ADA ES-300 Canister Filter: bit.ly/3qHFsND
Yes, this is a very expensive filter but it is also masterfully constructed from stainless steel which instantly sets it apart from other canister filters we have looked at in this series - it is truly built to last a lifetime.
I managed to fit 2kg of Biohome Maxi Ultimate into the filter but it would easily take a good 2.5kg of Biogravel in a suitably 'floppy' mesh bag.

WHAT IS A FULL CYCLE?
If someone tells you the aquarium nitrogen cycle ends with the production of nitrate that is incorrect - please read on
A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome ultimate does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
(1 US gallon = 3.8 litres)
(1kg = 2.2 lbs)
Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres
Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres
Avoid using any products which claim to remove, detoxify or bind ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as they will have a noticeable starving effect on the bacteria which will manifest as an inability to achieve a full cycle due to a low population of bacteria on a starvation diet.
Let Nature do the work and as long as you have a suitable sized, well set up filter there is no reason why a full cycle won't be achieved.
You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that the recommendations are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat.
Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'.

Take the pipe from the intake of the pump put it to do bottom intake of the filter. This way the lid becomes the intake. Then the media could be on the bottom and the sponges on the top. I think you get the idea.

Sorry I've just found this now as Google / KZbin send me almost no notifications. I hope you're keeping well as the various agendas playing out are literally killing people through despair and desperation. Everybody needs stability because that cultures the best mental state. I have to say that I've never been more focused with regard to work, home life and garden as knowing the projected end game of all this 'covid' stuff allows a coherent plan to form. I have 2 plan A's - one is to develop our place into a permaculture set up and the other is to buy somewhere on a remote island and do the same there. Luckily I planned for some lockdown / crackdown nonsense a few years ago so by the Spring we should have a 12kW solar system (with batteries) finished, extensive veg beds producing a nation of food and a greenhouse which (due to the solar power) will enable me to produce good all year to supplement our diet. A big reason why I haven't made videos last year is that I was working on the various parts of the plan to get it more into place - it's taken ages and a fair chunk of money but it will be more than worth it when finished. I'm intending to start making videos on it as soon as the greenhouse gets built later this month as I will be able to film in there even if the weather is terrible. I hope you and the family are keeping physically and mentally well as it is a very strange time we're living through. Really the only positive is that all creations of man will end - let's hope that this one ends soon, lol

@@ericdavison2125 that is normal for filters like this. The smaller output increase the pressure that comes out of the Lilly pipe nozzle. My plants sway back an forth 4 feet from the outlet of the filter. I have a video in my KZbin account showing the flow.

Hi Richard, good to see you healthy, and making new videos again, I have already seem almost all yr videos, so please make more, learned a lot with you and Mark, UK also very NICE person sharing all his knowledge with us, just one question, I'm going to built a a aquarium 720 L with a lateral sump pretty large since is normally has 12% the volume of the tank, should I use this media shown or the normal size of biohome? Or it's just a question of stacking, and how many kg can fit in the space that I have? Don't stop posting new videos, take care

