My First RODEO? (Fuel Trims & Misfires) - Part 1

Ah a classic Japanese 4x4 from the 90s!
But wait... it's made in the USA...for Izuzu...by Subaru...using GM electronics...and wears a HONDA badge?! CRAZY!!
Anyways, after a recent tune-up and maintenance, this beast isn't running quite right. Let's start digging and see if we can cure all of the issues at once :)

Not really made by Subaru. Made in the Subaru Isuzu Automotive plant in Lafayette Indiana. It was a joint venture. After Isuzu left the country it became just Subaru.

While working at a Honda dealership from 2001-2006 we saw many of these coming in with bad intake manifold gaskets causing misfires and fuel trim issues.

I had a 1995 not the 1995.5 honda passport, it had a issue with overheating going up into the mountains or sitting in traffic. It had a lot less electronics and was a obdI system, man this thing brings back a lot of history for me lol. The even earlier model rodeo's had a bench seat up front, in south America they use them as taxis and hold like 13 people.

I had flashbacks on the oxygen sensors issue, I had a customer's 96 caprice in the shop the customer replaced the engine himself, I found 3 of the o2 sensors connectors crossed it was an honest mistake because there was enough slack in the harness. What made it worse was the factory labels were gone and the wires were very dirty and slightly faded, my approach was to look at a wiring schematic and that it when I discovered the problem. I like the unplug it approach you used, definitely faster! I think that is why GM started using different connectors for upstream and downstream o2 sensors a year or two later so that you could not mix them up. Great video can't wait to see part 2!

I recently purchased a 2001 rodeo for my oldest daughter who's 01 Altima had a blown head gasket, slipping transmission, bad wheel bearing(she purchased without having me check it out).its a super clean rodeo with 30k on a rebuilt engine...i watched the entire vid intently...so far it's a great vehicle.

Had a 97 isuzu rodeo that was bulletproof, put 155k trouble free miles on it, really hard miles. I then traded it for a 2001 isuzu rodeo and put 130k on it, also really hard miles. Wondrous machines. The 4link rear suspension of the 2nd gen rodeos rode so well and extremely easy to upgrade.

If its automatic trans be nice to it. The 4L30e is not really meant for truck based vehicles. Have the trans filters replaced and fluid topped up (about 6 quarts) every 20-30k. Do not have it flushed. Some people think it's a sealed trans, it's not. It just doesnt have a dip stick.

@@Gizmo42Rodeo This is the truth, it's best to treat any transmission this way and service it more often than the manual tells you to, if at all. As a dummy highschooler that absolutely bashed on my 2001 isuzu rodeo, that 4l30e took it and took it very well.

Not a complete loss Ivan, for you must have touched the problem and are pinning it down to some degree. When I pull an igniter (that's what Toyota calls them anyway) I have a really good look at the long shaft that goes down to the plug. Occasionally you will see a tiny black dot where the spark has burned through. Also worth looking at the plug for the telltale carbon pathway on the insulator. I have even ran an inspection camera down the plug bore and found evidence of arcing to ground before.

Intermittent misfires!! Argh! Been tracking one on my son's '08 Ranger, think it's a cracked coil pack; ironically, been watching a couple of Eric O's videos about intermittent misfires that pointed back to a strange ignition coil profile and ultimately carbon tracking from firing outside the cylinder. Great case study, Ivan... ready for part 2!

I recently owned one of these. Sadly though I ended up getting rid of it. It was later discovered the reason why I was having so much trouble. It had a cracked block. I thought it was a blown head gasket. It was easily the best four-wheel drive I've ever owned. Even with a perceived blown head gasket I drove it around for at least a year. I drove from Crescent City California to Santa Cruz, then back up to Crescent City. Then from Crescent City again to Susanville, California. It's overheated plenty of times but it never failed to get me where I needed to go. that thing was like a tank it would just go anywhere I wanted it to go with very little effort. RIP, good Izusu.

It seems to me you would have to try really hard to screw the O2 sensors all up. I'm surprised all the harnesses even reached.

