I bought a Holy Stone drone and now think it might have been a mistake. I registered it, did the TRUST test, have flown it from my home which is a challenge with trees, fences, bushes, etc. The problem are restrictions everywhere. We have a natural park within a half mile but you can't fly there, schools with large open areas and generally no one around, can't fly there. In order to join a group of RC plane operators it will cost me $150 per year and I must schedule my flights well in advance , like 2 weeks is recommended. So far in doing the research I have found no place reasonably close to fly. This is not what I had in mind. This is not "fun" or recreational.

Just bought a DJI MIni 2 which technically is below the 250g rec usage limit, but my county requires registration regardless, so register I did. The big challenge I am now finding is a place to fly given restrictions beyond just FAA rules. I thought I knew a place, drove down there to find a US Corp of Engineers no drones sign. Hope I didn't just buy a $600 brick.

I am 81 years old and started flying model airplanes in the late 40s. I have flown R/C pattern competition, control line, and free flight. When the government started regulating the model hobby I hung up all my planes rather than have the FAA come to my house to confiscate all my planes because someone else screwed up. Also, if they cannot tell the difference between free flight, and control line as not being drones, they do not know the difference between cars and airplanes. But they love to control people and could care less they have destroyed a great hobby. I am retired and on a fixed income and have no provisions for 10,000 dollar fines. It makes no sense to me. I have no desire to go to court to let two lawyers decide my fate. Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. No matter what you do with your planes they will find a way to destroy your life. Not worth it. A control line airplane is no different than a kite never getting over 70' from the flyer.

I'm not far behind in age. Within a few months after I bought my first quadcopter, the FAA announced that drones were to be regulated. Recent events bring to mind the question I had after that announcement. Rephrased for the context of current events, "Why are there so many rules for toys when a kid who just turned 18 can buy two assault rifles in Texas, and shoot up a school?" Where are the training, testing, licensing, requesting to use, certifying compliance with organizations, etc. for using firearms?

Drones do not kill people. People kill people. Guns do not kill people. People kill people. I have been flying model airplanes since I was 6 years old. Never once has one of them killed anyone. I have owned a few guns. Never once have any of my guns killed anyone. The gun did not go in that school by itself. He could have done the same damage with a pipe bomb. Government agencies love to make it look like they have solved the problem. But they never do. Chicago has the highest gun laws in the country, and 43 people were shot and killed over the weekend in Chicago. Where I live everyone has guns. There were no people killed over the weekend by guns. If you take the guns from law abiding people only killers will have guns. Cars do not kill people. People in cars kill people. Gods laws never stopped people from breaking them. We live in a fallen world. It will only get worse.

Thank you Greg for your awesome class. As I posted today on your class, I got an 80% today on my exam. This test is no joke. Most of my questions were on airspace and sectional charts. Most of my questions were not from any practice exam I have ever taken. This by far was the hardest exam I have ever taken in my life. I really thought I failed it when I walked out of the test room today. When he told me I got an 80%, I was shaking. I could not believe it. Unfortunately, the necessity to pass a test, register my drone, put a tail number on it, have an observer for FPV, and eventually a remote ID transmitter and be restricted to flying in a football field size bubble....seems ridiculous and is keeping me from buying any new drones at this point.

So I bought a new DJI FPV drone thinking that I didn't have to worry about rules only to find out that now FPV is regulated with rules and requirements. This is a great list! While I plan on mostly flying recreationally, I want the added training, understanding, and situational awareness that comes with being Part 107 certified along with the opportunity to make extra money part-time on the side. The location I went to, in addition to the reference booklet, sheet of paper, and a pair of pencils they also gave me a clear sheet of laminate with a dry erase marker and eraser. That helped greatly with the few questions dealing with looking xSM away from a location to get an exact fix on what they were asking for. Between watching 2-3 in-depth videos (1-3 hours long each) and a couple flashcard style apps on my phone is what I used to study.

