Are expensive fibre optical cables REALLY worth it for faster data speeds? Let's find out!

Thanks for the Vid - I have been humming about ordering but pulled the pin

there is NO faster Data speed ..... signals - electrical has almoust lightspeed in these 4-5 or 6 meters.....theres no difference.... theoretical fiber optic cables are less fast or add latency because the electical signal must be converted into an optical and at the end vise versa ....

Hey buddy, as always excellent video and your honest impression 👍 I brought that cable and it is very good. Lightweight flexible and as you said the 8KX is suddenly recognised by the basestations. Take care buddy and have a great week👍

I needed to buy the 6M cable as the original is only 4.5m and therefore too short for my ceiling mounted cable system. Another thing unrelated but I just thought of it is I've stumbled across a great way to get awesome clarity. Set the HMD render quality to 2 and set the StreamVR SS to as high as you can get (20% on my 2080ti). The effects are amazing and I especially notice it in Elite Dangerous.

I wouldn't expect difference in display unless the original isn't up to spec. The main element for the optical purpose would be because it's not susceptible to external noise and can carry the signal for much longer distance without degradation due to capacitance, resistance, inductance of the signal along copper. The other benefit would be weight as you mention and the sheath is much less "sticky". Pity my first one that I was sent was faulty and resulted in speckles and the display kept cutting out. Still waiting for the replacement.

As a SIM guy myself I wish they made a shorter version and wonder if that would impact anything

So... apparently there is a tiny electrical-to-optical converter on one side of the cable (inside the connector) and an optical-to-electrical converter (or 'transducer') on the other side. And these have to be powered on both ends, so I guess the cable contains a fiber for the signal, and copper for powering the transducer on the other side of the cable. Right?

The 8kx should have come with a 6m cable stock tbh imho.. the stock one is too short for room scale vr compared to others though long enough for seated vr/flight simming.. this cable certainly feels lighter and nice to only use one as opposed to two USB ports.. don't think there is any difference in visuals between the stock cable and fiber optic in my experience.. distortions aren't seen the closer to the lenses your eyes are (the thinner the face foam the least or zero distortions you will see and of course if seen at all they are only in the outer peripheral vision and like the real human eye the peripheries aren't in focus anyway)

I'm sorry - unless I missed something - How is that fiber optics since usb and dp port cables emit no light..

@@theelteaso the end connectors have transceivers ok Cool!! Thx..

I'm buying this cable because the original cable is way too short for my playspace. I play flight sims and standard VR games.

Nice video! You are very believable, Steve. (Sorry, Mate, I cannot afford the headset or the fiber optic cable☹️)

What about latency? Because this is the thing that I'm concerned

My main passions are aviation, playing guitar and riding bikes.... I notice that a lot of KZbinrs share all three. Is it a coincidence, or is it something about personality type?

George Faulk 0 seconds ago I doubt the cable has anything close to a commercial grade fiber in it. Commercial grade is made of pure glass with a core size of 8um (Singlemode) or 50um - 62.5 (Multimode) You need a microscope to tell the difference between the two. That cable probably has a optic strand made of plastic with a core size of 980um if that small. Smaller is better in this case. Plastic will be lighter than copper so it will fell lighter. True you can have longer cables with the optic cable even if it is plastic without loss of quality. But saying the cable it self is going to increase video or audio quality is not true. It's the transceivers converting the light that determines the quality. Since the cable more than likely has very low grade video and audio transceivers for converting the light it will be helpful for increased length with less electrical interference but don't count on an increase in audio or video quality.

Fibre optic, not optical (yup, Pimax are incorrect) 😕