I suspect someone replaced the transmission at some point in the past (those 4L30s are junk and way too weak for an SUV) and probably screwed up the harness when they reinstalled the trans. The engine harness on those is really flimsy and doesn't really have a definite routing like most do.

I've done this in the past, and when it seemed to fix the misfire, suspected repositioning the coil to another cylinder changed its position where it was possibly carbon tracking, but had to let it go at that, rather than throw a coil at it, not being a definitive diagnosis. On the house until it MIGHT come back for further testing.

Don't ya just love when you can't recreate the issue? That's THE most aggravating thing in the world for me! Nice find on the o2 harness cross-up! Boy did they get that thing mixed up every which way! 3 out of 4 - great odds, lol! Wonder if they had the transmission out of that, and that's just where the harness ended up afterwards. Anything is possible on a used, older vehicle. Could have been this way the past 15 years! I'll be watching for part 2. Interesting one! Haven't seen a Passport in years. Honda also made a Passport motorcycle / scooter / moped waaaaay back in the day. When the automotive one first came out, and someone in town said they owned one, I thought they had bought a scooter - thought that was strange, LOL!! 🤣

Don't be discouraged, the 3.5 is finniky at least my 01 was, check the service bulletins if you haven't already, some ignition items are OEM only, chasing random misfires is a rabbit hole you don't want to dive into

To be certain the O2 sensors are positioned correctly check a wiring diagram of the ECM and match the wire colors for each position the the corresponding sensor. I agree with the fuel injector hypothesis. I had an oldsmobile that presented similar symptoms. The fuel injector was the problem.

OK, sure why not, I'll take a stab @ it, could be several things of course, but for sure, 2 - things are happening, did you shine the flashlight in each spark plug hole make sure you don't have any "OIL INTRUSION" , make sure your COIL is not shorting to ground, INSPECT for damage @ the pigtail connection to the COIL, A BAD COIL or COILS, BAD FUEL INJECTOR, or Clogged, Bad GAS, it has been sitting for a while? ¿ 🤔... okay, that should be enough for now I'm getting tired and sleepy good night!! & I will wait for part # 2....

I BET it's injector related problem. 16:00 It can be seen when REVING the engine on the diagnostic data.The Bank 2 Sensor 2 goes LEAN due to lack of fuel. In the same time - short term fuel trim bank 2 goes 15% rich.The B2S2 is LEAN because the CAT saved more Oxygen , due to not enough hydrocarbon to oxidize ,due to plugged injector or non firing injector.

I am hoping it wasn't a loose coil connector, but since you felt a mild misfire with hard acceleration I think it will act up again! My initial thoughts were since it was running lean initially it must be an injector not firing as I would suspect a coil not firing the trims would have been rich, but it sounds like the fuel trims are normal since fixing the O2 sensor connector locations?

Dan'sMeTube someone likely swapped engines. Didn't put the Harness back on correctly. I've seen some really poor work done on vehicles in 35 years of mechanic business.

The coil boot on #2 was wet with oil. That can cause a spark to ground vs. the spark plug. Maybe a good idea to clean out the spark plug wells with a cloth rag and final clean up with a cloth rag and brake clean. Might not be the wiring interface, just the oil presence. Do coil to ground vs spark plug pulses show up different on scanners?

As per oscillations in the oxygen sensors I think you still have O2S12 swapped with O2S21

I think bank 2 was running so rich that it fouled out that upstream O2 causing a sluggish response. Should clear up with more driving :)

Fuel trims in freeze frame don't indicate a fueling issue, I bet it's ignition, likely tracking down the side of the spark plug, thus when you swapped coils, it will be fine for a while

This could mean nothing, but the mounting flange on cylinder 4 coil seemed to have a lot more rust than that of cylinder 2 coil. Just a stupid observation. Is that an older coil?

