The owner bought this 2012 Chevy Malibu at an auction, for cheap! It has a few annoying issues: A/C doesn't work, check engine light is on, power windows and mirrors are acting up.
He called me in to do a diagnosis and repair estimate.
Did he get a good deal, or a LEMON??
Let's dive in!
New toy: www.flir.com/products/flir-on...
Enjoy!
Ivan

Love it when you celebrate no parts needed. When you charge AC initially charge both high and low sides open with car off and compressor off. Then shut the high side off before starting car and continue to charge through low side. You can charge with the can upside down when the compressor is off, but never when the compressor is running.

My wife's work car had a 30 degree difference at the vents with max ac on (40 pass vs 70 driver's). The problem was a slightly undercharged system, the passenger side of the evaporator on her car gets refrigerant first and cooled very well. The drivers side of the evaporator was getting warmer refrigerant and blowing warm. The fix in that case was to add 4 more ounces of r134a, 40 degrees out of all the vents. I'm so thankful I consulted iatn before pulling the dash out just to find the blend door was fine.

Ivan, it's pretty normal to have a split in temperature at the vents when the system is low on refrigerant. When it's low, the temperature of the evaporator gets cold on one side, the side closest to the metering device, and then as you charge that temperature drops and will cool the entire evaporator. Often the way the HVAC boxes are built it will blow one side of the evaporator out one vent and the other side out the other vents. I'm not sure if they design it that way on purpose or not but I've seen it quite a few times.

When I buy car at auction you have about 10 seconds to decide: Look under sills, panels bonnet conformance rust etc. Check the dashboard lights especially CEL if its on. Look and listen to exhaust when running, listen carefully to engine for thumping rattles. ...thats about best you can do, make a judgement call and bid to no more than you think its worth. More flir one videos! Imagination is key for that tool. Parasitic draws like you mentioned. Misfires I'm sure are a good use - check exhaust temps to see dead cylinder instead of a cylinder drop test. Curious if it'll help identify bad injectors / solenoids not working when they get hot, etc. What would a clean / dirty maf sensor look like? Perhaps it can find circuits shorted to power/ground, or starter cables with high resistance. Bad grounds causing heat. Oh my I may just have to get one!

Ivan, I'm also really curious how you would troubleshoot an HID headlight, without using swap-tronics. You can trace 12v to the ballast, but then how do you determine ballast or bulb? I've even read in my 02 maxima factory service manual, where the factory-recommended method is to swap em around. Seems really risky and time consuming on some cars to take out a known good bulb and risk dropping/touching it with your fingers.

I am surprised that you did not add any oil to the AC system especially since the system was open with no refrigerant at all and you had no idea how long it was like that.
@Garth2011
@Garth2011 4 жыл бұрын
I believe most "normal" automotive A/C cold temps at the center vent with the inside air switched to recirculation mode and the blower set to high, is no more than 40F degrees. Any warmer than that isn't properly cooling. 34F is ideal but hard to find that temp while parked. There are digital temperature gauges that have a remote probe you can insert into the A/C center vent and read the inside temps from under the hood or outside the car. The ones I have seen have a wired probe that attach to the temperature gauge and they are fairly fast and accurate. Fixing the power mirror and window switches is very cool however, before they go obsolete at the parts dept., I'd buy some new ones for the future or find them at a salvage yard one day. I think those newer A/C charging stations are cool however, they are also extremely over priced IMO. It still takes an hour or so to recharge an A/C system, to do it right, so those machines aren't really saving that much time, just a convenience especially when adding PAG oil. I have seen many mechanics fail the process of vacuuming a system then holding the suction for the proper amount of time to evaluate for leaks. A few minutes isn't long enough to diagnose a leak. In this repair, being that the line was open for an unknown amount of time, it would have been best to have replaced the drier as well (maybe that came with the hose/line assy?). Great review Ivan, thanks.
@patburnsent
@patburnsent 4 жыл бұрын
I agree you should allow the liquid refrigerant to leave the high side hose through the gauge into the low side but there is no reason to 'purge' the hoses after disconnection. The empty can can remain connected to the middle hose which keeps air out until the next time you need it. If you later notice a zero reading on the gauges it indicates a potential leak somewhere in the set.

