@@throttlebottle5906 YES !! A neighbor _had_ a Ford Taurus (the era with the round back window), and this thing would endlessly be problems refusing to start, and make him late for work. "Anti-Theft" light would be on, and loaded onto a flatbed to the Ford dealer for the xx trip to diagnose the "Anti Theft" system, which they never could resolve. More like Anti-Owner system!! He left it with the dealer "permanently" in the end.

@@LakeNipissing LOL, my relatives had many of the taurus wagons and a few cars. never had severe issues until they were real old. well at least not severe and hard to me working on them. it was usually plain sight obvious issues if electrical, the coating shrunk back from the connector plugs. but then two were lost pretty quick in a row.

What a hacktastic job on that aftermarket garbage. I absolutely despise these aftermarket systems. Cannot tell you how many I had that came in on the hook for a no crank, no start. As soon as I start talking with the customer it's always "Well I just had this or that installed over at X." Junk, take it out and throw it away. As usual, great diag and follow through Ivan. That unit is actually a genuine GM DEALER installed alarm that has probably been in there since it was new. So it actually lasted quite some time.

Yup. Must be garbage though because it only lasted a little over 20 years. Absolutely nothing else on the car would fail in 20 years so it has to be garbage. This trashing third party products like thst is really annoying to me. Some might be garbage but an alarm or remote start system that lasts 15 or 20 years certainly wouldn't be one.

@@kens97sto171 so you are telling me you cannot do simple math and you gave up on reading comprehension altogether? It's a 1995 car, the year is 2020 almost 2021 when he is working on it. That is by my math 25 years at least . I mentioned 15 to 20 years and third party device so you somehow interpret that to mean the GM dealership installed it.... Short answer is no. I do not expect you to believe a dealership installed it. I don't think I even suggested it. However, I do expect you to believe it wasn't installed just last year or anytime recently. But even if it was installed by a dealership or more recently, the technology differences between a 1995 and a car just 10 years later is so different that the device was likely manufactured within or before that 10 year window. I also expect you to understand that in the 15 to 20 years lifetime I suggested, that the idea absolutely no one has ever fiddled with it, cut wire ties or anything else under the dash because the alarm quit working or any other reason (replacing something completely unrelated) is a bit ridiculous.

Many older GM used a resistor key, it's called VATS. The usual culprit is a broken thin gauge white wire in the steering column.

yep, measure the key resistance and install permanent bypass resistors under the dash :) of course it slightly easier to steal (resistance decade box or multi-turn pot bypasses pretty fast also =p

I believe GM only used about 8 different resistance values. So it’s really easy to narrow down to bypass.

Between my transmission R&R on my Silverado, this Polaris ATV with rusted solid CV axles that would NOT come out of the rear diff (had to disassemble the inner joint ON the machine with barely any room), a snowblower that ceased to stop the auger from spinning (and almost smoked the new belt) after a new brake, impeller bearing, and a pair of belts, and this powered parachute trike I've got to engineer a throttle system on for 2 carbs plus an oil injection pump, I'm ready for an epic meltdown!! I need a friggin vacation!! GRRR!!

As soon as you said "aftermarket security system", it was all over.... heh heh heh! In post production, you need to throw in some heavy theme music for those moments... Aftermarket security system! (DUH Dunt Duuuuuuuuuh!) Nice job. No parts required, I know that warmed your heart..... Those were cool cars... I had a Trans Am like that back then. It was fun. For the time, it had nice power. The 5.7 was not a bad motor.... For your general background, a real common security fault back then, you'd put the key in, security light, no crank... Wipe the key off real good with alcohol... Then it would start. Or clean the key off, then put it in & out 50 times or so, clean the key again, then try again, it will start. Those contacts get dirty and change the resistance value. Another quick & dirty one in a lot of Chevy's & Pontiacs of that vintage is, You get the no crank. Jumper the crank relay, it will crank & not start. Usually something in security, either the key, or pretty common to be a bad key switch.... File that away, it could save you some time freezing outside next to the highway....

GMs from that era typically used "true high-current" ignition switches which means the current to the starter actually flows through the ignition switch, which I think is the case here? A good aftermarket alarm/RS installer would have known that and used relays appropriately, but doesn't look like that was done here. That thing was probably put in, in the 90s though, meaning despite the cut-corner install, it was somehow still good enough to work for decades before melting up and causing issues.

the starter solenoid may have been failing and drawing over-current, like coil windings shorting out, not pulling in all the way fast enough from sticking bendix or brushes very worn. that will overcurrent the solenoid feed pretty bad and start to cook things. many times the people don't notice the starter is cranking slow until it quits cranking every try and starts the clicky click key play routine. even I didn't notice on my own, until dead of winter, of course I first checked the battery thinking it was weak. nope brushes gone and by spring it suddenly quit cranking, until I gave it percussive maintenance lol. cleaning, fresh grease and new brushes, good as gold!

I had my buddies amps(7 of them) and my many speakers in a grocery getter looking party wagon mini-van many years ago. nothing ever got stolen, perhaps it was the hillbilly cb antennas? when I got tired of noise and couldn't keep the pile of junk together, he got the stuff back about a year later and put it in his gutless cutlass, it got the trunk popped and stolen within 1 week! perhaps ugly looks and soccer mom vehicle help deter theft LOOL

That's the old school Chevy LT1 V8 engine if it's a V8 model,my Holden Commodore runs the Gen3 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine which actually runs a factory fitted anti theft system which is deactivated by the transponder key so it makes it hard to Hotwire them. The old resistor on the key setup must be very old technology because Holden ran the electronic transponder key setup right from the mid 1990's in Australia even when they still had their own 304 cubic inch Holden V8 engine fitted up until 1999 when the Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine replaced it !

After market crap, oh dear :-( Tell the owner to buy a wheel clamp for use on the driver side front wheel. The bright yellow ones that are very obvious. It stops casual theifs. It also looks like your car was clamped for parking in the wrong place lol.

I think that yellow wiring is upstream from the 3A fuse, and also upstream from some other loads too, as shown at 3:32, and it's those other loads that add up to 8A

I can't even imagine the problems this garbage will cause on the newer vehicles with Can Bus and dozens of modules . On just about ANY vehicle , if the battery is fully charged and the key is in the crank position , you must voltage at the S terminal on the solenoid . On GM , it's been that purple wire for many decades . If not , the problem is elsewhere . Mechanics 101 , first day on the job . Was that purple Camaro owned by Prince ? Great diagnosis and spot on . Do ANY of these Sound and Security shops even calculate amp draw in relation to wire gauge , fuse size and existing components BEFORE they hang this crap in a vehicle ? Pass the butt connectors , we'll be done in 5 minutes . I'll have Scotch Locks , instead !

Omg my friend had a 93 buick century the previous owner removed one of those stupid alarms on, I noticed 2 wires tied together one time we were leaving a restaurant and the car wouldnt start, we were there like 20 min and i remembered went to her side of the car tied them together it started and made it the 60 miles home.

i have the same problem with my 1994 z28 showcar . this happened back in 2017.And the shop had it for 3 months .it costed over $2500.they cracked my dashboard in half .they said it was old.they had to get to a module up in front of the dash they said.I looked this time and don't see anything near what they were talking about. any help?

In Brazil most cars, especially when they get to the second owner, have some sort of this piece of crap aftermarket alarm or security system that cuts the current to the fuel pump or coil pack. It is a peace of mind when I can remove them all.
