This 2013 Jeep Wrangler barely runs...only 111k miles on the odometer.
Doesn't take long to determine that it has engine mechanical problems.
Luckily, this issue is covered by a Jeep Extended Engine Warranty!!
OR IS IT??

I’ve seen a lot of this over the last several years and people should be outraged. There is absolutely no reason for them to be denying warranties when it’s the same exact cylinder head that’s being warrantied in other vehicles. They need to get together on a forum and file a class action lawsuit against these crooked manufacturers like Chrysler.

It's not Jeep. It's the company that took it over. At times when companies took over. Customers have lost. If the Jeep is not covered under warranties or extended warranties. That's it. Ivan tried already. Again it's not covered. But the other Jeep dealer didn't cover the warranty. They diagnosis the truck further and found the problem. They couldn't figure out what was wrong with one with about 25,000 miles. They had it back 6 times since I bought it new. Finally I went down to the dealership and read the service manual. After a couple hours I talked to the service manager. I found a bad connection on the tps. He replaced it and I get a letter from Chrysler that said that vehicle is now out of warranty. All repairs will be my responsibility. Never ever will I ever buy one again, ever.

From an old mechanic to a young one - if you have a obvious low cylinder on cranking, if at all possible pop the valve cover and check for bent/stuck valve, a bent pushrod, a loose rocker arm or a broken spring as long as it doesn't take forever to get it off. Yes it is fine to diagnose it using the computer or other diagnostic tools, but you still need to check the physical parts to identify the real source of the problem. It is too easy to jump to the conclusion that it has a bad head or a blown head gasket and write it off, costing your customer thousands.

Well the key thing here is Ivan already verified low compression on one cylinder. That means something is not sealing properly or its out of the correct timing (more likely with adjacent or more than one cylinder misfiring). Working on plenty of these pentastar engines, I can tell you I always see issues with cylinder heads, lifters, roller followers, camshafts and timing components. Half the time the ignition coils on these are suspect. But in this particular case, Removing the plenum to remove the left valve cover just to find out there might not be anything physically broken on that side would put Ivan 1hr into the labor part of the job and would be inconclusive. A leaking valve (most probable cause) is not something you can see really unless you remove the head. Typical diag is 1hr unless authorized for more. Ivan already checked and confirmed cylinder leakage was present with other tools. He diagnosed this the same way any high level Mopar technician would. Quick, accurate, and efficient using modern diagnostic equipment.

Jeep had a great engine known as the 4.0L inline six. Chrysler probably decided to stop using it because American Motors designed it, and it was too reliable, albeit fuel thirsty. Chrysler usually has the habit of messing things up. Discontinuation of this legendary engine was one of their biggest failures, in my opinion.

Customer got lucky only needing a spring. Most of the time , it ends up being exhaust valve not seating on bank 2. Bank 1 valves are also a problem as well along with the cam lobes rounding out due to bad roller followers on both banks. Had 2017 Charger with a fish bite misfire that barely could be felt on cylinder 5. Used in-cylinder pressure transducer and found uneven compression peaks while cranking to find it. Valve was seating intermittently. Great case study Ivan !

I was a gm/hyundai tech over a decade ago. I was watching this same thing happen with jeep corporation as well as others. I've had so many jeep fans and die hard's rant and rave and brag up a storm about jeep products. I could never really agree with them. Nor would I argue with them (cause what's the point with hard head's..), Nor would I ever EVER own a new vehicle now days. 2000 and later models for me. No warranty to worry about, fix it myself. Have a broken part, replace, break out the welder, 3D print something, fabricate, ducktape, rig up a part from another vehicle, OR throw it away and get another one. I live in a town that is small and every road around here is 25-30mph. It takes ten minutes to get from one end of town to the other with the two lights green. Therefor I do not need some fancy mobile to cruise in luxury. I just need something that has a motor, enclosed, and gets me where I'm going a little faster than walking. Traveling down a highway at 70 average mph, you'd probably want something a little more sturdy, reliable, and cozy. So my advise to those out there not liking how these manufactures, dealers, etc., operate. Stop buying the shitty products they push out there. Let their bottom lines and pockets dry up. Only then will they even begin, to think about being more honorable. Make decisions of home and job accordingly so that you don't become desperate enough to put yourself in these positions where they have you bent over coals. Trust me it is WAY more freeing to know that your vehicle is paid for and you can do whatever you little heart desire with it and to it. I used to own a fancy sports car a long time ago in a big city. I'd park way far away where no one would likely park next to me. I would call in on snow days so I wouldn't chance others crashing into me. Sure we got insurance and warranties etc., but I hardly had time as it was to have to now deal with scheduling repairs, courts, phone calls with dealer and insurances etc. etc.. Now I park where ever I want. Someone hits me, eh. Car stops working, I fix it. Car stops working and is unfixable, I scrap it and move on to another one. No having to go through other's "approvals" of what to do with my stuff that I worked very hard mentally and physically to earn. Short story long... You get what you pay for! It's possible to polish a turd(mythbusters), but ya know what happens when you took a look inside? It's still a turd. I have a car right now that leaks like a sieve. I look at the positives. Just keep adding fresh oil and ya never have to change the oil lol.

