Gabriel, Well of _course_ you have a beautiful voice: you've studied the sounds from dot one! :-) Seriously, quite apart from your fine singing, I think your approach(es) to the pronunciation of languages is really first class. Well done and thank you!

I really want to see you take these singing skills to the karaoke room in Japan once you're a bit further into Japanese! You could be the coolest foreigner ever.

I have taught myself 2 languages using SRS and am now working on my 3rd. I don't use images though and wonder if this is really worth the extra effort. I don't doubt that it's worked well for you, but is there any research to suggest that using images is quantifiably better for everyone? Otherwise I can imagine that it's just training your brain to associate one particular image with a word, not necessarily a holistic concept (including experiences and emotions) with which you might want to associate it.

codebeard I think the point is more that you need to not be doing translation on the cards for the most efficient way of learning the new language. Pictures are a good way of learning vocabulary without having a translation.

***** thanks for the link, that was interesting. Do you have the actual citations for that research? I like to read these studies myself. I was also thinking, I might try adding some new vocab in German (which I'm currently learning), some with just words and some with images, time how long it takes me to add the cards, then study them both for a few weeks and see what the stats are in Anki for each group.

***** There is also research saying that translations can be efficient. I quote: "Vocabulary expert Paul Nation (1982) concludes that learning vocabulary is faster for many learners if the meaning of the word is given through an LI translation first." Source: "Myths about teaching and learning second language vocabulary: What recent research says" by K. Folse