This is exactly the video i was looking for. Explaining the differences between part 107 vs 44809 you also guided me to a great app showing restricted air spaces in my area. That air control app is also a great way to get in touch with the correct contacts if you wish to fly in those air spaces. I'm not far between 2 airports and within a short drive and fly from Disney.

Hi Greg! I'm one of your graduate students from your 107 Certification class. I passed on my first try at 87%. Thank you for the awesome guidance! I have just ordered a Mavic 3 Classic and I'm upgrading from my Mini 2 to the Mini 3 Pro. I'm happy using DJI products but I live in Florida, and listening to your latest newscast I found out about FL banning Chinese-made drones for their local gov't agencies. I see the DOD has done the same so long term I've began to wonder if DJI is a good investment. I looked at the brand options in the FL whitelist and only the Skydio 2+ line is apt for consumers. And they are certainly NOT DJI in many aspects. Now, at first I thought, maybe I should trade my Mavic 3 Classic for the Skydio, but I'm not ready to part with my new DJI drones. So, I've been thinking that perhaps the ban won't reach private citizens doing on-demand work for local businesses just yet. Maybe in the future I'll add the Skydio 2+ to my collection; perhaps when they have a more portable drone (where the legs fold) with a better-quality remote (the current remote feels like a cheap toy). As a Florida resident I've come to this conclusion after hearing your news update and doing some research. I am going to hold on to my DJI drones until they are banned, and hopefully by then Skydio has come up with drones that are closer to the DJI quality. What would you do if you were in my shoes? I'm not ready to give up on flying drones for commercial purposes just yet.

China has already created their own style of NSA for world surveillance and Congress really wants to ban specific imports but cannot do this without interfering with the American free market. Computers have been turned into data mining tools for government and business and who knows if all that flight data from the DJI is kept in a database on Chinese government servers. We already know now what Snowden leaked back in 2012.

So happy I found this channel. I am travelling to US this summer, and it looks so easy to fly there. Here in Spain, for starters, if you take pictures in urban environment it is already a "professional" flight, no matter the intend, and you must notify to the equivalent to Homeland Security before 10 labour days. I got toy drone some years ago to play with. After a couple months I decided to get one with a better camera (720 mp) but still cheap so I could really learn so I could get a really decent one for photography. Then the Rules started to kick in. Ok, I thought, not a big deal. And then pretty much every single place I would like to take a drone for vacation photos (parks) either banned them or made an expensive permit necessary. As a result that second drone has never been used more than a test flight in my living room. I am totally digusted with the whole bureaucracy.

Flying for pure pleasure and enjoyment, drone is under 249 grams, no money involved at all, as long as you're following basic guidlines '5 miles from any airport, under regulated altitude, away from people, buildings ect. don't need a license, permit or registration required by law, joining the AMA is a good idea but the rest is optional.

I fly for fun, have had drones from the beginning. but getting afraid to fly because of all the rules, that seem to keep changing. I only fly around my house and yard, sometimes around the neighbor's big field, just for fun,and I can't fly it by looking just at the screen, I look at the drone at all times when it is in the air, if I can hear an aircraft, I will land until it is gone,. THere is an airport a few miles away but the only contact is when you are aproching the airport you click a certian radio channel to turn on the runway lights at night, no people to talk to. All my drones have their registration numbers on them. Just a note, I am 75 years old now and I used to have a commercial Helicopter license and it wasn,t as complicated as trying to fly one of these toy plastic drones.

First, Great Explanation. One thing that I didn't hear you mention is that National Parks are No Fly Zones; these are listed on AirMap, but every National Park employee knows that it is illegal to fly drones over any National Park and they WILL call the authorities. Next, the Visual Line of Sight thing is a bit challenging for FPV even with a spotter. So, while FPV is considered acceptable, in reality, the LOS stipulation is an excessive limitation. Consider just flying a small 2.5 inch quad FPV. From the pilot's perspective, it is near impossible to determine if you have exceeded VLOS. From a spotter perspective, it is near impossible to track or even tell if you can see it or not. The truth is that the Line Of Sight stipulation just kills FPV from the Recreational Exemption. So sad. On a different note, every child that wants to fly a tiny whoop quad is going to have to get a TRUST certificate. This is just absurd. Any way you want to look at it, the FAA is going to effectively kill FPV as a recreational hobby (or at the very least make a lot of people outlaws). Furthermore...DroneZone...yeah right. Where are they? How many people have one close? Again, absurd. This whole exemption is an effort to appear to be appeasing while in fact, just restricting the recreational FPV pilot.