But buying a car is like gambling a little bit. You might as well roll the dice in your favor if possible. I'm driving around in a 13-year-old Toyota Prius with 394,000 mi on it. Still rolling on the original hybrid battery, still has all the original suspension components except for the struts themselves one of the shocks was leaking so I replaced them. Engine doesn't leak a drop of oil, it does burn a little bit but not enough to be seriously concerned about. And surprisingly it's actually a pretty easy car to work on. Parts are readily available and not that expensive if you're willing to wrench on the car yourself. I drive for a living so for me the car is only a tool for the job. I don't drive it because I'm some eco warrior. I drive it because the car costs me $0.08 per mile to operate.

I had a similar experience with a Toyota Tacoma. Recall was for a spiral cable (clock spring) in the steering wheel. My year and VIN were both within the range of the recall but yet my vehicle did NOT qualify. I pressed Toyota for an answer because the situation didn't sit well with me. And after a bunch of back and forth, their answer was that "the year and VIN range in the recall are vehicles that COULD be affected. Using your full VIN, we determined that your vehicle is not affected." How could this be? My thought (no proof) is that they may have had more than one supplier of the part and only one was affected. Is it possible? I suppose. It's the only thought that makes sense because Toyota has been known to use parts from more than one manufacturer. Case in point - my truck, and many other V6 Toyotas, will come from the factory with 3 Denso and 3 NGK spark plugs. No lie.

@@walterk1221 This time is was a spring and I don't know enough about the design of these engines to know if the spring failure was just another symptom of the same bad design Also a simple google search shows people having left cylinder head problems on the penstar well before 100k and being told "those parts were made right" and those aren't covered by the extended warranty. My point is do you honestly trust the company to make the right call with regards to which specific parts are problematic. I have a recent example. I worked on a 2019 ford ecoboost with a failed purge valve, just out of warranty. Every year prior had a recall on that part. Ford says the 2019s were not covered. I have compared the parts and they are identical minus a quick disconnect being swapped to a more-expensive-to-replace heat shrinked plastic line. Do I trust that Ford retooled and redesigned the part and this was just a freak accident. Hell no.

GM did this as well from a personal experience. My mom's 2009 Malibu kept having the electronic power steering stop working intermittently while driving, which would make the wheel very hard to turn. I did some research and found where there was a recall for this very problem, however I called three different GM dealerships and they all said they would not cover it under that recall because the car was built at a different plant than the recalled ones. I asked if it had the same part, and their answer was yes but even though it was has the exact same part and part number because it was built at a different location they could not honor the recall. How's that for a crock of crap?

Honestly, after having a Journey with a 3.6L I went forward and did the repairs and recalls all myself , like the oil filter cooler, I honestly would not trust having any of the parts changers at the dealerships touch anything more internal than that. I had gotten into discussions about a Challenger that was there for a wrist pin (yup, 3.6L) that decided to take a crap and busted through a piston. After that discussion it confirmed my thoughts . That Pentastar engine is a great design and powerful but the materials they used were all geared to being a throw away unit.

I just had a Jeep in my shop this week with low compression on cyl's 2 and 4, broken upper and lower intake manifold, broken ground wire for the B2S1 02 sensor and a failing post recall fuel pump relay. It was a 2011 Grand Cherokee with the 3.6 Liter V6. There was simply too much damage to repair. No one seems to be able to get a head in a reasonable amount of time, so wound up having to replace the entire engine with a good, used one and then chase down all the remaining problems. Turned out to be quite the project. I don't blame you from shying away from wanting to rebuild one of those cylinder heads Ivan. They can be a nightmare. We own a 2007 Wrangler with 190,000 miles on it. Have had it since 2011 and have to say, other than basic repairs, it has been very good to us. Must admit, did have to have repairs done for a fork and flywheel problem. Was not into DIY repairs, so didn't pay too close attention, other than the cost, $1500. Obviously, with a 15 year auto one has to expect some repairs. Now, being retired. I've begun to learn automotive repairs. Have changed a water pump and radiator, a bad coil assembly, plugs and wires. Being well over the expected life span of a 3.8L V6, I've been vigilant when it comes to oil changes and keeping an eye out for any sign of trouble. Fingers crossed. I did recently go to the dealer for bolts for the hood cowling and a small can of touch-up paint. $50 and a cluster fuck of a time getting it to me has me not wanting to deal with 'Jeep' at all. Hace to say, all in all, it has been a great vehicle to own. But, now that Fiat owns it, I'm hearing lots of stories about shotty quality control and build quality. We're gonna keep this one, forever, and try to find a small, convertible roadster to keep it company, in the garage

