Excellent review and presentation. The Soft Gold Nib is significantly better than the steel versions and I find a smoother feel to it. I have a Soft Fine Nib in my Pilot 743 and it worked consistently and springs back with Mary a problem. Pilot is one of the best manufacturers on the planet. In comparison I obtained Platinum's version in their 3776 model. While it is a smoother nib and the nib does bounce, there is nowhere near the same amount of line variation.

Thanks - it is surprisingly smooth as a straightforward EF, and would be an excellent pen even without the flex.

I'm going to getting a metal version as it's the only one you can fit with a Con 70 converter. You can't fit one with the resin versions. In Australia the FA nib isn't available with the Falcon unfortunately.

That's correct. I'm thinking of doing the same. Con 70 holds almost double the amount of ink, therefore metal Falcon is the no-brainer purchase

Thanks for the review. I am waiting for my pilot falcon with SEF nib to arrive. I am worried about the nib: is it scratchy or unpleasant? Or is it smooth for a SEF nib?

Hi, I'm guessing tat you have bought from Japan, as the SEF is not available in the UK. The EF is smooth for an EF, in my view, so the SEF is probably smooth - for an SEF. The finer the nib, the less contact there is with the paper so it is unlikely to "glide" over the paper and the more likely to snag on any imperfections i the paper.

Thanks for the reply. Actually, I ordered it from Goulet Pens in the US. I am from the Northern part of Iraq (Kurdistan). So, I am still waiting for my order to arrive on Sunday. I hope it won't be scratchy. I'm happy you find it relatively smooth.

@@yleexot Sorry for the late reply. Actually, the SEF nib is not scratchy, and it is relatively smooth for an extra-fine nib. But, if you are used to medium nibs or broader nibs, you might find the SEF nib a little bit unpleasant for long writing session because it has feedback. As for me, I like the SEF nib because I use it to annotate books on the margins. I also ordered the SF nib. The SF is smooth and fine. Maybe the artists find the SEF nib excellent. For me, I like the SF nib better. This doesn't mean that the SEF nib is not pleasant to write with. I just prefer SF because I want to see more ink on the paper.

How can you explain that Hype about flex nib? i do not get it

Varying the line width of your handwriting is the best way to add character to it. This can be achieved by a nib cut to give variation between horizontal and vertical strokes - stub or italic, or one that will "flex" as you vary the pressure on the nib - a "flex" nib. The tines part as the pressure is applied, giving a broader line, and spring back when it is released, giving a fines line. It is a skill that can only be learned with practice.
