My job is to teach new drone pilots. One of the most common mistake new pilots make is landing with the drone facing towards them. It sounds simple but if you're really new, you haven't yet developed a sense of awareness on how your drone is going to move relative to what you see. When having the drone facing you, all of your controls will appear reversed from your point of view (when drone is facing you, drone's left is to your right and etc). New pilots sorta expect the drone to mirror their stick movements when it's facing them, but that's never the case. They can either end up flying the drone into themselves or obstacles around them. I always remind the to put the drone 'nose out' and land that way. This way, they can at least match the stick movement to what their vision tells them what their drone is doing. After a number of flights they'll eventually develop their situational awareness.

I had a drone that had a setting to always move the same direction based on the stick no matter its orientation. It was really annoying whenever you turned around since you had to turn it off and one again to set the new direction.

I work for a DJI certified sales/rental and repair shop which I run, so I get a ton of crashed DJI drones into my shop and have seen it all! Without getting into the weeds as this is for beginners I will suggest a few basics. 1) I have had several come in because the owner forgot to remove the gimbal cover which caused the gimbal motor to overload and fail. This seems trivial but is very easy to do! 2) People tend to start up a drone in a garage or covered area and then walk it out to the take off point without resetting the home point, then freak out when it tries to or does (in low light conditions) auto return into their roof or some other obstacle above or around the original home point.

The two I learned the hard way are 1) Always look up first to confirm your liftoff path is clear. No upward obstacle avoidance! Stray branches ended my very first mini 3 pro flight. Ugghhhh. 2) be very gentle when unfolding the arms, especially the front ones. It is easy to confuse which axis they are rotating on and accidentally twist in a direction that snaps the attachment point. With a light

I lost mine on the third flight to sideways flight to a tree branch. I ended up focusing too much on the screen so I didn't see it flying directly towards the top of the tree. Keeping an eye on the drone while it's flying is so much more important when obstacles are nearby.

Take a piece of paper and label it front on one of the long ends and rear on the other end. Mark the left side left and the right side right. Put the piece of paper with the end labeled front away from you. If you move either stick towards the left the "drone would fly to the left. Same with right stick it will go to the right. Now, turn the paper so the end marked F is pointing toward you If you move a stick to the left it will fly toward the side marked L on the paper. Now. Think about which direction the drone will fly. It will fly to itsvleft which is your right. This is what he meant when he said the controls are reversed. I learned to basic fly a drone by buying a $40 Holy Stone micro drone and flying it in the living room. I would recommend the HS 420. It is the size of the palm of yourvhand and the propellors are guarded so it cant hurt anything. Also, it will hover in place when you let go of the sticks!

So I tend to take off from the hand most of the time now, with the Mini 3. But I don't ever use the sticks. I simply press the takeoff icon, then hold down on the takeoff "button" when it pops up...then just let the drone leave the hand. You don't have to press up on the left stick to take off. You just need to make sure your hand is not in a position to get clipped by the props, and then just make sure you hold your hand still until the drone pops up and hovers.

Plus there's no need to hold the drone by the sides. I always sit the drone on my opened palm and just hit the take off button as you said. That works perfectly. And the taking off from a uneven pole sounds silly. Better use the palm of hand or look for a flat area. We are talking about loosing your investment just because.

Not covered in this video these 10 more don't: Noobs should not fly 1) through tunnels; if the signal is lost and the drone returns to home, it will smash into the ceilings or walls 2) along (with) the wind down to 50% battery; the return against the wind requires more energy then the initial part 3) draining the battery up to single digit percentages; the complete discharges affect the battery longevity, but even its maximum output current 4) without a spotter; looking at the screen and at the drone might overload the new operators and a friend that is instructed to look at the drone and at the surrounding area, communicating both if things are fine and if there is any possible risk, is valuable 5) outside with the GPS disabled; besides the risk of losing the drone, it can inflict harm to pople, animal or property while getting lost. 6) indoors with drones that are not specifically beginner-friendly indoor drones with obstacle detection (and avoidance); it's more fun to fly inside with a $50 (non-GPS, garbage camera) toy drone with some rudimentary obstacle avoidance and prop guards than risk an Autel, FIMI, DJI, or other fancy drone 7) a new drone that is totally unfamiliar to them beyond visual line of sight and beyond the distance where they can no longer see the orientation of the drone; I'm not talking about the new regulations that appeared in some countries, but developing good piloting habits where the reliance for safe flying on the camera and phone is kept at a minimum 8) in headless mode; it just hinders developing proper habits 9) surounded by distracting elements; a beginner needs a quiet and predictable environment as not to get overloaded with information and sensorial saturation 10) over places where walking access is prohibited; if something goes wrong and the drone lands (hopefully not crashes), then it would be difficult to recover it, while an experienced pilot might prevent the thing going wrong in the first place (proper maintenance and pre-flight checks, flying recovery skills, identification of problems before a catastrophic failure, etc.)

