As for me, the concept behind of this phone is the future. Instead of owning tons different devices and synchronize them using the Cloud, you carry just one device and transform it in a form factor suitable for you now, like a phone, a tablet, or a desktop. Another feature that people tend to forget is that phones where the back comes off and the battery comes out tend to be much better at handling being dropped, because the kinetic energy can be transferred away from the phone through the dreaded flinging of the back and the battery. Phones that glue all that stuff in have had to use stronger and stronger screens and still break quite easily (partly because they use the stronger glass as an excuse to make the screen thinner instead of more durable, but still) in many cases. I expect the PinePhone to handle drops without a protective case better than most of its contemporaries.

Linux phones now a days feel like a brand new experiment in the 50's. We need at least 5 more years of dedicated developers (or a corporate) behind them to be ready to hit the market and replace android and iOS. I'd love to have one, but they're nowhere near ready.

I'd argue these first steps are the most important. Convenience will always win, sure, but a dedicated phone for hardcore linux users is the first step to take. This phone isn't trying to compete with mainstream phones. It's for Linux users who want to carry over their Linux experience to a phone that they have control and privacy with. TL, the owner of Pine Microsystems has said that there wont be a new Pinephone released for three to five years, in order to ensure the software in this generation is well optimized, and to give time to select a new SOC that is the best balance of features and function.

I've subscribed to your channel because I liked your style of presentation, discussing, warts and all, on what is an interesting project. Great sound quality. Glad it wasn't an unboxing, one distro after another etc, as all that sort of stuff is painful to walk though. Your decision to skip all that was spot on. I'd like to see how you get on in this project, and that is what you presented in the video.

Man I can't wait to have a full Linux computer in my pocket to carry around. Hook it up to a monitor, maybe bring a portable keyboard with you. this is such a glorious future ahead if we can make this work

I like your vision of the future. Have you looked into using Lineage OS, the open source Android alternative? That's the direction I'm leaning toward. The true test of these open source phones is going to be how well they work as phones. Otherwise, it's just a cool little tablet.

Wow, I'm glad I can do online banking on the PC since I heard about the limitations US people still have today. I never used apps and they only came out a few years ago anyway. Before that online banking was in a web browser only.

Do you realize that Android is also a Linux karnel based OS and you can run most linux commands if you set up the right environments?
@destrierofdark_4 жыл бұрын
Except: no, you can't. It's an µClinux base, or at least was a while back, and you'd be hard pressed to find all standard commands, nevermind in a standard, non-Busybox package, or god forbid only a Busybox that isn't neutered to all fucking hell with only maybe five useless commands.

I honestly wait for the consumer versions to be released. Along with the Debian version you showed at the end, it should be a nice companion. Especially once the Dock feature works fluent.

I should have gone deeper in this video as you can technically make calls depending on your carrier, but I didn't want to show it working on video just to have people disappointed it doesn't work for them. Give it a month or so for the rest of the carriers to be implemented before attempting this.

This gets me so damn excited! I'm not a complete Linux guru like yourself but have 7 years of experience fixing problems I've had using mainly Linux Mint but have the 3 last years been using Bunsenlabs Linux more and more and they have done a really great job on the latest version called Lithium in my opinion. I also just want to ask you to try out Bunsenlabs Linux because I want to hear your opinion about it. Because I couldn't find any video from you mentioning Bunsenlabs. Thanks for a excellent chanel. 🤘

@@kuhluhOG Not true, Calling and SMS do work in Plasma Mobile on PostmarketOS and KDE Neon. Infact, it's the more mature options such as Sailfish or Ubuntu Touch with Unity 8 that can't do calling yet. There definitely are a couple bugs, but it does work. Plasma Mobile was also just updated to Plasma Mobile 5.18, which is considered the 1.0 milestone for the Plasma Mobile (AKA: Instead of Plasma Mobile 1.0, it's Plasma Mobile 5.18 which is inline with Plasma Desktop) (Plasma Desktop and Plasma Mobile are pretty much the same thing minus the shell, as they use 90% of the same code and libraries) Manjaro Alpha 3 is using 5.17.5 still. Also, keep in mind the operating system images change daily, so you have to test the latest images each time.

This is really good to know. So glad to see it. thank you. Been using a Samsung S8+ Galaxy 3rd year. Purchased this originally for this very purpose it has the Dex docking station. Had to get new battery and screen but it has lasted fine and still good going into 4th year of use soon but need to look into an alternative. Being able to use it as a computer is definitely a plus. Wouldn't like to have to do without it but rather have a linux based phone for sure.

Not at this time. The big thing is the app integration and making it mobile. Yes, I can check my email on it through the browser, but I want really clean integration and that isn't there yet.

Back to waiting, I guess... I tried Ubuntu on a phone some years back when rooting them wasn't such a pain, but the OS was not functional then either. I just wish it was possible to leave the Snapple/Google trap already.

Excellent! I like the idea of a linux phone 1) as a means for being able to stay away from proprietary options and 2) with docking, a PC! I think Ubuntu was playing with a phone docking-to-PC option years ago but their phone didn't make it.
@izaicslinux69614 жыл бұрын
Yup, it was. You can buy a Nexus 5 or Oneplus One and flash it with UBT as many have done, and it not only is still supported by the community, but you can still hook it up to a external monitor. It's pretty cool, but unfortunately those android devices can't run a mainline Linux kernel like the Pinephone, and UBT merely uses libhybris on top of the android kernel for those devices.

Already done. Drew Devault is creating a Sway touch shell for the Pinephone. Also you can just run I3WM in PMOS and use it as a mini computer as people have already done (though i personally think it's a terrible experience).

It's funny. I remember talking to a software engineer mate of mine, roughly 10 years ago, about a vision I had of the future workplace. I clearly can't help myself from the following mini-rant. I said I reckon we'll have phones as our new desktop computers and the office of the future will only need to supply you a monitor, keyboard, and mouse--connecting via USB/HDMI/VGA adaptor or hub, and a Bluetooth headset for calls. You'll be completely mobile and since you keep the phone/computer when you leave the office, you can work at multiple sites with ease--considering everything you need is in your pocket. He said there's no way you'll be able to get video through a HDMI/VGA hub or connector and that it would struggle with all of those USB connections and Bluetooth. Not to mention storage size, etc. I responded by asking him to look at where mobile phone tech had gotten by then (roughly 2010) and to consider where we could be in the future. Well here we are in 2020 and how can we _not_ see this as a viable office of the future? /rant
