There are much better alternatives than this filter available at a fraction of the price - check out some of the recommendations and associated videos below:
Oase Filtosmart 60 (Amazon): geni.us/BGo2O
It is now a ridiculous price on Amazon and still has no cradle to hold it on the back of the tank....
All Pond Solutions HOB-500 (Amazon): geni.us/Q4AI37t

Seachem Tidal 55 HOB filter (Amazon): geni.us/9fEuQ
Seachem Tidal 55 upgrade video: bit.ly/3I36ism
The good Oase range of external filters is the Biomaster / Biomaster Thermo filters - if you want a great filter for a medium to large tank then I would recommend those.
Avoid the Filtosmart range.
Oase Biomaster 600 canister filter (Amazon): geni.us/TBBKDhz
Oase Biomaster 600 upgrade video: bit.ly/3sORlnE
Oase Biomaster 850 canister filter (Amazon): geni.us/Yzrg3UG
Oase Biomaster 850 upgrade video: bit.ly/3oXvKYQ
The Biomaster filters are in very short supply due to their popularity - if they're sold out it is still worth checking out the reviews for them on Amazon from people who have bought and used them.

Bacteria and filter media: goo.gl/123gAF
How to clean an aquarium: goo.gl/bPMhvh

A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome filter media does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
(1 US Gallon = 3.8 litres)
(1kg = 2.2 lbs)
Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres
Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres
You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that they are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat.
Remember to use a water conditioner which does not bind / detoxify ammonia, nitrite or nitrate as that type of conditioner will severely limit bacteria numbers by starving the bacteria of 'food'.
Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'.....you'll spend less money on treatments too......basically the filter is the foundation of a successful aquarium.
This series of videos is all about trying to squeeze more efficiency out of internal and external aquarium filters which generally have a limited filtering capacity - If you have a filter you'd like me to feature in a video then please contact me on:

I think the major attraction to this filter is that it is not a hang on the back. It can fit easily behind a 10g tank and can be fitted with lily pipes. It makes it perfect for a small and efficient nano filter.

I’ve been using this filter for a few years. It’s quiet and efficient. Mine is completely stock. The water in my aquascape is pristine! I clean it (the filter) every 6 months and it functions perfectly. Highly recommended! No need to modify!

I bought this little canister from Oase just a month ago. It now has the hanger which I think ought to be included with the filter. I also switched the hose clamps out for the traditional metal clamps. I have mine on a 10 gallon long tank and I am using the spray bar which I had to cut down to fit my tank. I also used SeaChem Matrix instead of the media provided. I do like this filter. It does what I want it to do. It is quiet and I don’t have to clean it that much. I also wanted to get rid of my HOB filter as the flow was just wrong for this particular tank. I will try your suggestion for setup to see if I like it better. All that said, this filter is pricey, but this was the only little canister I could find that would fit my tank and it wasn’t as pricey as others in this range. The setup is easier if you use traditional hose clamps and they hold the hoses better. I don’t think it is that hard to clean and as I said I don’t have to clean it often. In my case my tank is on a bar and I can set the little canister on the end with it setup for the flow to be the length of the tank. The size of HOB that I needed would not work on the end of the tank like this filter does. Again, for the right tank and situation, I think this is a good little filter. In the US the All Pond Solutions HOB 500 is $52 and the Oase is $59 so the price difference isn’t that much. Also the HOB500 is longer and did not for my tank. So be sure you look at the size of the filters when buying for a specific tank.

@@pondguruI made the mod you recommended and the filter is working better. I was having gunk build up in the filter slowing down the flow, and the switch of media seems to have made a difference. As I side, the other filters you recommended wouldn’t work on my 10 gallon (I had actually looked at them and already was a fan of the Tidal) long as it was too short for those other filters. So thank you for reviewing and making the suggestions. They really helped me.

I hear what you are saying about this filter, which I currently use. However, I am using it in a 6 gal beta tank, I wanted a quiet filter, and this little guy is silent. It is not hung on the back, so the aesthetics are not outrageous. My tank is crystal clear, and if anything, I need to power down the outflow to reduce the current. I wish that I could find a foam sleeve to fit over the output arm. I looked at the canister that you suggested, however the output is way too strong, and they didn’t indicate the gph when dialed down. I do like your idea of reversing the media, as I was surprised that the sponge wasn’t in the first chamber too.