Other mistakes yes, This weekend I flew in frozen fog (Foggy day and the temperature was -1 C). I had severe ice build up on the blades and the drone began flying eratically and slowly drifted down which it fought. Luckily I too was over level short grassy area and the rate of decent was slow. once I stopped the drone, I was shocked at how much ice covered the leading edges.

There is sand in the air, in the wind, on the ground. The motors and the air vents are like vacuums. And there is salt in the air. They will damage your motors and corrode the metal housing and circuit boards. Try to avoid sand and salty air as much as possible. Clean the drone with a clean cloth after flying while avoiding the propellers.

I recently took my Mavic Mini drone out for the very first time and winds were 10mph gusting to over 20mph. As a beginner, I can tell you it was nerve-wracking to watch the winds toss it around in the air. It held its own, but after only a few minutes I was simply too nervous and brought it down to land. It barely landed on the landing pad as the wind continued to knock it around as it was landing. I don't doubt that I'll be flying it in such winds when I get more experience, but I definitely wouldn't recommend attempting it for a beginner.

Another great video. Im not a beginner but I always get something out of Matthew's videos aimed at newbies. Another tip I would add for lightweight drones is to start the flight upwind if you're in any doubt about its ability to cope with wind speed. That way you're not fighting against the wind trying to return home on low battery.

Another great and very useful video here, one tip I'd like to add on safely flying sideways without sensors is before pulling off the sideway flight, make sure your gimbal is lined up straight forward, aim the camera towards the direction you want to fly sideways and simply check if nothing sticks out above the horizon. That's pretty much a guarantee your drone won't crash into anything. This can be very effective on checking out if you'll fly over trees instead of into them, for instance.

One thing that came to mind when you were talking about obstacle avoidance. Sport mode disables obstacle avoidance. It's really to the point where OA should be treated as a final measure of safety instead of a primary tool. It should be on, especially if you're new, but you should learn to pilot as though it's not there. As for birds, you definitely want to mitigate the hazard, but flying in Canada I'd never get off the ground.

just a tip, If you encounter a bird attack or sense an impending threat, and you're unable to land at that moment, a helpful strategy is to ascend to a higher altitude. I did that with my P4 last summer. I canceled the return to home and immediately lost connection with controller. I went to the flight history and saw where it last was at 100 ft height but it was moving. So I never found it. I also had a weird deal with my DJI FPV drone where I had a lot of electrical interference. Luckily I was out in the country. The goggles showed I had lost signal but my controller was still connected to the drone. I was trying to bring it down hoping the goggles would reattach. I ran it into the ground. Luckily I found it. I can tell because i tried to catch the drone when it did not lift off. Tho i catched it, i accidently touched the propellers with my fingers and blood was splashing out of my fingers like when a samurai is cutting heads with his blade. 👹🗡️🤕 So really not my go to if your a beginner, if you do this and this happens , just let the drone crash.

Just got a mini 3 pro. This is possibly the coolest toy I've ever had. You videos are fantastic for us beginners. This drone is so fun, the auto takeoff and landing, to just learning to bank and turn and fly straight and backwards. I got a smile from ear to ear. The best plus of this is your videos, as i can learn at my own pace, and learn something new literally every time i fly it. All the camera usage and videos and pics and editing are gonna be fun also. Learned more here at your channel than i ever did anything in school and college. Seriously, thank you from across the pond!!!

One important tip I think that nobody realizes is that if you are using active track and you’re walking, and need to update the Home Point; Make sure the controller is connected to your phone wi-fi or some sort of wireless network. Because, if the Controller is not connected to either your phone or some sort of Wi-Fi: I just found out that it will not update the home point. It needs a network or you have to download an off-line map. Check out a video on downloading maps and other things that you need to do before flying your mini 3 or 4 pro

Great video thanks! I’m super careful now after crashing and replacing my DJI mini3 Pro. I’d like to recommend if you like to narrate what you see while flying, getting a wireless Microphone. There are a few companies that make them including DJI. After some research, i got the DRONE VALLEY product. I’m very happy with the result. It eliminates a whole lot of post production.

