hi guys !! for context: each episode will be recorded in some kind of online game, not necessarily just roblox. although we do love roblox. we have no theme song or channel art or anything yet, and it'll just be on youtube for now. we will figure all that out in the next couple episodes. but for now enjoy whatever this is. 🫶

Pro tip for under-eaters like us: just smash 100 g of cheese before bed with 5 or 6 crackers & a glass of water. Easy 500 calories, no sugar, cheese improves sleep (contrary to nightmares myth) and being full improves sleep (no waking due to hunger). Moreover, it forces you to exercise via the guilt of eating 700 g of cheese a week. If you don't jog & lift, you'll die from the fat intake.

When I was a kid I also believed that stunts like car crashes and people falling off of cliffs were done by old people who didn't want to live anymore and wanted their final moments to be captured artistically. I wonder how many other kids thought the same thing. Maybe this is a new 'the talk' parents need to be having with their kids.

57:01 Something I really like about the 80s and 90s is that kids movies weren't all comedies. They all have jokes and funny moments, but that's not always the focus. Jumanji was much more of an action adventure than it was anything else, and even had its own moments that could be considered horror. Kids experience a full spectrum of emotion, same as anyone, and I feel like we used to utilize that in kids media more often back then than we do today.

The food discussion was the type of relatable that helps me feel a lot better about my life and who i am. Thank you for that. Mem halfway convinced me to drop out of grad school, but im almost certainly defending this year so that is not in the cards.

I totally agree on the price of eggs. When a couple eggs is nearly a meal and it costs like .33 cents an egg on the expensive side, is this really a problem? And holy crap, it’s mind blowing to consider how many chickens we have enslaved to make that economically viable.

Love this podcast! Gotta say though, I couldn't possibly relate less to your chat about food. Cooking is absolute me time! On the veg front, just roast a big tray of veg, blitz it in a food processor, mix it with a bit of yoghurt, and jar it as pasta sauce. Edit: also, 80s dark fantasy, recommend the 1986 Finnish film Lumikuningatar (Snow Queen). This and Dark Crystal were two of my favourite films as a kid, even though they both terrified me!

As a longtime Star Trek fan (my favorites are the 90s series), I tried the Orville despite having the same doubts that you did, Mem, and couldn't get through the first episode. It was painfully unfunny, and pretty much what I expected. And like you said, there's so much actual Star Trek content, and once you get through it all, you'll just want to go back and rewatch DS9 anyway :D

The movie with the guy getting his fingers cut off is the first Darkman movie, its the first thing that happens in the movie, and its weird that we have the SAME memory even though I'm like 38 - I think its a PG-13 movie thats a superhero movie, but honestly the cigar thing freaked me out so much that I haven't gone back and watched it.

49:13 I got a DVD from the public library: a French black & white film noir, called Le Yeux Sans Visage ("eyes without a face"), and it had a bonus feature ("blood of the beast"), which was a real, uncensored look inside slaughter houses - actual live animals being put down and processed. The look of fear on the face of a calf, when it saw what was happening to the others, before it was bled out in turn, scarred my young city-boy mind, and turned me vegetarian. I still remember it clearly, about 20 years later. Based on saying "Tofurkey" I'm guessing Mem is vegetarian btw 😊
