The song was massive when it hit but few know the backstory. Pimpzilla was actually a singer named Oedipus Claudius King from Huntsville, Alabama. He was a moderately successful R&B singer, who did the "chitlin' circuit" in the late '50's with a band called Diddly & The Spankers. Around 1964, he went solo and did a few regional hits, mostly in the South, but in 1967 he had a national Top 100 hit called, "Busted, Black and Beggin' Dat Bitch Agin'". He sued the record company, Schlepping Records, Athens, GA, because he claimed he wasn't given his royalties. It dragged out for years. Finally, in the early 70's he received a pay-out, but during the litigation he was not allowed to record. However, in 1976, he re-emerged with the song, "Pimpzilla", which was the story of his years of fighting Schlepping Records for his money. The song was also credited with being the first "OG" song and inspired the gangsta fashion scene. King released a few more songs, like, "Bitch Be Gone (Youse Got A Stinkin' Ass!)", "Brothers Gotta Hump That Thang", and a disco hit that incidentally became a hit in France and Germany, called "Long Dick Ding Dong Vs. Big Donkey Dick Kong". The last song was also used in the martial arts action movie, "Streetfighter 8: Big Mama Ho's House Of The Dragon Queens". Disenchanted with the recording industry, King left the music business around 1981, and studied Buddhism for several years. He also was a memberof a semi-religious order in Golden Hills, CA , called "The Ramalamadongs" in the '80's. Today, he writes and paints, but leads a very private and secluded life and rarely appears in public. "I just wants to live ma life alone now, away from all that bullshit anymore. Don't contact me no mo'. Dig it?", he tweeted on Instagram in 2021 when contacted by the fan magazine, "Soul In Da Hole". I still love this OG original!
