In answer to your question, l do think you’re making a big mistake to be honest. Firstly, why do you need a cows tail? Towing? Well there’s definitely better, more effective and safer ways to tow. Realistically, the chest harness is for live bait swimmers or securing bank belays, both risky, complex and rare situations. Secondly, that little weak plastic D ring you rejected, is specifically designed for the chest harness. It is made of plastic so will break very easily and actually the back bar has a gap in it, so it gives even easier and therefore is not a risk to use. What is a risk to use, is the cows tail itself, as you are using it. 1. As slack as you are is creating a big snag hazard and 2. With a snap gate carabiner, which is another big no-no, as it presents an accidental clip, as many people have found out to their cost. Nice knife, but leash needs to be removable, what if you need to pass it to someone or use it away from your PFD. Whistles need to be on elastic and long enough, so that you can move your head around without it being pulled from you mouth.

With the cows tail, I believe that d ring is actually split, meaning you can attach your crab to it. And with that knife, I would have attached the extra cord with a clip to the preexisting cord and the strap, so you can quickly detach it.

The cowtail ring isn’t split, but I had been thinking about attaching my knife with a small clip.... might still do so

I would 1)cut the ends of the rope 2) get a lighter 3) don't directly put it in the flame but hold it a few cm away. Then press the end on a flat surface. This will prevent the rope fraying. Awesome video💪

Out of curiosity l just went to watch Seth’s video. This is not what he says at all. Well a little bit. Kokatat do put their break away buckle on the quick release chest harness. But this is done by the manufacturer and not a modification by Seth. So if the user of the Kokatat PFD is unable to pull the chest harness release, then it will still release from the break away buckle, as designed by Kokatat. Your home made set up on the other hand, is connected to a ring with 14kn breaking force, so definitely won’t release in an emergency! I think the message here is you need to be very careful what you watch online and how you interpret it. And then, how quickly someone can go from inexperienced novice to instructor just from watching a video. Even then sometime the elite don’t follow best practice, as their environment is pretty specific as well. As an example, Alex Honnold does a love of climbing without ropes but l wouldn’t suggest this is the way ahead for most climbers. As people have previous commented, you need to attend a professional certified safety and rescue course. If you’re in the Uk, let’s go for a paddle 😀

Do a rescue course - I did one and the carabiner is for attaching to what you are rescuing, not to you(for exactly the reasons you mentioned)

I would just do away with the cowtail and rescue belt altogether. Go on a white water safety and rescue course and learn how to use them correctly. Too many people have been caught out by them unfortunately. Other than that I love the chanel man, keep it up. Start really pushing yourself 👍👍

Just to let you know👍

Hy If you cut the D ring , its the perfect place for your Cowtail , but I also can leave the D Ring like so and clip the cowtail in because the D ring is designed to break by a force of 0,8 kg . So if you stuck whit your cowtail the d ring will break . Your idea to clip the Cowtail in front of the loop of the harness is super dump , the carbiner can easily clip into the loop and than you have a unsolvable system . The blue ring is to connect your PFD to a rope and comes on your back . If you not really have an idea what for the stuff you use , please don't make videos about it

Thanks for the feedback! I actually saw this in a video done by Seth Ashworth who I guess knows his stuff! I’ll let everyone know how it works out in the long run, and stay safe yourself!
