James, the flip filters will definitely save you time on colour grading but I can see in the video that your filters are already starting to get scratched up. The beauty of software colour correction is that it doesn't get damaged while you dive.
@backscatteruw4 жыл бұрын
These filters can be polished using acrylic polish to buff out any minor scratches. The end results will be much better color in-camera, which you can always boost a bit in post as well. The advantage is that you will have more raw information to work with, instead of trying to recover colors that weren't present in the first place.
@crazyivan3154 жыл бұрын
I've used the flip 4, and eventually just kept it on the housing to protect the housing lens from scratches, then unflip it when I'm ready to shoot (these filters do scratch pretty easily). I've found that when shooting with ambient light, it does a good job on shallow, clear water dives, but performs rather poorly on deeper dives because the filter is filtering out that precious light that the tiny gopro sensor craves. Most of the deep footage I've shot with the filter on was too grainy to be usable (even with the "shallow" red filter from backscatter). While gopro doesn't have a fixed whitebalance setting, you should be able to set "native" under the pro-tune menu which uses "minimal color correction" in camera, which makes it easier to grade in post.

I use the FLIP system as well, but I also have lights and FLIP's macro lense. I usually put the FLIP filter for the depth of the main part of the dive on the top attachment point, and the macro lense on the side mount. I can FLIP the macro lense over for up close shooting and use the lights. For simple shooting, I just flip down the filter as I go along. It's a super easy system to use.

another tip: if you r using lights and your lights reach your subject, you dont need the red filter. I can manually correct white balance in my gopro 7 by adjusting the kelvin numbers in the settings even underwater.

I came here to make this EXACT comment. Turn off the gopro auto color. Set your iso min to 100 and max at 400 and set your color to 6500 Kelvin. Last. Switch to wide angle and BAM your gopro now knows you're underwater. Works great with sola 2500 floods and the red lens from the flip 8 system and the macro 15 lens. I use the 25' or shallower red lens with the macro lense since anything deeper than 25' im guaranteed to be using my floods, not a red filter. This is what works for me with my gopro7. Looks good in your comparative clips but I would be concerned about the reduction in light entering the camera, given that GoPros perform progressively worse as light levels decrease. Also, how well do they resist scratching? Looking forward to the camera settings quickie!

Any filter does take away a bit of light from the camera sensor, but Flip doesn't have much of a practical impact. At deeper depths your footage will look better when shot with lights than without, but it's still better than with just a filter than nothing at all.

I got the same kit sadly a very common problem seems to be that the filters break close to the hinges (just after 20 dives) luckily it was my deep 50+feet one so i still can use it for the most commen recreational depths. Just be very very gentle using it. Sadly Backscatter never respond to my mail so im a bit disapointed. Even the gopro quick software can do perfect colour correction so I don't think ou need to add filters for general use. And lets face it, if you are looking to do serious photography underwater you wont be using a go pro!

@@DiversReady Hi James but you definitely do want to get the gopro of auto white balance (if your leaving it on auto) otherwise the white balance has a nasty habit of shifting in the MIDDLE of your shot aka ruining it even with the filters on (ps been using flip 7 for a few years now and love it as well)

Another downside of these is they don't fit the aftermarket or knockoff brands of housings. I use a Apeman action cam. Only $50 and takes great video. I bought one of these flip filters and then ended up having to modify the mount by cutting it and using a stainless steel zip tie riveted to the original mount to form to the slightly different circumference of the lens on my camera. I figured I could spend the money I saved on diving instead of buying gear.

The colors with the Flip Filters look HORRIBLE!. It makes the images worse, look like bad colored flick from the 1950s with higher resolution. It is understandable, that you got them for free and need to talk positive about them, but they really suck big time!. It is much easier to make a few different red full screen images and add the layers in low opacity on top of the scene. One can also play with the opacity to get the desired results. 2nd option (with a bit a learning curve). Get DaVinci Resolve for free. While it is quite complicated, the color correction is pretty simple and the results are great. Both options are free and deliver an about ahundredandahalf miles better result than the dreadful flipfilters.

All you have to do is increase the red in post production. This seems totally unnecessary and actually makes the footage TOO red.
@backscatteruw4 жыл бұрын
The problem is that the camera doesn't pick up any red to increase or recover in the first place. If you and try and do that to normal unfiltered GoPro footage the quality will absolutely go to unusable waaay before it starts to look natural. You either need to add light or a filter (or both) for it to pick up the proper color tones to be able to properly work with in post.
@laceyourface4 жыл бұрын
Wait, am I the only one who thinks it looks worse? Its too red..?
@fishingexchange37424 жыл бұрын
I agree with you
@mabr64444 жыл бұрын
Yes, looks horrible. Waaay too much red.
@mangocovescuba4 жыл бұрын
My experience with the Flip is that the deeper filters make the footage look far to red. The Flip is good at giving you more red to work with with in post when you have to color correct anyhow. Lights are going to be your best bet anyhow, but this is a low cost first solution.
@backscatteruw4 жыл бұрын
It's true, at deeper depths the effect of a filter can start to make things appear a bit artificial. This is mostly notable beyond depths of 50ft where there are just so few red, orange, and yellow tones left in the water. Just like Mango Cove Scuba said here, the filters give you more red to work with in post if you plan to color correct, but really using video lights and a filter simultaneously at depths of 50ft and beyond is the best way to get proper exposure and natural looking color.
