The Clearfield seed is WAY expensive. Plant regular sunflowers spray twice with Clethidim to kill grass. Fertilize 100 lb per acre with mix of 46-0-0 and triple 13. And yes plant enough that deer don’t annihilate them. Two acres is a good minimum.

Yeah, that weed you asked about is sicklepod. It is a pain to get rid of if you leave it for a while.

Tell me about it! We ended up going between the rows with weedeaters then spraying the imox! That took care of it!

The imox will not kill the sunflowers...BUT I still tried to avoid spraying directly on them

Our field got water when it rained! We didn't do any extra watering!

you ever try an electric fence around it? im from NC but i live in SC and i plant a dove field every year, and every year the deer tee off on the sunflowers.

I havnt, don't have the budget for that. The deer did hit it pretty hard in the beging but didn't hurt the field too bad. I just plan to plant even more seed next year so the deer impact isn't as big a deal

@@PilotPatriot Go to your local barber shop and see if you can pick up a sack full of hair. Put it in sandwhich bags and poke holes in them. You will have to hang them up on some sort of small posts, or T posts. The human scent will keep the deer out of your field.

I tried to avoid the flowers if possible but of course got some on the flowers and it didn't hurt them. As long as they are clearfield sunflowers then the imox should be fine

When you spray the IMOX, is it okay to get on the sunflowers or do you really have to be careful with overspray?

Over spray is fine as long as they are Clearfield sunflowers.

Next year when you plant spray 2.5 oz/acre of Zidua and 1 quart/acre of trifluralin and that should fix you up. Very good pre-emergence combination. Clean dirt under the sunflowers 👍🏻

@@PilotPatriot I think the real name for that weed is sicklepod just to get technical about it but it has several nick names one of them happens to be coffee weed hope that helps you oh an nice field lots of work goes into sunflower fields but its worth it in the end! Just a pain to keep the deer from eating it all

Sicklepod “coffee weed” is a nemesis in the South East. If you are trying to kill it with herbicides, you have to use a surfactant (sticking agent) mixed into your tank mix because coffee weed has a very waxy leaf that the herbicide will often run right off. Also, it is recommended to spray them before they get 6” tall. Great looking field by the way. It’s funny how in the end, it usually comes down to steel in the field (manual labor)!