Richard ... please ... let's see ... That "nice stainless can" is like an Eheim Classic 250, made of aluminum (I mean ... a nice "can") for just over € 500 ..... that is, 10 times what it costs me in Germany an Eheim Classic 250 .... you pay aluminum at the price of Gold, as some pay what the Diamond cost, to obtain the Matrix Pumice Stone ..... It is difficult for me to reason and positively assess this "Pimp my Filter" (I no longer say this purchase), or the assessment or consideration of the qualities and capabilities of this "beautiful Can", if it is not for Snobism or a merely decorative question. (There is also the possibility that I over the money and is looking for different possibilities to squander it... waste it... or squander it again...) Taking into account that I have had an Eheim 250 Classic for 10 years, (currently in reserve for a possible emergency in one of my aquariums), and that this filter still works as the first day ... we could say that, I can buy 10 Eheim for the same price, and "have a filter" for the next 100 years, if I change a filter every 10 years ... If we further consider that the fish and plants in my tropical aquariums of between 80 and 125 liters care little or nothing (actually, they don't give a damn), if the filter is more or less "cool" or expensive, and not it does not affect their quality of life at all ... we could possibly be talking about "The most absurd purchase I could make to equip one of my small aquariums ... because for my aquariums in Malawi, one of those is only a joke. "Nice cans". (I also thought it was the most absurd Pimp my Filter so far ... to positively assess this copy of an Eheim Classic 250, with a price of gold, and in another "Pimp my Filter" , evaluating an Eheim Professional 4 + 600 very negatively is something that, honestly, I have a hard time "digesting" ...) It is incredible how sometimes we can get to value products like those of Sunsun / APS of a low cost and an adequate quality that offer us a good filtration and capacity (benefits) without having to ask for a credit to the Bank to buy it, and at the same time , We can positively assess here a Snob "Metal can", which is an absolute copy of an Eheim Classic 250, which does not offer any real benefit other than that offered by the Eheim filter, whose cost also, here in Germany is about 48 to 58 euros compared to 500 of that "nice can" ... To understand us ... with what that Can for Snobs costs, I can buy almost 2 Oase Biomaster Thermo 850 Filters of 1550 liters per hour, with heating included in the filter ... and a capacity of more than 5 kilos of Biohome Ultimate. .. we are talking about an Oase Biomaster Thermo, without a doubt, the best filter in its category in each of its versions of 900, 1100, 1250 and 1550 liters per hour, the best quality of material, an impeccable, robust and silent motor, reliability and innovation with the prefilter system, and a 5 year warranty .... and "this can" has a price almost equal to what 2 of its most powerful models .... please ... It is the typical product suitable especially for those Snob people who will enjoy filling it with that Pumice stone that Saachem sells under the name of "Matrix", and for which they charge a price equal to what the Diamonds themselves cost. they even don't deserve our attention. Richard, I give you my Like, out of pure friendship and thanks for your advice, for the kind and professional treatment that you always gave me, when buying Biohome for my aquariums ... that IS a great product ... so I can't give you a "dislike", I feel too grateful to you and Biohome. ... I think the "lockdown" is affecting us all too much ... Nice to see your again Richard, I love Pimp my Filter A big hug from Germany, stay healthy friend, my best wishes to you and your family.

When you do these upgrades you should actually run it to try it as I think your sponge setup will not work as it will clog within 2 days with a low flow pump, I’m sure the manufacturer has only 1 large course sponge and then biological media and that large open space is needed to maintain the flow rate..
@andystokes8702

I would like to see a video of somebody cleaning this filter after a few weeks work. Unless you include shut off valves in the pipework you are going to have to remove both the inlet and outlet from the tank. In most canisters you can remove just the sponges and fine polishing pad without disturbing the biological media, not so here, the whole thing has to be totally dismantled to get to the foams. Add to that the fact that the pump seems nowhere near powerful enough I don't think I'd be buying one even if it were 10% of its current price. It seems like it was designed and built by a very talented metalworker and welder with no thought to the practicalities of its purpose. Yes, it looks beautiful but unless you are planning to spend some considerable time just looking at it that aspect is pretty much irrelevant. In most cases it's going to be out of view anyway. It will probably last forever but turns over water no faster than a Fluval 107, is far less user friendly than a Fluval 107 and costs over 8 times as much.

Hi Richard, appreciate all the videos. For it’s intended purpose in a planted tank setup would the Biohome Plus not be the better option as it leaves some nitrates for the plants to use? Thanks.

I use Biohome Ultimate had it running for 3 years and doesn't remove nitrates. I don't believe the claims he makes.

@@justintechnic1995 I have a lightly planted tank so my nitrates are a bit higher. I think for your average fish keeper running a cannister filter it'll be difficult to create the ideal conditions. I did wonder with one thing he said about removing the oxygen from the water, sure that would mean you have hydrogen in your filter.

So why do they provide a large bag of carbon if it is intent for planted aquariums?

Carbon is often used on planted tank to help with clarity. Amano used carbon on all his show tanks.

There is no way that cable and connector is going to be safe for use on anything more than 48V by U.K. electrical standards. Especially round water.

Curious how it would do if you switched the filter with a pump that can also bring air in

I maintain 2 tanks every week with this filter, and the flow is way too slow. Too slow that it caused algae problems in aquascape tanks that with dense plants.

Make a diy canister filter with a pipe and a pump = 50 dollars. Result good filtration. Buy an ADA ES Canister = 450 dollars. Result good filtration. Seriously. People just don't know what to spend the money on.

Thoroughly enjoyed watching as always, but what a stupid, pointless filter. Beautifully made but a pain to maintain. Put trays and a decent pump on it then perhaps..... I compare it with my Oase Biomaster and it’s like a model T Ford. I clean prefilter sponge in two minutes and never have to disturb the Biohome media. Good turnover, too. This ADA is beautifully made but badly designed. Actually, not designed at all.