I am a fan of Oase, and Eheim. But i 100% agree about this filter. I bought it for my Dennerle Nano Cube. Dont have it hanging. So the tubes are not an issue that way. The low flow rate is okay for the endlers. But they backwards filterdesign is odd and i couldnt make something of it. I changed the ceramic rings out for Eheim substrat Pro and have a sponge where the water hits to avoid the waste going in the bio media. Also got a sponge on the intake to avoid shrimp going in and as a prefilter. Also cutted the corners of the devider a bit so more water goes through. But today i will make another change as you did and swap the bio and mechanical media around. It is very silent and has a slow flow rate. So i only recommend it for a betta or endler guppies, and when you dont want to hear any water falling or a pump buzzing. Otherwise, indeed just go for an actual H.O.B. filter. Good and honest Review Richard.

Just made the adjustments to the filter Removed the tube and the round sponge. Rinsed everything. Added a small hand full of the ceramic rings on the bottom of the mechanical part. Than 6 cm of filter floss. Than 2 cm medium course sponge i cutted to size. Than 2 cm of course songe on top. In the output side i added the eheim substrat pro and a few bits and pieces of other biological media 3/4 of that side packed without a media bag. Than a course sponge of 2 cm cutted to size to prevent substrat pro getting sucked in the impeller. I am a lot more satisfied with the filter now. Thanks for the idea of removing that tube Richard. Works great. Eventhough it will never be a great filter.

Done the mods awaiting on the bio gravel ,also placed a bottom row of bio home ultimate on the out flow side (spare from Fluval 207) . Also cut section from the bottom of the divider to hopefully allow better flow from mechanical side to biological side . We shall see . Thanks Richard

I owned this filter for 4 months in a 6 gallon aquascape. There’s a few things I must say for anyone interested in this filter. 1: Mine was silent. Extremely silent. Give it a few minutes to get the air out and it’s dead silent. It’s in my bedroom, so sound is very important to me. 2. The flow is very weak. It will not work with nano lily pipe skimmers, which is very disappointing after several attempts with different size skimmers. The suction isnt powerful enough to function with skimmers at all. 3. As discussed in this KZbin video, the inside of the product is designed backwards. It’s strange and I feel like it makes it difficult to efficiently cycle an aquarium, which gradually became the deal-breaker for me. To anyone looking to buy this filter, it WILL filter a very small nano tank. It is cute and small, if that’s the sort of thing you’re going for. But due to the inside, I eventually upgraded to a UNS Delta 30 Canister Filter. I think there’s few canister filters for nano tanks on the market that prime themselves. But of course, that is if you are specific enough to want such a thing. 🙏🏽

I use one of this filter for a 33 liters and 4 eden 501 for 50 liters, the only noticeable difference is the oase really more quiet that why a have one for my living room. You can take the intake pipe and the foam for modify the filter input and take all the inside for biological part it relatively easy to hide with the hardscape in a corner and is more easy to clean because is so noisy wen we reboot the filter. So if you dont mind a little bit noise the eden 501 is more abordable in France that half the price of the oase I have one eden thermo 511 and one thermo 521 there really good for one 75l and 100l aquarium the eden is often in promo on amazon, oase biomaster are my favorite filter i have the thermo 350 /600 and 850 they so easy to get clean with the prefilter it really time saving. Thank from the France to Pondguru for those video they really saved me from problems.

I use one of these on a 30 litre aquarium. I searched high and low for a small canister filter that could sit at the side of the tank and not have visible equipment inside the tank and this is the only thing I could find. The flow rate isn't too bad but certainly not spectacular also the way it's designed so that all the muck hits the media first is just baffling. It's incredibly hard to get the lid off to clean it, sometimes I'm having to wedge a screw driver into it trying to prize the lid off. Certainly wouldn't buy another one.

