I love most everything I watch from SWU and have been watching for many years, but today, for the first time, he stopped me in my tracks with that comment. I’ve raised an eyebrow occasionally and just thought, meh, to each their own, he thinks different and that is ok, but this did more than the eyebrow raise. It felt naive, and misinformed and outright disgusting to me today. Rapists don’t stop raping because they were able to find someone to pay for sex. Absolutely not. Rape isn’t about availability of sex at all. So many of the girls, under 18 and over, that you have interviewed are out there by will and against it because of what has been done to them either by rapists, society and “family” who have failed them as babies, poor choices and a multitude of other reasons. Regardless of what any of them say, the reasons they’re out on “Fig” are very VERY unlikely due to pursuing a successful career to support their family. And while they’ve likely been victimized their entire lives, they are out there absorbing victimization tenfold while continuing to battle the original forces that have them out there in the first place, oftentimes paving the same path for their own to live out their same destiny. Justifying it, especially in the setting you’re discussing, is honestly disrespectful to the people you think you’re supporting. They are most likely not taking the money they make back home to well fed children in clean homes, in safe neighborhoods. Many of their children are with distant family members and foster care. This is not, I confidently speculate, because prostitution is illegal, but rather it’s because of the circumstances their lives and experiences have led them to.
