JBL e1502 (New version) Ebay: ebay.to/2AcromL

(FilterPro site has links to suppliers in other countries)
Biohome Ultimate on Amazon UK: geni.us/GDV8oLd
Biogravel on Amazon UK: geni.us/o98PP
The e1501 is a well made, no-nonsense filter with a decent flow rate and good media capacity. If you have the the newer version (1502) leave the pre-filter foam as it is, set up the bottom tray with coarse, medium and fine pads then fill the remaining trays with the biological media (ideally biohome ultimate) including the 'post-filtering' tray which is thinner than the main trays and located just below the 'pre-filter' tray.
WHAT IS A FULL CYCLE?
If someone tells you the aquarium nitrogen cycle ends with the production of nitrate that is incorrect - please read on
A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome ultimate does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
(1 US gallon = 3.8 litres)
(1kg = 2.2 lbs)
Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres
Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres
You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that they are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat.
Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'.
This series of videos is all about trying to squeeze more efficiency out of internal and external aquarium filters which generally have a limited filtering capacity - If you have a filter you'd like me to feature in a video then please contact me on:

Im i little confused about the flow direction on the JBL filter you pimped. as water comes in the two sides of the top basket into the course foam , i cant see how the water stays to the sides bypassing the other baskets heading to the bottom before it comes back to the to top up the middle ??? did i miss something ??

Nice info. I like to see the different types of filters that are on the market. I run an FX6 currently, I’m looking for something different. Something just as good for less money. That’s one reason I love these videos. Information is knowledge and knowledge is power.

Had one of these for 8 years (gave up about a week ago). This was running alongside a JBL e1502 on a 270 litre heavily planted tank. I utilised 2 filters in order to provide more flow throughout the tank. I would have replaced it with the e1502 but had difficulties sourcing one. Saw your video on the Aquael Ultramax 2000 and purchased the smaller 1500. Really impressed with both the JBL and the new Aquael I recently acquired. Must admit I’ve always used the media provided. Never thought of ‘pumping’ them.

I will soon get 3 kilos of Biohome Ultimate. My plan for my JbL 1502 is: From bottom to top, First basket: Coarse sponge, medium and then a layer of cotton wool on top, then two baskets of Biohome and under the pre-filter basket a little more cotton or better Biohome. Have in mind that the wadding or fleece clog up too quickly when they are down, for example. My aquarium is stable and has run in well. But it doesn't get really clear. Suspended matter. Hence the idea with the cotton wool. On the other hand, the filter should also have a long service life. Sun 4-6 months. best regards

Another great pimpin! Say what you will about lava rock. I believe not all lava rock is created equal. I handpick the pieces I will use for density . If the piece is too heavy for its size I don't use it. I do have a mix of your Biohome and other goodies in my two filters. Working great! . Any filter will have less muck if you use a foam filter on the intake! I use one on my Tidal 75.

Hi Richard, I've learned a lot from your 'pimp my filter' videos - thankyou! I'd love to see you do a video on 1) undergravel filters run via a canister filter & 2) optimal filtration for nan tanks / small aquarium. I would send you in a filter, but am in Australia so this isn't an option. Regards

Hi Pond Guru, I have just had to replace my Blagdon In Pond All In 9000 as the UVC caught on fire. Luckily it melted the seals to the lamp and the water put the flames out. I have changed it for a Hozelock Bioforce Revolution 6000, with a Aquaforce 4000 pump. It has the Kaldnes K3 bio-media and the Cypricube foams as the mechanical filtration. There doesn't seem to be that much K3 in and they seem like they are designed to float and move about the bucket. I put my ceramic rings in the bucket as well from my last pond but as they are heavy they seemed to just weigh the K3 down. Would you recommend putting the rings in the bottom of the bucket (I have loads) and then leaving the K3 on top or should I fill the bucket with more K3 or is there any other media you would recommend? Be great to see a pimp my filter on the Bioforce Revolution.

Resurrecting this video from the dead with my comment, but i got myself new e1502 and basically did almost exactly the same setup as here. Biohome literally mutilated my flow. There's no way 2-3kg of it can keep e1502 going on any tank bigger than 60p/50litre. The media might be good and i see people praise it (mostly pond), but it's grossly overcalculated for e1502. This filter, with it's own media and nothing but sponge in the rest, will chuckle down to 600-800lph in a matter of days. Imagine what 3kg of Biohome will do to it after a month or two...

In the planning of a new tank. Juwel Rio 450 Stocking: 10-12 Discus 10 Sterbai Cory Might add some tetras while growing out the discus, but they will be relocated at a later state. I’m on the fence between dual 1902’s or dual 1502’s. With proper media, will the 1502/1501’s be enough, or should og for the extra basket of the 1902? (The issue is not the cost of the filter, but the heater. Would love the 1902, but it comes with 19/27 hosing. Would prefere inline heater, but there is no good ones in that hose size).

What is known as "Lava" is actually SLAG which comes from the production of Steel. The red comes from powered dye. Most of us who had the red version can witness it returning to its natural grey. You would know better if its to be used in a canister filter. I thought JBL made speakers, they were one of the best.

I’d say even less , around 200 litres I’d say. Although it says 1400lph with head height and how fully packed I have it it’s not pumping more than 800 lph max, so although it holds a great deal of media for the size of filter it’s not passing it enough times per hour through the media. That’s why I say 200 litres (55 us gal) is because it passes 4 times past the media and preferably I try for 6 times per hour. That was the problem with the sun sun (aps) filters, held loads of media but crappy turn over especially with their own separate pre filter connected. That’s the one thing I like about eheim. They are the only ones I know who put realistic lph on their filters. The power from my 1700lph 1200xl (2080) and my sun sun 2000lph are drastically different, the eheim being way more powerful

Which dechlorinator do you always use for water changes?
@pondguru
@pondguru 4 жыл бұрын
Any ordinary dechlorinator will make the water safe for life (including making it safe for bacteria) - just avoid using which claim to 'detoxify / bind' ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as they have a starving effect on bacteria which increases cycling time and reduces the efficiency (bacteria population) of any filter. API stress coat is a good one as it simply makes water safe.