Im a dyi and im stuck , whit a 98 nissan frontier 2.4 l, P0304, i cant find the problem, alredy swap spark plugs, wires, fuel presure is good , swap injectors, i conect a oscilloscope and find mising on the 1°, the 180°, looks fine, so put a new distributor and works better less misfires, and more signal on the 1°, so what you think my next step??? Compresion is good too, im thinking to check the timing chain? One thing that im confused on the scanner i see some data like the btdc is at 47 to 55, ?? Im learning and im sorry for my writing, and thank you for the good information and the time you take to post your videos

You might have a vacuum leak close to the #4 port of the intake manifold. But if a new distributor made it better, still sounds like a spark issue :)

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics i found 2 more issues, the exhaust manifold has a little crack close to the #4 port, and also has some carbon build on the intake manifold at the #3, so i remove all the , the caps on the top and on the side at the intake manifold and put air whit the compressor, blow all the black stuff, trucks is running perfect, no more flashing missfire, another thing , i have a solus edge scanner, and the data wasnt correct, so i has to use the verus whit the nissan conector, example, solus edge was the maf sensor .001 reading ??, on the verus whit the nissan conector was at 1.75 , i hope someone will use this info info, thanks!!

All I can tell you is, if this uses the GM V6 like the Rodeo did, stay far, far away from the #5 coil. It's special. It's different! As in, different part number. Never really understood why, I just know it whooped a whole class of us back in school. :D

They use Isuzu 3.2. But on some it #6 that has a short boot so no swapping with it.

Good thing it has a Isuzu motor cause toward the end of Rodeo/Passport production they used a GM V6 which a large percentage failed right on the assembly line in Lafayette, IN! Isuzu was owned by GM when Subaru had the joint venture at SIA Subaru Isuzu Automotive

The only gm motors were the 2.8 in early ones then whatever was used in the rebadged gms after 2004. The 2.4, 2.6, 3.2, and 3.5 were all Isuzu. The 2.2 was a Deawoo.

I looked at Rockauto 1997 Honda Passport. -- One part number of O2 sensor fits all four spots, and the price is reasonable at around $25 for Bosch or NTK.

You guessed it, Ivan! When SUVs were becoming so popular in the 80s, Honda was caught without one, so while they developed their own SUV, they 'borrowed' the Isuzu Rodeo and rebadged it.

Sounds like the car has a serpentine belt issue on start up. I have the same issue with my 2012 Civic. I need to replace my Belt Tensioner because I can see alot of play on the belt.

Several options. Low-tech would be unplugging/lifting coils to see if the rpm changes.

Interesting on my older Toyota the down stream 02 has only 2 wires and the upstream has 4 wires guessing the upstream is heated and the one after the cat is not heated in my case impossible to mix-up. Weird that they made the connectors that would allow you to mix-up the sensors

I've seen Toyotas with a 2-wire upstream and a 4-wire downstream! Are you sure that yours aren't backwards? Downstream sensor is in a much cooler spot, so it needs the heater to stay toasty :)

Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics I have 2 1989 Toyota van wagons the upstream is 4 wire and down stream sensor is 2 wire what is unusual to find is something pre ODB2 that has a downstream sensor I have to use a jumper wire to get codes the way old school way

Be careful swapping coils on Isuzu 3.2/3.5 engines. #6 coil on some have a shorter boot than the rest and cannot be swapped with them. The only way I see mixing up o2 wires that bad is if the trans was out.

Check the back of the head. There is a cam plug that leaks . Enough to cause an issue with an air leak I'm not sure.

Bad injector or harness. Could be a bad plug also. Waiting on the notification for part 2.

I'm having some kind of problem like that, maybe someone can help.. it's a 99 F-150 4.6 acts like 2 dead cylinders turned it off immediately restart and runs great new plugs ,coils, injectors , O2 sensors and cleaned maf ... it's got me stumped.

looked to me that the catalytic converters were not working, should be a straight line after the cats. I think.

When someone tells you they changed a lot of stuff and then things are not running right, the first thing to do is visually check they changed everything correctly.

What does open/closed loop mean

Closed loop means the engine computer uses the O2 sensor signal to fine-tune fuel delivery. Open loop means default strategy just based on sensors like MAF, MAP, TPS, ECT :)
