Now that we have a good understanding of the VCM Cylinder Deactivation System, it is clear that this Honda Accord V6 has 2 SEPARATE ISSUES:
1) Slightly low compression on Cylinders 5 and 6.
2) P3497 Caused by a VCM Malfunction that Permanently disables Cylinder 4
Let's double-check the valve clearances on the Front Bank...did the Dealer do a proper job adjusting the Valve Clearances?
Then we'll attack the Cylinder 4 VCM problem...Dealer apparently already replaced the VCM SOLENOID on Cylinder 4....hmmmm

Enjoy!

Those rear brake caliper bolts have a washer that goes between the caliper bracket and the spindle, I think it's a shim. It falls behind the rotor when you install the caliper if you don't know it's there. Don't ask me how I know.

This is a great video series on this system. Well done, Ivan. There is a service bulletin for those front spool valves for oil leakage onto the alternator. The bulletin specifies to replace the spool valve and both gaskets. You still have to buy the entire unit with the base but the bulletin actually says to remove the top half from the new spool valve and toss out the base. So, you just replace the valve, the separator plate and the two gaskets. Also, I've been told that if they're not installed and torqued properly it can twist the valve and the plunger inside can hang up. Don't use aftermarket on these. It doesn't usually end well.

Had this exact problem on my 2010 accord 3.5. Cyl 6. Turns out the piston rings are garbage and it kept fouling plugs because of oil blow by. Put a new plug in it and traded it in. No more hondas for me after that. Low tension piston rings combined with vcm cylinder deactivation is a disaster. These engines were a mistake if you ask me. Had plenty of power but was never smooth especially when cylinder deactivation went on and off. I kept getting cyl 6 misfire codes and had to drive with spare tools and spare plugs in the trunk. Only had 60k miles on it too!

The old J series are great in my opinion, but when they went to VCM that was a big no no for me. They can all be made reliable, if you don't mind getting your hands dirty. What you might call a mechanics dream, or mechanics nightmare, depending on your perspective.

@@jtjones4727 just some extra info. I went online and found out how to deativate the vcm system. Unfortunately that turns the check engine light on and so i wouldnt pass state inspection. So i was watching part one at work during lunch yesterday. Then wouldn't you know it? I get a Pilot with the same symptoms amd same engine. But this had 190k plus miles. So 1st thing I found was total trim was -40%. Cleaned m.a.f. Dropped to -14%. So that was one problem. Checked all sensors, fuel pressure etc. Found nothing wrong with any inputs. But did find valve adjustment off and Autolite spark plugs. Which is a big no for Japanese engines. Adjusted valves, replaced spark plugs with NGK's and installed a new M.A.F. Smooth as butter. These things are difficult to diagnose with so many reasons that the engine could misfire.

Ivan I could feel the frustration in this video and I can see how you are getting more cynical and sarcastic as time goes (and rightly so), because of all the B.S. that people are doing out there... You are an amazing technician and you are stuck in a world of morons. Good job on keeping a level head and sticking to "what you know" and "proving the truth" so that you make the right call. It hasn't gone un-noticed. I spent a lot of time in my dad's shop before he passed away (72 from Cancer) and I was his "electrical wizard" that would take the time like you do to figure out these difficult problems. That's not to say he wasn't an amazing mechanic because he was but he was better suited for the mechanical area because that is what he grew up in as his time as a Mechanic whereas I came to work with him when electronic control was just starting to become really complicated in vehicles and I understood it more in depth than he did. So I totally get what you go through and it's why I love watching your videos. I'm re-living the world I once worked in through your videos. I'm now in a wheelchair due to an unfortunate accident a few years ago and I'm mostly paralyzed from the waist down. If it wasn't for your videos I wouldn't still be able to enjoy this world of complicated electrical diagnosis. Cheers, and thank you for what you do.

Those plastic injector caps can be a nightmare. Working on some of my classic Honda's from the late 90's, I've had every one of those plastic caps get stuck and break off into the hole when trying to remove the injectors. I've had to pull the entire intake off on some of the F series before just to clean all the broken plastic out of the hole's so I could replace some injectors. Also I love the OTC fuel injector pulse tester, but I have learned to be very careful with that tool. The first one I bought a couple years back, the first time I used it on my Honda, I did the first 2 injectors no problem, then I forgot to unhook it from the battery and went to hook it up to the 3rd injector, and the 2 wires very briefly arced together, and that was it, it never worked again. So I had to drop another 130 dollars for a second one, but I am very careful with that thing now.

The service data said that 4 cylinder mode is only activated at highway speeds. Probably above 65mph. Eric-O found out that the pintel on the aftermarket solenoids were too soft and letting oil bleed by. He lightly sanded the groove it wore into the pintel and it started to work again while he sourced a genuine OEM part.
