Good point with don't worry about the radio - fly first then use radio if able. My problem is you are still harping on the cross-controlled situation. I teach slips in turns from base to final if needed. All slips are cross-controlled and a normal maneuver. If you are cross-controlled - a bank to the left and right rudder, the plane will basically roll to the right back to level and if you just lower the nose a easy recovery. It is the skid that is what is dangerous. When you have a left bank and too much left rudder and stall, the plane will roll hard left and over. We need to emphasize it is the skid during base to final that is the most dangerous. Slips (cross-controlled) are not.

I no longer square the corners. All patterns from the downwind to base and final is a single descending 180 deg turn. The bank is shallow and the numbers are always in sight.

What about when you have to change the pattern for traffic? Like extending the downwind?

@@pilotkaity The same applies. The turn from downwind to base and final is the same, a 180deg turn it's just a bit further out. No matter the pattern, I don't square the corners. I joke that they are carrier lands because at the boat the turn to the trap has no corners.