Yeah, no matter how a person wants to look at it, the faa is screwing the industry as well as the citizens. They would be tickled if they ended the hobby. The fact is, gov decided to start regulating when civilians flew one over a police baracade. They had a zone where they took citizens they were detaining during a protest. Cops let no civilians including press in that area. A journalist mounted a gopro on his friends quadcopter & flew it over to record police wrongdoings. The 2nd event was when a couple young men flew a drone over a large corporate hog farm. They filmed the farms illegally dumping waste into a waterway. It had absolutely nothing to do with safety. No personal drone had ever damaged a manned flight. If gov were concerned about our safety & well being , they woulda went after the hog farm with everything they had. They were more concerned with busting the drone operators vs the corporate hog farm that was contaminating the waterway. Gov used that propoganda & made up a narrative that peeps were flying drones to peep on women's privacy. It was all propoganda. They can't have citizens filming their dirty deeds. They reserve that right to do unto us. I'm all for drone safety & common sense rules. What the fda is doing is about control & power. Y'all can think what you want, idc if u disagree. Everyone has the right to be wrong.

Thanks for the info. It's unfortunate that the FAA has the remote location is included in the Remote ID, it's going to scare a lot of people from the hobby or be limited by a drone that weighs less than 250 grams. I got into this hobby for aerial photography/videography, and I won't register a drone because I don't want my location broadcast to everyone. I was fine with registration until I found out that instead of my info being broadcast to the FAA or authorities in case something goes wrong but I hate the fact that they broadcast your info & location to the public. This will put a major hurt on the hobby. Do I still have to register my drone if it's under 250 grams? I may be wrong

I’m also a recreational flyer with a drone under 250 grams. (Mini 2) I’ve been researching this and NO, if your drone weighs 250 or less you do not have to register with the FAA. However, I noticed my DJI drone has “remote identification” listed in one of the set-up menus. What this does is unclear but I don’t think it has broadcast capability.

None of it matters if the FAA doesn’t enforce these rules to begin with. If you call your local FAA office and speak to an officer, they will tell you that they are only interested in busting people near airports, not anyone flying commercially without a P107 certificate.

Basically this is true. The FAA doesn't have inspectors at every airport, with binoculars and video cameras as well as remote ID tracking equipment. Fly around an airport or in controlled airspace and things may be different. Just stay away from airports and you're pretty much free to do whatever.

Technically yes, but really, how many FAA inspectors are out there? Not many. And are they walking around with a calibrated scale to weigh drones? They're only going to actually be interested in you if you're being dumb enough to fly around an airport or heliport.

Just buy the new mini 3 from DJI and don't get paid and you don't need a license. If you're getting paid, get your 107, otherwise, no point. The new software will also tell you youre in controlled airspace.

43 years ATC experience. Started flying RC planes in 2018 before any of this but I knew it was coming. Had a good friend from the old facility on the committees which set the rules up in the early days of UAV’s. Interesting to see how it’s developed in the last several years. I took a break in 2020 and I’m getting back into flying after the move and need to get all my ducks in order. I live right under the outer edge of Class D airspace of the facility I currently contract for. How convenient 😊 Anyway, good video explaining the different requirements. 👍

This has been the single most helpful video for how to get started. I know I want to invest in a drone, and didn't want the "variables' to discourage me. I know I want to be in compliance and I also want to pilot my drone at longer distances, so I am committed to getting my Part 109 licence and applying for the waiver to take my drone out further. I think I will be taking the "guaranteed" training program you provide so I can learn everything I need for my Part 109 test. I don't think I will be creating a drone "business" but I do want to post videos on KZbin for hobby/business so I want to have more privileges beyond flying for enjoyment. After all, why invest in a long range drone if I can't take it out of my yard?

