@المهاجر التونسي judging the pros and cons between RISC-V and Intel without choosing whether you use either processing for mobile or sever or desktop isn't very helpful. The RISC-V architecture changes the strategic options in it's an open standard unlike Intel's proprietary processor standard ISC. This puts a much different spin on the more fundamental issue of how to cheaply produce processor architectures.

As for me, the concept behind of this phone is the future. Instead of owning tons different devices and synchronize them using the Cloud, you carry just one device and transform it in a form factor suitable for you now, like a phone, a tablet, or a desktop. And you do not need to create an excessive traffic to synchronize your data. Tons of benefits.

Another feature that people tend to forget is that phones where the back comes off and the battery comes out tend to be much better at handling being dropped, because the kinetic energy can be transferred away from the phone through the dreaded flinging of the back and the battery. Phones that glue all that stuff in have had to use stronger and stronger screens and still break quite easily (partly because they use the stronger glass as an excuse to make the screen thinner instead of more durable, but still) in many cases. I expect the PinePhone to handle drops without a protective case better than most of its contemporaries.

Linux phones now a days feel like a brand new experiment in the 50's. We need at least 5 more years of dedicated developers (or a corporate) behind them to be ready to hit the market and replace android and iOS. I'd love to have one, but they're nowhere near ready.

I'd argue these first steps are the most important. Convenience will always win, sure, but a dedicated phone for hardcore linux users is the first step to take. Decent hardware and plenty of software updates could give a serious edge on these sorts of projects, as niche as they are. It's wonderful to see this finally happening

This phone isn't trying to compete with mainstream phones. It's for Linux users who want to carry over their Linux experience to a phone that they have control and privacy with. TL, the owner of Pine Microsystems has said that there wont be a new Pinephone released for three to five years, in order to ensure the software in this generation is well optimized, and to give time to select a new SOC that is the best balance of features and function.

@@ReloadedK @IzaicNix @EpicJonah but why not, though? I DO want a linux phone that competes in the market because I'm sick and tired of android and iOS and the bullshit they come with. Thanks for the video! I'm even more excited for the Librem 5 now. My phone contract was up and I almost considered getting the Pine Phone while I'm waiting for my Librem, but I got an el cheapo Android instead. It sounds like I made the right move, since the Pine Phone is not quite ready either. I'm happy that ssh works!

the purpose of the Pine is to be 100% open source based (thus safe/transparent); it turns out to be maybe 85% opensource because there are some hardware modules (radios i.e.) that have proprietary closed blobs; you can use many mainstream phones running Android or iOS if you root/jailbreak them and install "computer apps", tools and services (terminal, ssh server, web server, vnc, etc) but the major problem with them is the data mining/tracking by those corps

I can use a privacy phone that fits my needs office documents, images, presentations, spreadsheets, phone calls and messaging. What about social media, honestly I would rather use it in browser instead of webapps except Signal or Telegram which is better, the problem is telegram is banned in my country because of the Riot in Bahrain happened couple of years ago I think but it still felt it is recent, but that's ok! I can GnuPG for encryption which includes PinePhone, Librem, and Fairphone as well (not Spyphone like the rest *cough*) terminal for development most importantly for me! And as my personal Personal Digital Assistant (Hello MyCroft! My good companion, sorry and goodbye Google Deepminds, Siri, Alexa and Cortana no hard feelings, oh wait a minute feelings are not implemented just yet, physically to be more specific lol) and all in one Utility out of the box to solve any problems in my way, and as an IT person nothing can stop this thing! Remember we need more Free Software not more Distros!

@@kuhluhOG Not true, Calling and SMS do work in Plasma Mobile on PostmarketOS and KDE Neon. Infact, it's the more mature options such as Sailfish or Ubuntu Touch with Unity 8 that can't do calling yet. There definitely are a couple bugs, but it does work. Plasma Mobile was also just updated to Plasma Mobile 5.18, which is considered the 1.0 milestone for the Plasma Mobile (AKA: Instead of Plasma Mobile 1.0, it's Plasma Mobile 5.18 which is inline with Plasma Desktop) (Plasma Desktop and Plasma Mobile are pretty much the same thing minus the shell, as they use 90% of the same code and libraries) Manjaro Alpha 3 is using 5.17.5 still. Also, keep in mind the operating system images change daily, so you have to test the latest images each time.

Yup, it was. You can buy a Nexus 5 or Oneplus One and flash it with UBT as many have done, and it not only is still supported by the community, but you can still hook it up to a external monitor. It's pretty cool, but unfortunately those android devices can't run a mainline Linux kernel like the Pinephone, and UBT merely uses libhybris on top of the android kernel for those devices.

It's funny. I remember talking to a software engineer mate of mine, roughly 10 years ago, about a vision I had of the future workplace. I clearly can't help myself from the following mini-rant. I said I reckon we'll have phones as our new desktop computers and the office of the future will only need to supply you a monitor, keyboard, and mouse--connecting via USB/HDMI/VGA adaptor or hub, and a Bluetooth headset for calls. You'll be completely mobile and since you keep the phone/computer when you leave the office, you can work at multiple sites with ease--considering everything you need is in your pocket. He said there's no way you'll be able to get video through a HDMI/VGA hub or connector and that it would struggle with all of those USB connections and Bluetooth. Not to mention storage size, etc. I responded by asking him to look at where mobile phone tech had gotten by then (roughly 2010) and to consider where we could be in the future. Well here we are in 2020 and how can we _not_ see this as a viable office of the future? /rant
