Ferry Flight Germany to Norway | Grumman Tiger

We’re back with another ferry flight video!
Last week Maurits and I delivered a beautiful American General AG5B Tiger to her new owner in Norway.
This German registered aircraft was based in Worms Germany, and we ferried her up North through Denmark, along the coast of Sweden, and over the breathtaking Fjords. An unforgettable journey to say the least!

I have owned a Grumman Tiger for more than a decade. I have flown it all over the US and Bahamas... Tahoe, Grand Canyon, Rockies, Death Valley, Texas, New Orleans, Big Sir, San Diego, Moab, SF... welcome to the best-kept secret in General Aviation. Two small recommendations for next time... take note of the speed restriction in the POH for canopy open ops and note that the canopy is placarded with a mark (near your elbow) for how far you can push it back in flight. It's easy to bend those rules. Lastly thanks for not editing the go-around- this bird likes to be flown at very specific speeds on approach. We all made that mistake when we transitioned from other bulky spam cans.

Thank you so much for pointing this out Steve! I really enjoyed flying the Tiger too, and in hindsight I wish I was more vigilant on the max opening placard. I must say, when I read the POH I was aware of the max operating speed with canopy open, and decided not to fly over 95 kts in that situation (for safety precautions). Since the POH that I read didn't have a specific textual reference to the max opening distance, I unfortunately overlooked the placard diagram. This was my honest mistake, and when I read that I could fly open canopy, I was beyond excited! Fellow pilots recommended me to fly open canopy for the "real" Grumman experience, but I didn't think to ask them if there was a max. opening distance. I'm truly thankful that everything went okay, and that no damage was incurred. I've learnt from this mistake, and hope I can pass on this information to future pilots on the Tiger. Thanks again for your kind words!

I was thinking the same thing about the canopy restrictions. Used to fly Berl Brechner's Grumman Cheetah all over the eastern US when was a staff editor at Flying Magazine, 150 hp version of same airplane. Agree with all previous similar comments esp the one by guy in his mid 70s how much I enjoy these videos and pilot Bambi's competence and joie de vivre et de l'air et de vol. Enchanting!

US Tiger owner here. Great to watch you making this trip. Tigers are a lot of fun to fly and not your average fixed gear single. You did great for never having flown one before. Over here you can't get insurance until you have 10 to 20 hours flying one with a cfi with Grumman time. Your first landing immediately got my attention, glad you didn't hesitate making the go around. You learned the airplane quick! Sometime try a no flap landing, then speed control is even more critical, and fun!

I learned to fly in a Grumman Yankee. They are very fast for the power. This is because of the skin not having any rivets. They very low drag and have better fuel economy. It was not surprising you came in a little hot the first time. Love your videos.

Nice trip. Grummans are great. Regarding the POH: the arrow you see above your left arm at 9:12 (just below the rail) indicates the maximum position for an open canopy in flight.

Pilot Bambi, you have no worries. I’m a former Tiger owner and it’s well know, nothing bad will come with the canopy wide open. Just be sure to contain loose articles in the cockpit...Enjoy your videos.

Looks like ya'll had a lot of fun. In the late 70's a friend had one of those and would stop in once in awhile, one time he took me up and did aerobatics at night with the canopy back, I'll never forget the stars and ground lights spinning. He also showed me that it is possible to slip it from side to side to eat up altitude right over the end of the runway from thousands of feet and land!

Fun video and epic flying locations. I own an AG5B Tiger, very similar to that one. Don't fly with the canopy all the way back, especially for take off. Bad things can happen. There's a placard on the rail to indicate how far back you can go. It's about 25 cm.