Pulling a vacuum, then letting it sit for 15-20 minutes, don't always work! I recently recharged a friends vehicle, where I pulled a vacuum, let it sit for 5mins just to see if it actually held a vacuum, then pulled a vacuum down to as far as it would pull, and let it sit for 15 mins. When I came back, it lost some vacuum. I checked the system over, and couldn't find anything obvious, so I pulled the vacuum back down to as far as it would pull! About 29in/hg. I figured it had some moisture left it it, that was being a pain to pull down, and discounted the loss in vacuum. So, after I pulled it back down, and then let it sit for another 15 mins, I checked, and it lost no vacuum!! PERIOD!! So I continued!! I vacuumed it for an additional 30 mins (the system was originally empty when he bought it, for an unknown length or reason) and after that, I recharged it! It held pressure for a day, and as I walked by one evening by chance, it was very quiet, and I heard some hiss! I couldn't see anything, but when I tracked it down, the compressor was leaking! One more day, and it was empty again!! Had I just added air pressure minimum, I may have found the leak. Whether N2 or shop air, or something, may have shown where the system was failing! But, pulling the vacuum on an old system, likely caused all of the old seals to draw in tight, and prevent a suction leak! Or perhaps it showed a suction leak at first, and I ignored it, and kept on with the suction! Either way, I feel pressure would have exposed the problem earlier! Maybe even before we spent the money in all of the refrigerant! Then lost it all!! That sh/t ain't cheap!! The last guy to work on it put dye in the system! After the stuff leak out, and I looked at it again, it looked like someone had murdered the compressor, except in green not red!! I don't know if I could have spray painted it that much green, so evenly!

i do like the old tech, less to go wrong :-D Although in that case a box of bosch relays would have been kinder to the switches. Nice add on for the smart phone :-D, handy for house heating/cooling problems and seeing what is getting hot on general pcb's. In cars it may show the heat in dirty connectors, less contact material = hotter pin/joint. If you havnt walked around pointing it at everything i would feel sad, that's what a new toy is for ha ha :-D That cam sensor is playing a game, it could be back :-(

the problem with thermal imaging for temperature, it takes too long for the duct and vents to reach the air temperature, best bet is an old style ac/test thermometer or thermocouple sensor type for fastest readings. automotive vent temperatures fluctuate too much for accurate material thermal readings.

Correct me if Im wrong but 45 and 50 ° F isnt proper A/C numbers. Did your customer remember to rpl the Accumalator/Drier? You can flush everything accept the Accumalator/Drier. If you dont rpl the Accumalator/Drier after opening a system or a major leak the A/C will never reach proper #'s. I always thought it best to put the system under a vacuum and then take lunch; gave it plenty time, just saying, not sure 15 mins was enough. Im in Texas and there's no way those vent #'s would work in Texas; granted Im sure your customer simply wants to flip the car as cheaply as possible but 1st signs of a hot n humid day the Accumalator/Drier could freeze up from too much moisture in the dessicant bags; always best to rpl it if you want ice cold 36° F at the vents. Anyway, good video.

Great video Ivan. Consider adding a ounce or 2 of PAG oil to replace oil lost when the hose blew. Have to be more careful with newer systems that use only a pound or so of 134a. Safest way is to replace the accumulator and check with the shop manual. They usually give you amounts of oil stored in components. Also burnt electrical contacts won’t last long if they are cleaned. They have a special plating that once wears off quickly causes arc flash and failure. Tell customer it’s a temporary fix.

Amazing how far GM has fallen. I guess 7 years is the new 25 in the 21st Century. How sad is that?!? I did the same repair on the power window switches on my 22 year old (at the time, 4 years ago) Volvo 940, only there were no black, burnt spots. The copper contacts had become tarnished - that's it! A little wire brush action, along with bending the spring a bit to put a little more tension on them, and they've been working great the past 4 years since. Had no DeoxIT back when I fixed them either. If they give me trouble again, I'll just hose them down with DeoxIT. Best part about the switches in this one ... NO TOOLS NEEDED! All can be dismantled by hand. Now THAT is engineering! My 33 year old Grand Marquis has all its original power window, mirror, seat, and lock switches, and not one of them has failed in the 17 years we've owned it. 265K miles! Still going! Now I see the value in the A/C adaptors with the valve in them. I always wondered how everyone purged the high side line. I haven't been able to do that, since mine don't shut off - as soon as they're connected, they're live. No valve on mine at all. Time for an upgrade I think! :) Great vid, Ivan. I'm so far behind on KZbin videos I'm not sure I'll ever catch up now. Just got to yours tonight ... and now I see Eric has 3 or so that I haven't seen yet, and more are coming every day. 1st world problems, lol. Not enough hours in a day, and they're getting shorter quick now! 😨

Kind of expensive using R134A to pressure test the system ! I guess it is cheaper than buying a nitrogen test setup.

Im more shocked about blowing R134a in the atmosphere, it is 1430 times more effective in increasing the greenhouse effect then normal CO². In germany the vine for that can get up to 100.000€ o.O

@@timowallin8020 Yeah. Would it be cheaper and faster to let the local a/c fitter shop fabricate a new pressure hose ?
@richardcranium5839
@richardcranium5839 4 жыл бұрын
not worth the hassle too many bends and curves in the aluminum lines. as for jus a hose replacement it broke there for a reason probably a defect in the metal of the connector sharp spot etc. plus 134a takes a teflon lined hose a real pain to work with and not get a leak.
