping.

I have one in fine point and it writes like a medium point and I hardly ever use this pen because it's to big for my hand I have small hands and I like small pens they're comfortable for me

Just picking up a used one today. I love your handwriting David. It's not very good, but I really just like looking at it. Very unique and quite legible. I hate your capital S though. I initially thought "is this worth 160?" when offered. Then I went home and thought about it and realized i was an idiot for passing. Thankfully he still had it. I didn't see just how huge it was until I held it. And the striped barrel feels Really nice. I'm currently waiting for the company that sells 823's with the monster #15 falcon nib to restock in November. I'm first in line for that pen. Going to get one of the custom red ebonite feeds for it too.

The difference in stiffness seems to be about the feel in the hand... Ease of line variation seems to take quite a bit of effort... Would this be correct?

Shub99 yes...it is more about the feeling in your hand rather than the ink on the paper.

Unpopular opinion: the Pilot Justus 95 (at least the new Justus 95) is a waste of money if you’re looking for variable line width, or even variable nib feeling/softness. The best case scenario is that the nib *feels* a little softer in the S position-just ever so slightly. Aside from that, there is zero discernible difference between the hardest and softest settings in terms of how far apart the tines spread or how much ink it lays down. Don’t believe me? You can repeat the same test I did. I have around five or six vintage, adjustable Wahl Doric nibs, and had a Justus 95 for several years. At one point I got curious as to whether the variability on the Justus 95 was anywhere near the variability on the Doric, because in the hand it’s certainly felt nowhere close. So what I ended up doing was getting some carbon paper and sandwiching it in between two regular sheets of copy paper. Then I did a test with each of the adjustable names, from hardest to softest, testing mainly whether the slider affected the nibs ability to spread its tines. The top sheet showed the results on the page, written with ink. The bottom page showed dark lines representing where the two tines had come into contact with the page. The Dorics all performed as you would expect, and the sliders had a huge effect on both the feel of writing with the nib and the final results on the page. But the Justus 95 looked exactly the same regardless of slider position. Feels the same, acts the same, looks the same. Now, I’ve heard people say the vintage Justus offered better variability, or at the very least more line variation, but that’s just Internet chatter to me since I’ve not tried a vintage model. Not trying to hurricane on your parade, just sharing my experiences with this pen.

Hey , can you tell me your Favorite piston style pen , that you can see the ink ? I have the TWSBI 580 , Love it , thanks for that advice, is there more ? Any with a gold nib ? Thanks. Bob C.

It's not a piston filler, but my favorite pen where you can see the ink sloshing around is the Franklin Christoph Model 66. A very nice pen to eyedropper. It's available with a gold nib, but the FC steel nibs are very good as well.