The home point can also be changed to the controller in the menus. That way if you're doing an active track and have the controller with you, the home point will always follow without having to constantly update it. Great video!

Hi Mattheww... Great Info.... You started your drone in your hand but you didn't show how you pressed your two joysticks inwards while holding the drone which isn't easy... Would it not be easier holding the drone in the palm of your hand and pressing the icon with the other?

If you put the Emergency Propeller Stop in the EMERGENCY ONLY mode, and the drone it's in the air, if you have a regular flight and you accidentally move the sticks to the Emergency Stop position it can actually stop the propellers? Or only when it's a really emergency? Who decides about when it's actually an emergency? Thanks for the video!

There are several types of landing gear for drones and some brands make them to fit specifically. This allows you to take off from virtually any surface (floating gear for water) without having to hold the drone in your hand or taking the chance of debris getting into the air vents. I haven’t tried the floating gear, but the regular gear (looks like a helicopters landing skids) works fantastic.

Another two things that I recognized while flying older drones. When facing strong sun directly, the obstacle sensors might be confused and think there is an obstacle and stop the drone. So I needed to fly backwards or turn off the sensors to get it back. Maybe the issue is fixed now or maybe they are using a different technik now. Flying in fog or clouds can also confuse the sensors facing down. It happened to me a couple of times, that the drone surprisingly startet to land while the ground was still far away, just because it was all grey under the drone. You need to manually stop the landing than. Otherwise you might loose the drone.

One thing that has bothered me with all my drones, and is also present with this one, is that it is fairly easy to put the plastic hood on the camera incorrectly. You might force the camera in a lock that it is not meant to be in, and if you store it like that you might damage the arms/springs. Also, I am impressively inept in putting it back on properly and spend an awful long time doing it. :/

Question: What happens when you fly on top of a cliff and fly over the edge? Will it stay level or fly down to the bottom of the cliff? The altitude readout appears to be AGL (Above Ground Level). If the bottom drops out and the drone stays level, is the drone using an air pressure based (Mean Sea Level - MSL) altitude hold or GPS based MSL Altitude hold? Thanks for your very instructive videos!

Great Video Mattheww, Very informative. You've got a new sub from me. Got my mini 3 a few days ago. Went into an authorisation zone, and had to connect the remote (the one with the screen) to my phone hotspot. Spent half an hour trying to get the wifi settings up. Because it did all that automatically to my home wifi on first set-up. Well maybe its my age, but I went through every setting on the thing but still couldn't find it. Eventually I swiped down from the top, low and behold it worked, (just like my phone, Doh). If they had a little down ^ symbol, it would have saved me the time and frustration. Anyway in a future tips video you might want to mention that as well for us dummies. Cheers Jethro.

Flying over water is tricky. Recently, I tried to fly under an road overpass where a river flowed. I started flying in and noticed the drone's bottom sensor raised it quite a bit above the water right before I entered the "tunnel". I pulled back and aborted. If I had continued, it would have detected the water, raised it 1.5m or so above the water, crashed into the concrete ceiling and then crashed into the water and bye-bye drone. Luckily I noticed that before and avoided it. Now, I could not find how to disable that sensor on the Mini 2. Is it possible?

The biggest thing I find is the "bobbing" up and down it does. I have also found it saying it's closer or further away from the water than it is - so I try to keep it a bit up from the water now to be safe.

I ran into a tree with my mini 3 pro yesterday on my second flight. I was trying to test the fly around capability and was turning into a tree thinking the fly around would take over. Evidently I was using a small amount of side stick. My theory is if you use any side stick it overrides the fly around feature or I was too close to the tree when I curved it drone towards it. Anyway, the drone is still stuck 40’ up in the tree 😮. It will be interesting to look at the video footage. What ever I did…don’t do it 😅

Don't fly in frosty conditions, your props will freeze over and you'll need a new drone! Be aware of your battery % at all times, they can deplete quickly. Wear a baseball cap so you can see your drone in the sky, also use a strobe light and color decals on the drone. Use a take off and lading pad. If close to vegetation, use prop guards. Use the map on the drone screen to help get it back to you if you loose visual sight as it shows the shortest straight line route. AND GET CERTIFIED!

I did the download of the videos and photos to my phone which has the DJI Fly app. The Quick transfer is very good and as it says quick. The download to the DJI RC is much slower and you need to have the SD card in the RC. The only time I might consider dowload to the RC is if the SD card is full and I want to download while the Mini3 isn't close to do the Quick Transfer to the phone. If that was the case I could download to the RC SD card and delete the files from the drone SD card to continue making videos.
