your rite its an air flow problem which is caused by some sort of safety device called TRD or FVIR (Flammable Vapor Ignition Resistant )which looks like a fuse,once the water heater goes above a certain temperature it blows which in turn releases what is called a damper rod,that damper rod when pushed down opens the air flow which is what you see outside the heater(all the little holds around the heater)the fuse holds the damper rod down,once it blows it releases the damper rod which cuts the air flow.

Thank you so much for your great video , brother. Finally the trick you mentioned in your video worked for me too. I was in a plan to replace the whole water heater which cost about $1200 at this time when I need money for buying the back to school supplies including expensive shoes and clothing for 2 kids of this fashionable and chosy Era. I made an attempt of do or die action and started to open and did the cleaning by dusting the underneath of the tank and the burner assembly gently hitting, tapping and vacuuming the area and put the assembly back and turning the pointer to the pilot position hold it for atleast 10-15 seconds and pressed the ignitor button 5-8 times until the pilot light started blinking for 3 times, then turned the controller switch pointing to very hot for atleast 10 seconds , the burner lighted up waited for few seconds and turned the controller switch pointing to hot position and waited for 5 minutes to make the pilot light and the flame stay on and it did. I could feel the difference in the temperature of the water just after 5-7 minutes . It finally worked. Once again thank you so much for making this video. You saved my extra expenses for now. I am so glad that I made it and saved money. I hope I can help my friends and families next.

After changing again today, flame snuffed out. Watched your video, then vacuumed on top and under vent on the floor of the ignition chamber. While vacuuming, I managed to knock a clip loose, then tore open two vacuum bags before using a stick magnet and retrieving the clip from a hard-to-see place under the unit but over the stand! Hot water delayed by only 4 hours instead of 24. Thanks again! BTW, the Whirlpool manual describes the air supply/intake/screen a 'FLAME-TRAP'.

Water Heater Flame Arrestor To take everything right out and test it, that's good troubleshooting. You were right that it was flame just wasn't getting air. Your solution showed that, but I'd be nervous about breaking that out. There's a great video I just happened to have seen yesterday : Water Heater Pilot Won't Stay Lit - Water Heater Flame Arrestor. I'd never heard of those but they need to be cleaned regularly. You don't want to take that window out because you lose the protection of the flame arrestor. VERY GOOD SIMPLE EXPLANATION ON HOW TO FIX A SIMPLE PROBLEM
@davidconrad22376 жыл бұрын
Honestly, you could help people out more by explaining that they need to first ensure proper air flow, but then to check the safety device, as others have mentioned, which shuts off the air flow completely in case of overheating. That was my problem. I first cleared the air flow obstruction, then rigged the safety device with a bolt to hold the air flow open. Yes, I do plan on replacing it with the proper component (which is oddly expensive), and no, I would not recommend this as a long-term fix. But I think it's a much better solution than running your heater with the service panel and pilot window removed, as others seem to be doing, following your lead . . .
@miltownusa4 жыл бұрын
Then why is it different to remove the window and have an opening compared to the older models where you went in with a match to light it? There weren't windows on those models.

I had the same thing happening on my 12 year old kenmore tank. The thermocouple was fine, but the pilot would go out while the burner was heating the water. I found the solution on another persons channel. There is another air filter under the burner assembly that got clogged. I macguyvered a 90 degree blowout tip for my compressor as well as one for vacuum and proceeded to blow out and vacuum this flame proof filter above and below. Put all back together. No more pilot flameouts.

All water heaters now have a federally mandated safety device to shut down the water heater if it gets too hot. Simply, there are two doors held up by a small glass vial (one type) on the sides where the perforated air inlets are. Overheating causes the vials to burst and the doors come down, starving the flame. If you look thru your window while relighting, you will see the flame quickly go from blue to white and the flames get long and wavering, then disappear. Oxygen starvation. You can get a free kit to repair it, taking about 10 days before mfr. will ship. This then requires draining, disconnecting and lying the unit on its side and repairing from bottom. No plumber will do this because it is so labor intensive. It is far more cost effective to buy another unit. Plumbers hate this as much as you because homeowners get frustrated and upset with the plumber. Thats me. Nice idea opening the front, although I would not do this because unit is now operating outside of parameters. I have also gone out on calls where doors are up but glass window is removed/broken; air draw through window sometimes blows out pilot. You sir are one tenacious man.

@100vg Жыл бұрын
It looks like your pilot light is extremely high. If you have a Pilot Adjust screw, screwing "In" is to lower the flame and "Out" is higher, at least that's how it works on my AC/Furnace. Mine has a larger screw with a long shaft that's only threaded at the top and that's covers and protects the adjust screw inside, so that has to come out to adjust the pilot flame, then reinstall it. Check the manual to see if you have a Pilot Adjust screw, knob or control. You can save a bit on your gas bill and maybe prevent the high flame from damaging something else. The manual might tell you the proper height. Good luck!
@nabeel123ful4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your video! Similar things happen to my water heater and I am doubting whether mine is lack of air flow as well. Now I have some evidence that it might be more than just a bad air filter as with the chamber open to air, the pilot light goes out as soon as I release the gas reset button. So, I would like to ask what exactly you observed when the whole ignition set was in the combustion chamber. Did the pilot light gradually die out after you release the pilot button, a sign to use up the air in the chamber, or was it put out as soon as the button was released?

I would like to add some information here. The cause for the issue - the pilot light cannot stay is case by case. some is due to not enough air, even there is the filter on the bottom that needs to be cleaned. some may be due to the thermopiles, some may be due to the circuit board within the control valve, some might be due to the control valve - that is for my case. I replaced the control valve, my water heater works again. ( I did have tried to replace the thermopiles, didn't work, swapped the circuit board from the new control valve, didn't work)
