FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

Excellent move. Many ppl are inspired to use sims to practice holds and approaches. You'll quickly learn there is a lot more to end to end IFR flights with regards to flight planning, picking up clearances, a wide range of departure procedures, enroute procedures, towered vs non-towered, etc. The sim is good for all of it :)

Finally, you and other pilots recognize that SIMS and especially when coupled with a good VR headset is an excellent learning tool! When I am flying into unfamiliar non towered airports, I practice the approach and flight plan on my X-Plane 11 sim with Occulus Rift VR system. This is a real safety feature. I learn the geography and the correct approach then I go fly it.. Flying to the new location then feels like I have done this before!! I import Foreflight directly into the SIM environment so I see my location in real time along with the real control zones and frequencies.. Can't beat this kind of practice!!

Great job flightshops! This covid19 thing got me and my flight school grounded , so I started looking into chair-flying :) . So , I went ahead and got the system and all the components priced out. Came up to CAD $4500 including 49" Samsung LC49HG90DMNXZA curved screen and Saitek Rudder pedals, trackir and an additional nav/com panel. I did go with RTX2080 hoping the Microsoft FS2020 will be running on it sooner or later. I did not budget the avionics panel though, as I am planning to CNC and fabricate it myself in my own woodworking factory as part of the entire cockpit .

As a real pilot of 34 years, 23 years as a Naval Aviator and 11 years as a Law Enforcement pilot, I can't stress enough how important simulation is in helping to produce technically and tactically proficient aviators. The military has known this for years. Mission rehearsal, procedure review, emergency procedures that can't be accomplished realistically or safely in the aircraft, crew resource management scenarios.....the list goes on and on. Great video. I use my little home sim all the time for instrument proficiency, and just for fun.

As an avid lifelong flight simulator user and a person with some flight experience, I have some advice. Get a VR headset! You just need a yoke, rudder pedals, and throttle quadrant. It will bring your realism from 10% to 85%. I would recommend the Rift S, but you might want to wait for all of the upcoming headsets to release.

I am sticking with TrackIR for now, I find virtual reality bit too limiting, it is great for immersion, but bit impractical, I cannot use my navigation app on my tablet, I cannot use my physical map, and even drinking water is bit too much of hassle. Do not get me wrong, virtual goggles give you great field of vision, and it is great experience for some type of play, it is bit limiting at the moment...

Awesome jump into simming! It's super addictive.... CPU is spot on since it looks like your doing XPlane, the combat sims (IL2 and DCS) are much more multi-core / AMD friendly and better optimized. IL2:BoX especially. I honestly though think you should have splurged on the yoke/pedals & throttle quadrant though, 2080ti is absolute overkill for most applications, and you can turn down the resolution / options to get the FPS you need. Yoke and pedals especially as the cheap throttle quads can work for the interim while you work up to something more. Really the controls are absolutely 100% the most important components of a flight simulator rig hands down. Headtracking / VR second (and yes you can use a 1070ti or equivalent and have a great experience). Not to mention with the number of subscribers you have I would almost guarantee some of the companies would send you stuff to use for visibility.

Really great topic! Thanks for highlighting the benefits of flight sims for real pilots. It's tough to make time to stay proficient as a VFR pilot. I too find that I can keep my head in the game in between trips to the real airport just by spending an hour each night after work on the flight sim. X-Plane 11, Three 27" Monitors and TrackIR makes it very real. Now, I just need to spend the extra for all the dials to complete the feel.

Another addon is FSX Flight, it allows foreflight in the sim and I love it! It even shows traffic in VATSIM as well as a pilotedge, it’s $20 USD.

This was just such a great video! I honestly wish that people doing there flight training, myself included, can afford to make a home flight sim to help out with training because it does help you get the feeling that a mouse and keyboard cannot. Hope you enjoy your sim!

Here's a parts list: pcpartpicker.com/list/QjGwRJ You can swap some cheaper components if you like. This has good storage, plus the same chip & GPU from the video, plus a good airflow/cooling case, powersupply. Note, this usses the same GPU/video card, and the one they used is VERY expensive. ($1,200 of the $2,500 total)

Yes, you can have the sim drive ForeFlight. However, ForeFlight is not an IFR-approved GPS. He still needs to be familiar with the Garmin GPS unit, that's why it's included in the sim.

It was an eye opener going to the FlightSimExpo. I knew I was never alone as a flight simmer but I also never had seen so many with the same interest as I. It was certainly refreshing. This was more inspiring than I expected. I am getting a panel and going for my Private License soon. I have to educate myself first. I've been simming since 1983 and I believe it is time to get my wings.