It asks for the manufacturer and model. There's a ton of components in a build most from different manufacturers. Do I use the frame model and manufacturer? If I destroyed one can it be removed? Sorry to be asking but, I was just informed that flying my drone over Lake Piru dam was a federal offense. Although I wasn't actually flying OVER the dam itself and was at least 400 feet from the dam, I wasn't aware that (some, all) dams have federal restrictions regarding drone flight.

FAA needs to quit criminalizing FPV. For drones, it's safer to fly FPV than it is LOS. Because LOS doesn't let you know which way the drone will go - like it does for an airplane - which has a profile that changes as the plane rotates in the air. Rotate a drone LOS - and you learn nothing. IOW - flying a drone LOS, defeats rule #9 - always fly safely.

@@PilotInstitute Between our RC Club and the tower I work at, we have a LOA on file and have direct communication with the ATC facility for special events. Couple of our ATC guys are drone pilots with the local CBO. Others that are not part of our club, Part 107 rules apply and therefore LANCE is good for the recreational drone flyer. No one shall be flying within the ATA/Controlled Airspace without specific approval following the LANCE procedure. I'm a recreational drone/RC aircraft pilot and do have the FAA number attached to all my aircraft. I make my own decals for that purpose. Have fun, but most of all be safe. Piper Colt owner PA-22-108. Gladly would like input from you guys on anything not covered but seems as though you are doing a great job. Thanks.

No it's not. Airspace is a very controlled thing and drones can very easily invade people's privacy or spy on people or situations that might be related to national security, LE, politics or the military. If you get a drone under 250g, all you have to do is take the simple trust exam and that's it. It's the easiest thing to do and you do it I've and you're done and can now fly your drone anywhere that's not near a military installation, airport, national security locations, major sports games, etc. But most any park, conservation, mountain, lake, most scenic areas are fine for flying your drone. And if you get a drone that doesn't have geofencing, basically anything except a DJI drone, and you can fly it anywhere you want, you just take a risk by not following the rules and regulations, but it's unlikely anyone is going to bother you flying a small drone as long as you're not bothering anymore or doing it where you're not supposed to be flying

Really? What's next, you're not going to abide by those "police state" requirements to do things like, you know, register your car or, um, get a driver's licence before operating it? None of this would be necessary if it hadn't been for all the a_$h_le quad operators having done st_pid $_it like flying through the glide slope of aircraft in the process of landing at airports, or flying within FEET of police and traffic helicopters thus, literally, coming within FEET of bringing them down due to prop strikes, etc. Do you have even the vaguest idea what kind of damage can ensue by a two-pound quad impacting the windshield of a small aircraft coming in on Final at 85 kts? I fly quads and, guess what, I'm also a Private Pilot (MER/IFR/CFI); and I fly an SR22 (Google it). The last thing I need (or that anyone else needs for that matter) when flying my wife and two young daughters is some a_zh_le who doesn't give a $_it about anyone else who thinks he can do whatever the phuque he wants when the lives of my family and those of other people are therefore at risk. Sadly, it is *precisely* because of people like you that this has *necessarily* come about. As I indicated, I too fly quads but I am absolutely all for these requirements; they weed out at least some of the folks who have no business being anywhere near RC aircraft.

Across the street from me is the National Park. And, on a fairly regular, military planes come flying around. Usually in the zone of around 250 ft to around 500 ft. Drone flying around here can be difficult. I have talked to the police and the park rangers. I am told to keep my drone around 300 ft and no higher and I should have no problems. Don't land or take off in the park, and always bring your drone down when one of the military planes fly through. So I usually bring it to me and hover around 25 ft till the planes pass.