I set it up the same as you did, sponges and Bio-Noodles and used it on a 50L tank - it was useless. I kept getting ammonia and I didn't have any fish in it (I had cycled media but the tank was a new set up, I was using a fertiliser substrate for plants). How is supposed to work on a 100L tank when it can't handle 50L Defiantly don't buy one of these - no matter the brand

You can always just sit the filter slightly lower and run clear hose straight up to some 13mm lilies... Again tho, your talking about adding another 50 dollars to the set up. Now making it cost what a thermo 100 would cost... Plus there is no shut off on the valves or lack of valves. There are many other great options for smaller hybrid canister/hang on filters. The finnex is good, I love the shiruba 305... Def recommend theses 2 vs. The Oase 60. Btw, I do use the biomaster thermo 350 and it does a great job.... Thanks for the video... "use a water conditioner which does not bind / detoxify ammonia, nitrite or nitrate as that type of conditioner will severely limit bacteria numbers by starving the bacteria of 'food'." so what your saying is seachem prime is not something that youd recommend using... what water conditioner do you use/ recommend?
@pondguru
@pondguru 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I must have forgotten to put the link in this video description to API stress coat - I've not heard of any problems maturing a filer when that is used as it doesn't mess with the 'food' bacteria need to prosper.

Prime only detoxifies for 24hrs but the bottle states that the ammonia will still be able to be consumed/used by the beneficial bacteria
@pondguru
@pondguru Жыл бұрын
@@kassieguzman4514 What is written on a bottle often has no bearing on the actual effect (or side-effects) of any treatment. Simply scan through forums and see how people struggle to achieve a cycle when using 'prime' and how they are talked into using 'stability' to mitigate the side effects of prime (the starving of the bacteria) - 2 treatments sold when you only need 1 - who benefits there? Remember the mantra of 'Safe and Effective' which was all over media in the last 2.5 years regarding a medical procedure many people were tricked or forced into taking? It's pretty clear now even to the most incapable mind that it is neither safe nor effective but "Hey, we've got another 'treatment' to hide the side effects which are ruining your natural system......." Cui bono? yup.... Being able to understand this is recognizing the difference between Germ Theory and Terrain Theory and it's no coincidence that we are only 'taught' about Germ Theory since the only beneficiaries of following Terrain Theory are individuals with healthy bodies and well functioning systems which don't 'need' pharmaceuticals to prop them up....I should really do a video specifically on Terrain Theory and Germ Theory as it is totally applicable to aquariums, ponds and any sort of animal care. Thanks for the comment - it makes me realize that a video on this matter is needed. Best of luck with your tank.

What is the point of an HOB canister? It over complicates the filtration setup for its size and what it does. Just use a regal HOB for that size range.

Pondguru, it would be awesome if you got together with a couple of cad/3d printing youtubers and created and tested your version of the perfect diy filter, right here in front of us. It could be designed with things like simplicity, serviceability, scalability, off-the-shelf parts etc. Could be printed by anyone with a decent printer and some skill . You've got all the knowledge and experience, you have the platform to share and connect; how cool would that project be?! For those of us who like tinkering, and I would guess a lot of your subscribers are, this would be a very cool series to watch and a chance for you to collab expand etc. You could get the viewers commenting more on their ideas; like an opensource global design team working together. Added bonus: nothing will make the manufacturers listen quite like outdoing them on the cheap with open source plans, at the same time it would benefit them by evidencing your knowledge to convince them to make their products better. I can't speak for everyone, but I dont mind paying their prices; I just want their stuff to work as hard as it hits my bank account.

Great review as usual bud 👍 , it's so frustrating to see well established companies make such a mess of filter design when anyone who's had a couple tanks or in the hobby a few years can see the negatives in seconds it makes you wonder are they actually fishkerpers that design or QC new products , thankfully you are here to highlight flaws and positives to inexperienced or new fishkeepers

Yes the biomaster line is great, however, they choose to put their name on that crappy filter and sell it as their own. None of the hang on back canisters that I've tried have worked well. Bad design and bad implementation of the bad design. Simply putting a good pump on a bad filter doesn't make it good

I disagree. The filtosmarts are very good. However, this one, the 60 is crap. The top is hard to get off, and I've cut my fingers many times trying to get it open. It's pretty noisy and gets lots of air trapped in it.

I agree with you wholeheartedly... The fact is that BTC is the future of cryptocurrencies, and traders are now wondering if this is the right time to invest... before you come to a conclusion, you should look at things first. In recent days, the price of BTC has been fluctuating, which means that the market is currently unstable and it is impossible to say whether it will go down or up. While others continue to trade without fear of losses, others are patient. It all depends on the pattern you are trading and also the source of your signals. I would say that trading is going smoothly for me, I started with 2.5 BTC and in just three weeks I have accumulated over 13.6 BTC, using the trading strategy that experienced trader Andrew Stephen....