1 minute into the video hearing it crank I would say it has a misfire on 2, 4 or 6. Bad cylinder head. Extended warranty is 10 years or 150k miles I believe Edit:I was right! The thing is the bad cylinder heads were put on all 11s and 12s, but only some 13s. That’s why some 13s aren’t covered. That doesn’t mean it can’t fail though. I worked at the dealer and did many of the loose pinion nut recalls on Rams, but I came across many loose pinion nuts on trucks that were not part of the recall. I’ve seen a couple broken valve springs on 3.6s too. The worst was a GC with 30k and the valve dropped and caused the worst engine damage I’ve ever seen. There was so much damage it took me a while to figure out the cause was a broken valve spring.

A warranty recall affects a limited number of vehicles that for example, got a bad batch of left cylinder heads installed on a certain range of vehicles built from VIN x through VIN y. That doesn’t mean ALL 2013 models got that head and were subject to that recall. Apparently this example wasn’t, and that just a valve spring replacement fixed it, shows this.

I have a Jeep liberty and I found out that if you do get aftermarket parts they either don’t work long-term or don’t work at all

@@mrsfgogo09 Shaun, I almost bought a Liberty because I really liked that vehicle and still do. However, my 97 Dodge Dakota keeps running at 290,000 miles. It just seems to me that for $350 dollars plus 3 hours Labor pushing $700 to $800 I'd try something different. Coincidentally, there are a lot great alternatives mentioned below which makes very good reading. On a side note, just last week I stopped in the local grocery store to pick up some Super Bowl food. The fellow parked next to me came out of the store, climbed into his Jeep, turned the key and nothing! He got on his phone to his Wife, I assume to come get him. So I asked if he wanted me to help him look at it? Sure. So he popped the hood and I was horrified at all the plastic. Fortunately, he removed some of it for me and we FOUND the battery. I stared a moment, then started wiggling the battery cables. Sure enough the positive was loose. I wiggled while he cranked and fine Jeep fired up. He offered me a beer for helping him which still makes me chuckle just to thing about it. Shaun, I hope your Liberty runs forever. But you have to admit, navigating this repair business can be really tricky. Appreciate you comment.

Didn't you notice the oil leaking from where it was there prior? Did you crack the oil filter housing by accident when changing the oil?

Wow, Ivan, that's bad for jeep!! You're right, they definitely cheaped out on good quality stuff, glad i don't drive jeep anymore!!! That's the reason why! It's like every time you touch it, something goes wrong lol. Great video!! 👍 glad the client keeps coming back to you to verify things! Did you do the oil filter housing repair? I wonder?

Seems this issue would not have been covered by warranty since it was a broken valve spring, not a faulty valve seal. Had it gone in for a warranty repair as soon as the broken valve spring was discovered the owner would have been back on the hook for the bill.

If you read the warranty all they do is a leak down test and replace the head... That's it!

Thanks for the info of the classic Chrysler oil leak, filter housing. Shopping for a new van and checked a Chrysler minivan today. Didn't take it. All the bolts and nuts, in the engine compartment where badly rusted. Not sure if that's a Chrysler thing or not. But I'll check for this filter housing too.

Really weird that the dealer didn't change the oil and filter. They almost had to know there was gas in the oil. Were they aware of the crack?

Most dealerships no longer have mechanics anymore, they are supposed trained technicians ,all they do is plug it in to see if there are any codes that appear , when there are none they claim they can't do anything about the problem

Seeing the TIPM in the opening scene... I see why no one wanted to dig into it, and yeah that cadence was really noticeable. Sounded like a 4cyl. with a dead hole. Curious why no one did a leak down test on Cylinder 2. and or going in with a bore scope. I would imaging an in-cylinder pressure waveform would have shown an intermittent valve function... Plug those pressure sensors!

Neighbor had a 97 Cherokee helped him do bearings in it several years back. Had it out by lunch and running by dinner. Super easy to work on and reliable vehicle. After about the mid 2000's they really went down the tube. Super sad.

Glad that they finally went to Ivan to get it checked out how can the outher shops not know the serious compression issues I no very little about mechanics but that noise tells me it's low on compression and how does a Rubicon affect the engine when they all use the same motor if that happened to my Jeep if I owned one I'm telling you I wouldn't buy another one again

Very nice. Yeah If Vin isn't listed then it's not an affected model ,they are usually accurate when it comes to that. I've come across a 2011 Cherokee with broken valve spring, only the misfire would also make a knocking noise from the timing chain. Was able to repair without removing head.
