A pine needle basket can be sewn using raffia, a type of palm native to the tropical regions of Africa. While the raffia is in keeping with the natural 'feel' of the pine needle basket, synthetic fibers can also be used just as easily. The roots of the raffia are threaded through a large needle. The end of the raffia is held in line with a group of 7 longleaf pine needles at the sheath end. Raffia is then wrapped around the sheaths several times and the needle then comes up at the end of the wrapped section to make the first stitch. Nancy Basket demonstrates the construction of a pine needle basket in this video. She explains the spacing of the stitches, the term "feeding the tail", and the way to end a piece of raffia and begin a new piece.

Where do you get the dried long pine needles, the trees around me don’t have such long needles? Also how do you prepare them?

Looks very beautiful to dye the pine needles the different colors, but what about the safety of the dye? I know a lot of leather dyes have some serious chemicals in them.Thank you for the video,I have many pine needles :)

This is interesting, but very hard to see what you are actually doing. It would be great to angle the camera more toward the work. All I can see is your fingers. I like your verbal instructions though.

I'm wondering how to make the base open?...

Hi Tahnia, You would want to just keep working outwards like a spiral before you bring the tail up to create depth. That will give you a wider base.

I can't see what your hands are doing as you talk. Camera needs to be steady and focused on a clear shot of the work, as you explain it. Thanks.

Nice but a little more rustic than some more refined ones on the instructional videos I watched. Don't like the stubby ends left on or the use of such fuzzy raffia.

The camera angles frequently do not show what is being done. The verbal instructions to "do this," put the needle here like this," are hard to follow. I had watchd three other how-to videos before this one or I would have been completely lost. As it was, I quit watching. The instructor is obviously very knowledgeable, but cannot articulate the instductions.
